  • Oats are an important crop for forage production with good palatability of livestock. Compared with other winter cereals crops for forage, oats may be widely sowing, autumn (October), spring (early of March) and summer (late of August). The objectives of this study were to compare the effects of sowing dates and varieties on the growth, forage yield and feed quality. Oat were sown in 14 October and 10 March, and harvested 20 days after heading in middle region of Korea. Varieties used were the 3 winter oat cultivars with cold tolerant and 3 cultivars for summer sowing. Heading was delayed about 12 days in spring sowing than in autumn sowing and the difference among varieties was 8 days. The rate of spike and leaf above aerial parts reduced and the rate of culm increased in spring sowing than in autumn. The variety 'Donghan' was higher the rate of spike and lower the rate of culm than that of other varieties. In spring sowing than in autumn, acid detergent fiber (ADF) content was higher, and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and digestible dry matter (DDM) content was lower. In DDM content surveyed on 20 days after heading, 'Donghan' was higher in autumn sowing and 'Samhan' in spring sowing than that of other varieties. The oat variety 'Samhan', 'Donghan' and 'Chohan' were higher fresh yield in autumn than in spring, but similar dry matter yield. The variety 'Swan', 'Darkhorse' and 'Hispeed' were higher fresh and dry matter yield in spring than in autumn. The variety 'Donghan' can supplement high quality forage production in middle region at October and March because of the high-tillering and rate of spike per aerial part.

  • To better understand the allelopathic effect of sorghum(Sorghum vulgare L.), the inhibitory activities of water extracts of the stem, leaf and root, and of residues of the stem to major crops and weeds associated with them were evaluated. The allelopathic activity of sorghum plants was species specific, and depended on source and concentration. Germination, and shoot and root length of all test species were inhibited by the different concentrations of the stem extract. Among the crop species, radish showed the most inhibition, followed by wheat and rice. Maize was the least sensitive species. Of the weed species, Ipomoea triloba was most inhibited, followed by Echinochloa colona and Rottboellia cochinchinensis. The water extracts of leaves, stems, and roots significantly inhibited germination and seedling growth in E. colona and radish. The stem extract gave the greatest inhibitory effect on E. colona while all three extracts produced similar response in radish. In the greenhouse trial, sorghum stem residue placed on the soil surface as mulch significantly inhibited seedling growth in E. colona and radish, but not that in rice.

  • Six pathogenic Pythium isolates obtained from diseased ginger rhizomes were identified as Pythum myriotyrum Drechsler based on various morphological and physiological characteristics. The isolates showed strong virulence on underground parts of buds, crowns, rhizomes, roots and aerial parts of leaves and stems as well. The isolates caused rot of germinated seeds of 10 different crops tested, including cucumber and pepper, and markedly inhibited seedling growth of 3 crops tested, including corn and barley. Maximum, optimum and minimum growth temperatures for P. myriotylum were 39~45$^{\circ}C$, 33~37$^{\circ}C$ and 5~7$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Optimum pH for the growth was 6~7. Mycelial linear growth was most rapid on V-8 juice agar, but aerial mycelia were most abundant on PDA and corn meal agar. Zoosporangial and oogonial formation was greatest on V-8 juice agar. Optimum temperatures for the production of zoosporangia and oogonia were 20~35$^{\circ}C$ and 15$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • CHA, Jong Whan (Dept. of Biology, College of Education, Seoul National University). Effect of gibberallin on the growth and internal componsents of Astragalus sinicus L. Kor. Jour. Bot. V(4) : 1-5, 1962. The effect of GA on the growth as well as on the internal components of the leaves of Astragalus sinicus L. under the soil culture was investigated. The result has indicated that small variation in the relative concentration of GA treated on the leaves shows a marked influence on the internal components of the plants. The increase of growth was associated with increasing intensity of GA. Chlorophyll and carotene contents in the leaves were depressed with increasing concentration of GA. It was noticed that the growth was pomoted with the decrease of the contents of chlorophyll and carotene. In contrast the aacorbic acid in the leaves treated with GA decreased in proportion to the degree of the concentration of GA. Carotens content varied with chlorophyll, although the ratio of chlorophyll to carotene was not so high as the results obtained by Beck and Redman. Chlorophyll and ascorbic acid values with respect to growth differed greatly during the two experimental periods. The chlorophyll content was found highly significant in this experimental periods. The chlorophyll content was found highly significant in this experiment. As the concentration of GA was increased, it was noticed that there was a reduction of anthocyanin, sucrose, and reducing sugar contents. The anthocyanin content was not so high in this study as in the results obtained from the corn by Jacob Straus.

