Development and reproduction of the rice armyworm, Pseudaletia separara, were investigated on different diets (corn leaf, rice leaf, Chinese cabbage leaf, cabbage leaf, sweetpotato leaf, soybean leaf and silkworm artificial diet). Egg and pupal periods were not different among the diets. But larval periods showed significant difference among diets. Developmental period from egg to adult was shortest as 32.5 d on corn leaf and longest as 46.6 d on soybean leaf. At 16 days after hatching, larval weights on rice and silkworm artificial diet were heavier than those on other diets. The larvae reared on cabbage leaf and sweetpotato leaf failed to pupate. Survival rates from larva to adult were highest (70.6%) on com leaf lowest (39.8%) on soybean leaf. The longevity of female adults was not affected by the larval diets. Female adults showed higher fecundity when the larvae were fed with corn leaf, rice leaf and silkworm artificial diet than other diets. Net reproduction rate (R$_{0}$) was highest as 1218.5 on silkworm artificial diet. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (R$_{0}$) ranged from 0.115 to 0.175, and was maximum on com leaf.
Leaf characteristics of main stem and tiller of IK type maize (IK/ /IRI/B68) were compared with those of Jinjoo Ok hybrid which are not usually tillered. A total of nine leaves from flag leaf to the third or the fourth leaf below ear-bearing node were sampled from each stem or tiller. There was no significant difference in mean leaf length between IK/ /IRI/B68 and Jinjoo Ok. But the mean leaf width of IK/ /IRI/ B68 was about 2 cm narrower than that of Jinjoo Ok. The mean leaf area of the IK/ /IRI/B68 was also smaller than that of Jinjoo Ok due to the narrower leaf width. There were not significant differences in mean leaf characteristics between main stem and tillers of IK/IRI/B68. The longest leaf was the leaf below the ear-bearing node and the widest leaf was the leaf just above the ear-bearing node. Mean length. width and area of leaf on main stem and tillers were similar. Coefficients of variation calculated for individual leaf indicated that the leaves near the ear-bearing node were more uniform than others. The leaf area measured was significantly greater than that estimated by formular, length x width x 0.75. New constant to estimate leaf area of tillering maize was derived as 0.8.
The effects of plant hormones (NAA, $GA_3$ and BA) and light qualities (white, red, green and blue light) on the changes of reducing sugar contents and invertase isozyme activities in leaves of maize (Zea mars L.) and mung bean (Phseolw radiatus L.) seedlings were investigated. NAA accelerated the increase of reducing sugar contents and invertase isozyme activities, on the contrary, $GA_3$ had little effect in the accumulation of reducing sugar and in the increase of enzyme activities from the leaves of maize and mung bean seedlings. On the other hand, BA accelerated an increase in the activities of the invertase isozyme from the leaves of mung bean seedlings whereas it had little effect in the increase of the enzyme activities from those of maize seedlings. The accumulation of reducing sugar in leaves of both seedlings was promoted by red light irradiation compared to white light irradiation, while the activities of the enzyme were little affected by various light Qualities. In the simultaneous applications of plant hormone and light quality, NAA with white light was very effective in the increase of reducing sugar contents and the enzyme activities from the leaves of mung bean seedlings, whereas NAA application with blue light showed a prominent enhancement in the reducing sugar contents and the enzyme activities from those of maize seedlings. These results suggest that plant hormone, particularly NAA, may be a more important factor than various light Qualities in the stimulation of invertase activity.

This study was carried out to evaluate the dyeing possibility of purple corn stem and leaf. The UV absorbance of the purple corn stem extract and leaf extract at different pH does not change. It is considered to use to efficiently measure the purple corn pigment content when using UV absorbance at 520~560 nm. By adjusting higher pH values in the extraction dyed fabrics, silk and cotton fabric used by the purple corn leaf extraction decreased lightness and redness. Extent for dyeing the fabric depending on the concentration, lightness and redness showed a tendency to increase color values when silk and cotton concentration increases. Also when the longer the dyeing time, silk and cotton increased lightness but redness decreased.
