  • Vent mixer can provide main flow directly into a recirculation region downstream of the mixer to enhance fuel-air mixing efficiency. Based on experimental results of three-dimensional velocity, vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy obtained by a stereoscopic PIV method, the performance of the vent mixer was compared with that of the step mixer which was used as a basic model. Thick shear layers of the vent mixer induced the increase of the penetration height. The turbulent kinetic energy mainly distributed along a boundary layer between the main flow and the jet plume. This turbulent field activates mass transfer in a mixing region, leading to the mixing enhancement.

  • The computational prediction method of speed performance for a ship with vortex generators is proposed. The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation has been solved together with the application of Reynolds stress turbulence model. The computations are carried out under identical conditions of the experimental method, i.e., towing and self-propulsion calculations without and with vortex generators. The speed performance in full scale is obtained through analyzing the computational results in model scale according to the revised model-ship performance analysis method of ITTC'78 with considering the vortex generators into account. The characteristics of resistance, self-propulsion and wake characteristics on the propeller plane are investigated. The proposed computational prediction clearly shows the effect of vortex generators and can be applicable to the design tool for vortex generators.

  • The particle dispersion in the turbulent mixing layer has been numerically investigated to clarify the effect of the velocity ratio in the large-scale vortical structures. In this study the LES with subgrid-scale model is employed. The Lagrangian method to predict the particle motion is applied. The particles of 10, 50, 150, 200${\mu}m$ in mean diameter were loaded into the origin of the mixing layer. It is shown that the characteristics of flow and growth rate are strongly dependent on the variation of the velocity ratio. It is also shown the relationship between the Stokes number and the particle dispersion. As a result, in the case of St~1 the particle dispersion is faster than the diffustion of the flow field while in the cases of both St<<1 and St>>1 it is shown that the particle dispersion in lower than the diffusion of the flow filed.

  • Current trends in propeller design have led to the need for extremely complex blade shapes, which place great demands on the accuracy of design and analysis methods. This paper presents a new proposal for improving the prediction of propeller performance with a vortex lattice method using the lifting surface theory. The paper presents a review of the theory and a description of the numerical methods employed. For 8 different propellers, the open water characteristics are calculated and compared with experimental data. The results are in good agreement in the region of a high advanced velocity, but there are differences in the other case. We have corrected the parameters for the trailing wake modeling in this paper, and repeated the calculation. The new calculation results are more in agreement with the experimental data.

  • Unsteady nature of a tip leakage vortex in an axial flow fan operating at a design and off-design operating conditions has been investigated by measuring the velocity fluctuation in a blade passage with a rotating hotwire probe sensor. Two hot-wire probe sensors rotating with the fan rotor were also introduced to obtain the cross-correlation coefficient between the two sensors located in the vortical flow as well as the fluctuating velocity. The results show that the vortical flow structure near the rotor tip can be clearly observed at the quasi-orthogonal planes to a tip leakage vortex. The leakage vortex is enlarged as the flow rate is decreased, thus resulting in the high blockage to main flow. The spectral peaks due to the fluctuating velocity near the rotor tip are mainly observed in the reverse flow region at higher flow rates than the peak pressure operating condition. However, no peak frequency presents near the rotor tip for near stall condition.

  • The objective of this study is to examine a DI(Direct Injection) gasoline spray development process under different ambient pressures using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). fuel spray experiments were performed within a constant volume chamber. The spray structure, velocity maps, velocity and vorticity contours were obtained to investigate its spray characteristics. It was found that higher ambient pressure has a significant effect on radial growth of the spray. The position which has a maximum velocity moved from the spray edge to the spray center as ambient pressure was increased. Higher ambient pressure moved a maximum vorticity position upward of the spray.

  • In this paper a Vortex Lattice Method is used to predict the performances of a contra-Rotating Propeller. Greeley and Kerwin's(1982) wake model is adopted instead of the exact trailing vortex geometry. The interaction of the two propellers is treated by the sense that the induction of one propeller upon the other propeller is averaged in the circumferential direction . Two single propellers (DTRC 4119 & DTRC 4842) are chosen and compared with the experimental and other numerical results published. Then the computational results for three CRP's (4-0-4 CRP(DTRC 3686+DTRC 3687A) 4-0-5 CRP(DTRC 3686+DTRC 3849) & DTRC CRT(DTRC 5067+DTRC 5068) are compared with the experimental and numerical results published. The interaction of both propellers by the change of inflow velocity and circulation of each propeller is investigated.

  • Image data produced from ADD water-tunnel test are currently analyzed manually. The accuracy and elapsed time of this process can be determined by observers. In this paper, the algorithm based on MATLAB for improved image data processing and analysis is proposed. This algorithm consists of camera calibration, gray-level transformation, noise filtering and binarization in image preprocessing, vortex trajectory measurement in image analysis. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better accuracy and execution speed than those of the existing methods.

  • A computational simulation for a nonslender BWB UCAV configuration with rounded leading edge and span of 1.0m was performed to analyze its aerodynamic characteristics. The freestream is 50m/s over -4 to 26 degree A.o.A.s. Reynolds number based on the mean chord length is $1.25{\times}10^6$. 3D multi block hexahedral grids are used which allow good grid quality and ease to capture boundary layer. ${\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ model as well as $k-{\omega}$ SST model is employed to assess the effect of transition for flow behavior. Drag and lift of the UCAV were well predicted while $C_M$ is under predicted at high angle of attacks and influenced by the turbulence models strongly. After assessing pressure distribution, skin friction lines and velocity field around the UCAV configuration, it was found that transition effect should be considered to enhance the prediction of aerodynamic behavior by a vortical flowfield.

  • This study analyzes the nonlinear interaction between two different vortex shedding frequencies from a cylinder with two diameters. In particular, two different vortex shedding frequencies are generated by preparing a cylinder having two diameters artificially. Flow velocity fluctuations behind the cylinder are measured three-dimensionally. Additionally, we fabricated a hole and placed a pressure transducer for measuring the pressure on the cylinder surface. The pressure signal from the pressure transducer is used as basic signal. A TSC(Trans Spectrum Coherence) is used for checking the strength of the nonlinear interaction between two different vortex shedding frequencies. As a result, the following are clarified: i) frequency distribution behind the cylinder, ii) three-dimensional flow state behind the cylinder through calculation of ensemble average, and iii) close relationship between the vertical vortex and change of low frequency by nonlinear interaction between two different vortex shedding frequencies from the cylinder with two diameters.