  • The objective of this experiment was to evaluate chemical composition, dry matter(DM) digestibility, DM intake, relative feed value(RFV) and hay grade of imported roughage which was collected by wholesale dealer at Chungnam province in 1999. Experimental roughages includes 8 kinds of imported hays(com stover bale, tall fescue straw, green cell, bermudagrass straw, reed carnarygrass straw, alfalfa bale, sugarcane bale and oat hay) and mixture hay(control) which was harvested at Chungnam National University experimental field. Compared with mixture hay(control) except for alfalfa bale, crude protein of most imported roughage was low, but NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin compound were high. Futhermore, DM digestibility, DM intake, RFV and hay grade of imported roughage except for alfalfa bale was significantly lower than those of mixture hay(control)(P<0.05). Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the economic value in the aspect of quality for the imported roughages.

  • This study was carried out to establish a novel bioassay system for screening of compounds affecting aromatic amino acid or anthocyanin biosynthesis through investigating a degree of sucrose-induced anthocyanin formation such as size of plant material, buffer conditions, light intensity and irradiated duration, incubation temp., etc were determined and standard procedure (suitable experimental condition) was set up as follows. The second leaf blade of white corn seeding induced by fluridone treatment were segmented into a size of 5${\times}$5 min. The segments were floated on the solution of 1% sucrose in 1.0mM MES buffer (pH6.0∼6.5) and incubated at 26$^{\circ}C$ for 2days under the continuous light condition(70∼100$\mu$mol m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ ). Anthocyanin in the purpled tissues was extracted with methanol containing 1% HCl and the optical density of the clear supematants was determined at 528mm. Influences of some chemicals were tested using this system. Glyphosate, 5-enolpyruvylshikimate 3-phosphate synthase inhibitor, showed most sensitive response with I$_{50}$ value at 3.3$\mu$M. Dicyclohexylcarbodiimide(DCCD) and parachloromercuribenzenesulfonic acid(PCMBS) had a relatively strong ingibition with I50 value at 7.1$\mu$M and 10.2$\mu$M, respectively. These results show that sucrose-induced anthocyanin formation in white com leaf segment provide a very simple and rapid system for searching new compounds affecting aromatic amino acid or anteocyanin biosynthesis by screening at less than 10$\mu$M.

  • As the consumption of corn increases, the production of by-products is also increasing. In this study, functional substances and antioxidant activities of corn by-products were investigated to determine their applicability as functional materials. Total polyphenol, flavonoid contents, and ABTS antioxidant activity were the highest in leaves. The total phenolic acid content was the highest in cobs; p-coumaric and ferulic acid were the main components. Phytosterol content in leaves and stems was high at 64 and 50 days after sowing, 261.4 and 274.7 mg/100 g, respectively. β-sitosterol of the leaves and stems was the highest, 149.2 and 138.7 mg/100 g. The total phytosterol content of grains and by-products harvested 106 days after sowing was in the order of: corn silk, husk, grain, leaf, stem, and cob. Among the phytosterols, β-sitosterol was the highest, followed by stigmasterol and campesterol, and the composition was different depending on part. The total phytosterol content was the highest in husk and corn silk, but the stems and leaves, which account for 50% of the total corn biomass, also contained high phytosterol content. Therefore, corn leaves and stems are expected to be used as functional raw materials for the development of functional materials in the future.

  • On a newly reclaimed acidic soil, investigation was made to find out the influence of lime and phosphorus application by a large quantity on the uptake of zinc by corn and its distribution in leaves and stem, under a factorial combination with two levels of zinc, lime, and phosphorus with three kinds of soil texture. The results are summarized as following, 1. The concentration of zinc in stem reflected the zinc uptake status of corn better than the leaves. The concentration of zinc in stem responded clearly to the treatments of lime and zinc, while those of leaves tended to be constant regardless of the application of lime and zinc. 2. The zinc uptake was not improved by compost application though it increased the yield of corn significantly. 3. The application of lime for neutralization of soil with low level of phosphorus application affected the yield of dry matter differently among different soils, slight increase on sandy loam soil, slight decrease on loam soil, and significant decrease on clay loam soil. The yield decrease on clay soil is considered to be due to the decreased availability of applied phosphorus owing to the large amount of lime applied.

  • This study was carried out to know the effect of temperature, light intensity and $CO_2$ concentration on photosynthesis and respiration in Wasabi (Wasabia japonica Matsum). The optimum temperature for photosynthesis in Wasabi was $17{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ and dark respiration rate was increased with the increasing of temperature from, $15 ^{\circ}C\;to\;30^{\circ}C$. Light compensation point was $6.0\;{\mu}E\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in Wasabi and $36.7\;{\mu}E\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in Corn, and light saturation point was $600{\mu}E\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, similar in Wasabi and Corn. $CO_2$, compensation point was 67.3ppm in Wasabi and 11.6 ppm in Corn. Photorespiration rate in Wasabi leaf at $l000{\mu}E\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ light intensity was 3.3 mg$CO_2$, $dm^{-2}hr^{-1}$, and then was gradually decreased as light intensity decreased. Stomatal frequency was about $76\;mm^{-2}$ on the adaxial surface and $623\;mm^{-2}$ on the abaxial surface, and the size of stomata was about 1$12{\mu}m$ on the adaxial surface and $17{\mu}m$ on the abaxial surface of the leaf.
