  • This paper presents the results of investigation on the behavior of soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls in tiered arrangement using the finite element method of analysis. 2D finite element analyses were performed on tiered walls with two levels of offset distance. Cases with equivalent surcharge as suggested by the NCMA design guideline were additionally analyzed in an attempt to confirm the appropriateness of the equivalent surcharge model adopted by NCMA. Deformation characteristics of a tiered wall with small offset distance suggest a compound mode of failure and support current design approaches requiring a global slope stability analysis for design. Also revealed is that the interaction between the upper and lower walls significantly affects not only the performance of the lower wall but also the upper wall, suggesting that the upper walls should also be designed with due consideration of the interaction.

  • Crib wall is one of the segmental grid retaining walls using headers and stretchers to establish the framework of the wall. In this method, grids formed by the intersection of headers and stretchers are generally filled with the gravel to maintain the weight of the wall. Therefore, the construction can be carried out with higher speed and much economically when compared with the concrete retaining wall. Furthermore, it has high drain capacity, and environmentally friendly aspects also have been pointed out because the possibility of the planting at the front of the wall. However, in the wooden crib wall method, the relative movement between the individual headers and stretchers was generally recognized, and stress redistribution in the gravel filling was also observed when subjected to the external loading and self-weight of filling. In this study, it was analyzed fracture types and causes of wooden crib wall through detailed investigation and analysis of a large crib wall construction site. As a results, it occurred the damage in the members of 5.7% in a total of 2,315 locations and the damage of header occurred in the members of a header 80.2%. The 65.7% of the damaged header are concentrated in the lower part of crib wall. Therefore, it was analyzed the differences of fracture types and causes of wooden crib wall depending on the installation position and the kinds of members. It is considered basically the members of various forms of distortion and the grain affecting.

  • This paper presents the results of design case study on soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls in tiered configuration. Six different field walls were examined to investigate the appropriateness of their designs within the context of the current design guidelines based on limit equilibrium. Slope stability analysis against the compound failure mode, which is frequently ignored during design, was additionally performed based on the method recommended by FHWA design guidelines. The results indicate that the as-built designs of some of the walls examined do not meet the minimum factors of safety for the external and Internal stabilities, and for the compound failure mode. The implications of the findings from this study are discussed.

  • Reinforced earth retaining walls were developed in France in the 1970s and began to be applied in earnest to Korea in the 1990s. And now, about 1,300 reinforced soil retaining walls support the embankment of highways and bridge connections. The reinforced earth retaining wall construction technology has evolved day by day, and in recent years the reinforced earth retaining wall itself has been developed and introduced as a demonstration. However, various damages are constantly occurring in the reinforced earth retaining walls constructed throughout the highway. The cause of this was analyzed as minor defects in the design, construction, and maintenance stages. The solution for this is a change in perception of the importance of each individual process, but this does not form overnight. In this study, 30 years have passed since the introduction of the reinforced soil retaining wall on the highway, the damage cases were analyzed and categorized that have occurred in the reinforced soil retaining wall so far, and attempted to present a confrontation. As a result, the damage occurring on the reinforced soil retaining wall was divided into 10 types, and the causes and countermeasures in the design, construction, and maintenance stages for each were derived.

  • The purpose of this study is as follows. 1) An element to organize the landscape of an apartment entrance space and setting up, a characteristic of landscape through the actual condition analysis. 2) The characteristic of the type analysis and classified the shape of the entrance as the type. 3) The degree to like the landscape analysis through the making up question. The result of this research is as follows. The entrance of the apartment complex of 71 as of 92 and set an element to organize the landscape and the characteristic of landscape through the frequency analysis and divided an entrance landscape of apartment into 4 types through the cluster analysis. An entrance landscape of apartment types of the entrance is classified as follows. 1) Type I: A model wall-fence type, 2) Type II: The side constructing a building-fence type, 3) type III: The side constructing a building-retaining wall-mixing tree type, 4) type IV: The moulding constructing a building-a retaining wall type.

  • Most of flood protection walls built on the impingement in mountain rivers have been made of concrete. It may cause flood disasters because the smooth wall surface could increase flow velocity. In this study the hydraulic experiments was carried out to evaluate the effect of one side wall with rectangular vertical ribs on flow resistance in open channel. The ratio of the pitch between vertical ribs to its depth, ${\lambda}_{nv}$, was designed so that it include the so-called d type and k type roughness. The range of Froude number, $F_r$, based on hydraulic radius is 0.81~1.12. Flow resistance in the open channel with a rib sidewall depends on the interval length of each ribs and the flow discharge. Maximum flow resistance occurred when ${\lambda}_{nv}$ is 9. In the d type roughness which ${\lambda}_{nv}$ is less than 3, the flow resistance decreases with increase of flow discharge. In the k type roughness which ${\lambda}_{nv}$ is greater than 3, the flow resistance increases with increase of flow discharge. The increments of flow resistance are especially great when ${\lambda}_{nv}$ are 9 and 12. The resistance due to vertical rib is mostly by the shape resistance and the vertical rib on one sidewall of open channel affects on the flow resistance so that the equivalent roughness heights of vertical rib may occur in scale of flow depth. Therefore the vertical ribs may be used to reduce the flow velocity and to move the location of maximum flow velocity from the rib sidewall to the centerward in a cross section of channels.

  • Disaster sign data is confirmed data by the experts to the collected data from web and users. In this paper, we focused to make the risk scores to the data based on ontology technology. To analyse the data, first of all, we defined the ontological structure for 4 kinds of disaster types which consists of the bridges, workplaces, buildings, and walls. Base on the ontologies, collected the accidents examples, and then extract the risk rules from the examples. The rules are adjusted with frequencies and weights, and managed to the ontology DB. The rules apply to the disaster sign data, and then calculates the risk scores. It plays role of the index to the risk rates. The disaster sign data management system was implemented and the rules were verified to the system. Because the quality of the risk scores to the disaster sign data depends on the data of the accidents examples's qualities, we assure that the system's performance will be monotonic increasing following up the data upgrades. Continuously, data management is needed. Also the quality control of the rules are needed.