In this study, Zea mays L., which were discarded after harvesting in Korea, were collected and used for experiment. The Zea mays L. were dried in the shade and ground before being extracted using two solvents. Subsequently, DPPH, ABTS, the total flavonoid content and the total polyphenol content were measured to analyze antioxidant activity. The diameter of clear zone was measured by using the paper disc diffusion method. The results showed that the ethanol extract had a slightly higher antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The total polyphenol content was measured using gallic acid as standard, and CE(ethanol extract) was found to contain $31.2{\pm}5.2mg\;GAE/g$ of polyphenols, indicating a considerably high activity. When DPPH radical scavenging ability was measured, CE was found to have $4.6{\pm}0.9%$, $6.4{\pm}0.5%$, $22.9{\pm}0.6%$ and $83.2{\pm}0.2%$ at different concentrations of $1{\mu}g/mL$, $10{\mu}g/mL$, $100{\mu}g/mL$, and $1,000{\mu}g/mL$, respectively, with a dependent tendency at the concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ and a considerably high activity at the concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$. This study is expected to be used as preliminary data to develop new natural antioxidant, antibacteria raw materials, as only little research has been undertaken on Zea mays L., which are mostly discarded after harvesting, while many studies have been so far conducted on corn and corn silks.
Ethanol extracts from 46 plants were tested for their fungicidal activity against six plant diseases consisting of Maynaporthe grisea, Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, Phytophthora infestans, Puccinia recondita, and Erysiphe graminis in the greenhouse studies. Strong activity at 5 and 10 mg/pot was produced from the extracts of Helianthus annuus flowers and Zea mays leaves against P. grisea. In a test with B. cineara, extracts of H. annuus leaves, H. annuus flowers, Chrysanthmum coronarium var. spatiosum, Cucurbita moschata seeds, Lycopersicon esculentum, Z. mays, and Z. mays leaves had strong activities at 5 mg/pot. In a test with P. recondita, strong activity was obtained from the extracts of Capsicum frutescens, C. moschata seeds, H. annuus seeds, L. esculentum, and Malva veticillata at 5 mg/pot. Against E. graminis, extracts of Cucumis sativus, H. annuus seeds, Salanum tuberosum, Z. mays, and Z. mays leaves produced strong activities at 10 mg/pot. All the extracts were ineffective against P. infestans and R. solani. Among seven extracts tested, the extracts of H. annuus leaves and flowers were highly effective against all the strains of B. cinerea resistant to carbendazim, procymidone, and diethofencarb. Furthermore, potent fungicidal activity was produced from the extracts of C. coronarium var. spatiosum and C. moschata seeds against the SSR, SRR, and RSR strains of B. cinerea, and Z. mays and Z. mays leaves against SSR and RSR. Extract of L. esculentum showed very strong activity only against RRS of B. cinerea.
${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a non-proteinogenic amino acid biosynthesized through decarboxylation of L-glutamic acid by glutamic acid decarboxylase. GABA is believed to play a role in defense against stress in plants. In humans, it is known as one of the major inhibitory neurotransmitters in the central nervous system, exerting anti-hypertensive and anti-diabetic effects. In this report, we wanted to enhance the GABA production from the barley leaf and corn silk by culturing them with lactic acid bacteria (LAB). The barley leaf and corn silk were mixed with various weight combinations and were fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum in an incubator at $30^{\circ}C$ for 48 h. After extracting the fermented mixture with hot water, we evaluated the GABA production by thin layer chromatography and GABase assay. We found that the fermented mixture of the barley leaf and corn silk in a nine to one ratio contained a higher level of GABA than other ratios, meaning that the intermixture and fermentation technique was effective in increasing the GABA content. We also tested several biological activities of the fermented extracts and found that the extracts of the fermented mixture showed improved antioxidant activities than the non-fermented extracts and no indication of cytotoxicity. These results suggest that our approach on combining the barley leaf and corn silk and its fermentation with LAB could lead to the possibility of the development of functional foods with high levels of GABA content and improved biological activities.

A meridic artificial diet, including whole milk powder, wheat bran, maize leaf powder, and sucrose as the main nutrients, was tested for rearing Locusta migratoria (Orthoptera: Acrididae). When locusts were supplied with only the artificial diet over their entire life cycle, a second generation was not produced. The same result was observed when the diet was supplied daily and fresh maize leaves were supplied every other day. However, when the diet and fresh maize leaves were supplied alternately every other day, four generations of L. migratoria were produced. Fecundity in adults reared with the alternating diet was higher than that in adults supplied with both the diet and maize leaves daily. These results indicate that this artificial diet could be used as a supplementary food for rearing of L. migratoria.
