  • This paper presents the design safety analysis of the inner tank structure, which is manufactured by 9 percent nickel steel sheets in the full containment type LNG storage tank. The FEM computed results indicate that top girder and several stiffener rings of the inner tank play an important role for controlling the deformation and stress intensity of the inner tank structure. The hydrostatic pressure due to cryogenic fluids gave more influential to the deformation of the inner tank wall compared with that of a cryogenic temperature of $-162^{\circ}C$. But, the deformation and stress of the inner tank. which is produced by the buckling loads, are very small because the external load is not applied to the top of the inner tank. This indicates the role of top girder and stiffener rings of the inner tank model is not important in full containment LNG storage tank.

  • The fuel storage vessel installed in CNG vehicles can be largely divided into 3 parts: head, cylinder, and dome. Studies of the cylinder and dome parts have already been performed, but sufficient design data is not available about the head part. Therefore, expert field engineers heavily depend upon trial-and-error methods. Therefore, FE analysis is performed to review the hot spinning process for forming the head part of the CNG vessel using the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method. The effects of forming factors on the load were analyzed. The values of the factors were chosen to avoid defects in the head part and buckling, and the forming feasibility of the head part was investigated. Furthermore, a bursting test was performed to evaluate the safety of the storage vessel.

  • The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of salt water on the mechanical properties of a high modulus carbon-epoxy composite. Specimens were made of a carbon-epoxy composite UPN139B of SK Chemical and tested under inplane tension and shear after 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months immersion in 3.5% salt water. Acceleration technique such as temperature elevation was not used. The tensile strengths and modulli in fiber and matrix direction did not show any remarkable degradation until 12 months immersion. In contrast to the tensile properties, shear strength and modulus started to gradually decrease up to about 10% of values of dry specimens after 12 months immersion. It was confirmed through the test that the material UPN139B can be an effective material for the shell structures in salt water to resist against the external pressure buckling because of the high fiber directional modulus and corrosion resistance.

  • In this study, the effect on the welding angle distortion was reviewed by carrying out a thermal elastic-plastic analysis while changing the cooling condition(width, length, and distance from weld torch to cooling torch) the back of the welding zone for the butt weld joint. The review results revealed that maximum 57% of reduction in the angle distortion was achieved when the distance between weld torch and cooling tip of 25mm, cooling length of 80mm, and cooling width of 30mm were maintained.

  • In a large scale of excavation for the foundation of large-sized structures and underground structures, a considerable amount of earth pressure can occur. Steel beams that have been used to form a temporary structure to support earth pressure may be less economical and less efficient in resisting the high earth pressure. To cope with this problem, PCT(Precast Concrete Truss) system has been devised and investigated both experimentally and analytically. A proper connection method between the concrete truss members was proposed to accommodate fast assembly and disassembly. Full-scale test of PCT system was performed to verify the load-carrying capacity of the PCT system including the connections. The test results were compared with those of structural analysis. The test specimen which corresponds to PCT strut attained the ultimate load without buckling, but the detail of connector members needs to be improved. It is expected that precast concrete truss members can be efficiently incorporated into a temporary structure for deep and large excavation by replacing conventional steel beams.

  • The tendency to use a probabilistic design method rather than a deterministic design method for the design of nuclear power plants (NPPs) will increase because their safety should be considered and strictly controlled in relation to various causes of damage. The distance between a seismically isolated NPP structure and a moat wall is called the clearance to stop. The clearance to stop is obtained from the 90th percentile displacement response of a seismically isolated NPP subject to a beyond design basis earthquake (BDBE) in the probabilistic design method. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of heating and buckling effects on the 90th percentile displacement response of a lead-rubber bearing (LRB) subject to a BDBE. The analysis results show that considering the heating and buckling effects to estimate the clearance to stop is conservative in the evaluation of the 90th percentile displacement response. If these two effects are not taken into account in the calculation of the clearance to stop, the underestimation of the clearance to stop causes unexpected damage because of an increase in the collision probability between the moat wall and the seismically isolated NPP.

  • The use of modular buildings is increasing because of various advantages of modular buildings. But there are limits to apply modular buildings to medium-rise buildings because the building law provides only the specification criteria of the modular building with respect to the 1 hour fire resistance performance. This study was conducted to investigate 2 hours fire resistance performance of load bearing walls with steel studs in modular buildings by KS F 2257-1 and KS F 2257-4. After full scale tests, load bearing walls ensuring two hours fire resistance performance consist of at least 2 layers of fire resistance plaster boards of 19mm thickness or 3 layer of fire resistance plaster boards of thickness.

  • Residual stresses have remained around welding areas of a steel structure member after welding operation. The major causes to occur these residual stresses are the local heat due to a welding, the heat stresses due to a irregular and rapid cooling condition, the material and rigidity of a steel structure. Ultimatly, these residual stresses have been known to decrease a brittle fracture strength, a fatigue strength, a buckling strength, dynamic properties, and the corrosion resistance of the material. This paper deals with the residual stresses on a steel structure member through experimental studies. SWS 58 plates were welded by the method of X-groove type. These plates were layed on the heat treatment at four different temperatures; $350^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. The resulting residual Stresses were measured by hole drilling method, and the followings were obtained. The residual stresses on the vicinity of a welding point were relieved most effectively at the temperature of $650^{\circ}C$, and these stresses relieved completly when the ratio of a hole diamerter to a hole depth became unity. Hardness test shows that the higher value of hardness at the heat affected zone dropped to belower as the temperature went up from $350^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$. The Welding input heats have not influenced the magnitude of residual stresses at the input heat range between above and below one forth than standard.
