  • A few fluid structure interaction analyses have been developed for turbomachinery blades in comparison with aircraft wings. Also, the existing aeroelastic analyses for turbomachinery blades have been mostly limited to cases with a steady freestream. In reality, however, the inflowing freestream is often pulsating. Therefore, this paper presents stability and forced response analyses of an isolated three-dimensional blade under pulsating freestream conditions. A new three-dimensional unsteady vortex lattice model under a pulsating freestream has been developed in discrete time domain to examine unsteady aerodynamic forces acting on a vibrating blade. The blade's structural behaviors have been analyzed by using a three-dimensional plate model. In the aeroelastic analysis, the flutter onset of a blade under pulsating freestream is predicted by the Floquet analysis. The new time domain method can predict aeroelastic stability as well as time history.

  • Incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $\varepsilon{-SST}$ turbulence model are adopted for the investigation of the flow fields between the square cylinder and the ground. When the grounds moves, the diminish of the shear layer intensity on the ground promotes the interaction between the lower and the upper separated shear layer of the cylinder. Hence vortex shedding occurs at the lower gap height than stationary ground. In the moving ground, the secondary shedding frequency disappears due to the absence of the separation bubble on the ground which exists in the stationary ground. In addition, the shedding frequency and aerodynamic coefficients in the moving ground become higher than those of the stationary ground.

  • The BVI(blade vortex interaction) noise Prediction has been one of the most challenging acoustic analyses in helicopter aeromechanical Phenomenon. It is well known high resolution airloads data with accurate tip vortex positions are necessary for the accurate prediction of this phenomenon. The truly unsteady time-marching free-wake method, which is able to capture the tip vortices instability in hover and axial flights, is expanded with the rotor flapping motion and trim routine to predict unsteady airloads in forward and descent flights. And Farassat formulation 1-A based on the FW-H equation is applied for the noise prediction considering the blade flapping motion. Main objective of this study is to validate the newly developed prediction code. To achieve the objective, the descent flight condition of AH-1 OLS(operational loads survey) configuration is analyzed using present code. The predicted sectional thrust distribution and sectional airloads time histories show the present scheme is able to capture well the unsteady airloads caused by a parallel BVI. Finally, the predicted noise data, observed in two different positions where are 3.44 times of rotor radius far from the hub center, are quite reasonable agreements with the experimental data compared to the other analysis results.

  • In cavity flow, the rectangular step generates so strong sound that many researchers have investigated method to suppress the nois during interaction between vortical flow and rectangular forward step. In this study the flow noise from the vortex motion in two-dimentional low Mach number flow past a forward step with various chamfering angle is calculated numerically. Inviscid incompressible discrete vortex model and matched asymptotic expansion(MAE) theory are applied to obtain the inner flow field and the outer noise field. Both source acoustic pressure and sound intensity are obtained with various chamfering height, chamfering angle and initial vortex position. The pressure amplitude is most suppressed when the chamfering angle is between $15^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circC}$ at the chamfering length of 30% of the step height.

  • To develop more robust oil boom which is vulnerable to various failure mode under severe weather condition, highly accurate wave model is developed using Spatially filtered Navier-Stokes Eq., LDS (Lagrangian Dynamic Smagorinsky model) for residual stresses, SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics). To clarify the hydraulic characteristics of floating type oil boom, we numerically simulate the behavior of oil spill around oil boom under very energetic progressive waves. At the first stage, we firmly anchored the oil boom, and then, allowed the excursion of the oil boom. It turns out that oil boom with skirt of enough length (longer than 30% of depth) effectively confines the oil spill even against very energetic waves. We can also observe obliquely descending vertical eddies between y = 1~2 m as horizontal vortices shedding at the interface of oil spill and water are diffused toward the bottom, which is believed to be the birth, growing and break-down of Kelvin-Helmholz wave.

  • The fluid-structure interaction of a towed body is simulated using a developed code, which is based on the flux-difference splitting scheme on the hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method. To improve the stability in the coupling between the fluid and structure domains, a scheme is used, in which the effects of structure deformation are treated implicitly. The developed code is validated for the fluid-structure interaction problem through comparisons with other results on the vortex-induced vibration of elastically mounted cylinders. To simulate behavior of a towed body, an asymmetric tension modelling for a towing cable is suggested. In the suggested model, the tension is proportional to the elongation of the cable, but the cable has no effect on the body motion whenever the distance between the endpoints of the cable is smaller than the original length of the cable. The fluid-structure interactions of a towed body are simulated on the basis of different parameters of the towing cables. It is observed that the suggested tension model predicts the snapping for a shorter towing cable, which is in accordance with the reported results.

  • In this study, laboratory experiments are conducted to investigate flow-fields around floating breakwaters by using the LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) system. The LDV system is a well-known equipment to measure fluid particle velocities in laboratory experiments. Although the system requires great efforts and enormous time for measurements, it can provide precise velocity fields comparing to other available equipments. Various types of drafts and shapes for breakwaters are employed in laboratory experiments to analyze a relation between flow-fields and vorticity. A series of numerical experiments are also carried out by using a two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations model. Numerically predicted results are compared with laboratory measurements.

  • Modifying effects of the rectangular forward step for suppressing the unsteady pressure fluctuation during interaction between the upstream vortical flow and the edge are studied numerically. The vertical flow is modeled by a point vortex, and the unsteady pressure coefficient is obtained from the velocity and the potential fields. To investigate the effects of the edge shape the rectangular forward step is chamfered wish various angles. Calculation shows that the pressure peaks become decreased by increasing the vortex height as well as the chamfering angle. The pressure amplitudes are very sensitive to the change of the initial vertex height and its strength. From this study we can find out that the chamfered edge has two effects; the one is that it suppresses the pressure amplitude generated from the edge, and the other is that it decreases the time variation of unsteady pressure fluctuation. These modifying concepts can be applied to attenuate the self-sustained oscillation mechanism at the open cavity flow.

  • Presented are heat data which describe the effect of interaction between bulk flow pulsations and a vortex embedded in a turbulent boundary layer. The pulsation frequencies are 3 Hz, 15 Hz and 30 Hz. A half delta wing with the same height as the boundary layer thickness is used to generate the vortex flow. The convection heat transfer coefficients on a constant heat-flux surface are measured by embedded 77 T-type thermocouples. Spanwise profiles of convection heat transfer coefficients show that upwash region of vortex flow is influenced by bulk flow pulsations. The local heat transfer coefficient increases approximately by 7 percent. The increase in the local change of convection heat transfer coefficient is attributed to the spanwise oscillatory motion of vortex flow especially at the low Strouhal number and to the periodic change of vortex size.
