  • Satellite imagery occurs geometric and radiometric errors due to external environmental factors at the acquired time, which in turn causes false-alarm in change detection. These errors should be eliminated by geometric and radiometric corrections. In this study, we propose a methodology that automatically and simultaneously performs geometric and radiometric corrections by using the SURF (Speeded-Up Robust Feature) algorithm and the mask filter. The MPs (Matching Points), which show invariant properties between multi-temporal imagery, extracted through the SURF algorithm are used for automatic geometric correction. Using the properties of the extracted MPs, PIFs (Pseudo Invariant Features) used for relative radiometric correction are selected. Subsequently, secondary PIFs are extracted by generated mask filters around the selected PIFs. After performing automatic using the extracted MPs, we could confirm that geometric and radiometric errors are eliminated as the result of performing the relative radiometric correction using PIFs in geo-rectified images.

  • It is necessary to quickly detect and respond to ship accidents that occur continuously due to the influence of the recently increased maritime traffic. For this purpose, ship detection research is being actively conducted based on satellite images that can be monitored in real time over a wide area. However, there is a possibility that the wake may be falsely detected as a ship because the wake removal is not performed in previous studies that performed ship detection using spectral characteristics. Therefore, in this study, ship detection was performed using SDI (Ship Detection Index) based on the Sentinel-2A satellite image, and the wake was removed by utilizing the difference in the spectral characteristics of the ship and the wake. Probability of detection (POD) and false alarm rate (FAR) indices were used to verify the accuracy of the ship detection algorithm in this study. As a result of the verification, POD was similar and FAR was improved by 6.4% compared to the result of applying only SDI.

  • LIDAR data are useful for forest applications such as bare-earth DEM generation for forest areas, and estimation of tree height and forest biomass. As a core preprocessing procedure for most forest applications, this study attempts to develop an efficient method to detect forest areas from LIDAR data. First, we suggest three perceptual cues based on multiple return characteristics, height deviation and spatial distribution, being expected as reliable perceptual cues for forest area detection from LIDAR data. We then classify the potential forest areas based on the individual cue and refine them with a bi-morphological process to eliminate falsely detected areas and smoothing the boundaries. The final refined forest areas have been compared with the reference data manually generated with an aerial image. All the methods based on three types of cues show the accuracy of more than 90%. Particularly, the method based on multiple returns is slightly better than other two cues in terms of the simplicity and accuracy. Also, it is shown that the combination of the individual results from each cue can enhance the classification accuracy.

  • In this paper, we discussed automatic target tracking algorithms for diver detection sonar that observes penetration forces of coastal military installations and major infrastructures. First of all, we analyzed sea trial data in diver detection sonar and composed automatic target tracking algorithms based on track existence probability as track quality measure in clutter environment. In particular, these are presented track management algorithms which include track initiation, confirmation, termination, merging and target tracking algorithms which include single target tracking IPDAF (Integrated Probabilistic Data Association Filter) and multitarget tracking LMIPDAF (Linear Multi-target Integrated Probabilistic Data Association Filter). And we analyzed performances of automatic target tracking algorithms using sea trial data and monte carlo simulation data.

  • In this paper, we propose an unmanned vehicle scratch detection deep learning model for car sharing services. Conventional scratch detection models consist of two steps: 1) a deep learning module for scratch detection of images before and after rental, 2) a manual matching process for finding newly generated scratches. In order to build a fully automatic scratch detection model, we propose a one-step unmanned scratch detection deep learning model. The proposed model is implemented by applying transfer learning and fine-tuning to the deep learning model that detects changes in satellite images. In the proposed car sharing service, specular reflection greatly affects the scratch detection performance since the brightness of the gloss-treated automobile surface is anisotropic and a non-expert user takes a picture with a general camera. In order to reduce detection errors caused by specular reflected light, we propose a preprocessing process for removing specular reflection components. For data taken by mobile phone cameras, the proposed system can provide high matching performance subjectively and objectively. The scores for change detection metrics such as precision, recall, F1, and kappa are 67.90%, 74.56%, 71.08%, and 70.18%, respectively.

  • Agricultural reservoirs are essential structures for water supplies during dry period in the Korean peninsula, where water resources are temporally unequally distributed. For efficient water management, systematic and effective monitoring of medium-small reservoirs is required. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) provides a way for continuous monitoring of those, with its capability of all-weather observation. This study aims to evaluate the applicability of SAR in monitoring medium-small reservoirs using Sentinel-1 (10 m resolution) and Capella X-SAR (1 m resolution), at Chari (CR), Galjeon (GJ), Dwitgol (DG) reservoirs located in Ulsan, Korea. Water detected results applying Z fuzzy function-based threshold (Z-thresh) and Chan-vese (CV), an object detection-based segmentation algorithm, are quantitatively evaluated using UAV-detected water boundary (UWB). Accuracy metrics from Z-thresh were 0.87, 0.89, 0.77 (at CR, GJ, DG, respectively) using Sentinel-1 and 0.78, 0.72, 0.81 using Capella, and improvements were observed when CV was applied (Sentinel-1: 0.94, 0.89, 0.84, Capella: 0.92, 0.89, 0.93). Boundaries of the waterbody detected from Capella agreed relatively well with UWB; however, false- and un-detections occurred from speckle noises, due to its high resolution. When masked with optical sensor-based supplementary images, improvements up to 13% were observed. More effective water resource management is expected to be possible with continuous monitoring of available water quantity, when more accurate and precise SAR-based water detection technique is developed.

  • In the event of a disaster accident at sea, the scale of damage will vary due to weather effects such as wind, currents, and tidal waves, and it is obligatory to minimize the scale of damage by establishing appropriate control plans through quick on-site identification. In particular, it is difficult to identify pollutants that exist in a thin film at sea surface due to their relatively low viscosity and surface tension among pollutants discharged into the sea. Therefore, this study aims to develop an algorithm to detect suspended pollutants on the sea surface in RGB images using imaging equipment that can be easily used in the field, and to evaluate the performance of the algorithm using input data obtained from actual waters. The developed algorithm uses image enhancement techniques to improve the contrast between the intensity values of pollutants and general sea surfaces, and through histogram analysis, the background threshold is found, suspended solids other than pollutants are removed, and finally pollutants are classified. In this study, a real sea test using substitute materials was performed to evaluate the performance of the developed algorithm, and most of the suspended marine pollutants were detected, but the false detection area occurred in places with strong waves. However, the detection results are about three times better than the detection method using a single threshold in the existing algorithm. Through the results of this R&D, it is expected to be useful for on-site control response activities by detecting suspended marine pollutants that were difficult to identify with the naked eye at existing sites.

  • Recently, tremendous amounts of unstructured text data that is distributed through news, blogs, and social media has gained much attention from many researchers and practitioners as this data contains abundant information about various consumers' opinions. However, as the usefulness of text data is increasing, more and more attempts to gain profits by distorting text data maliciously or nonmaliciously are also increasing. This increase in spam text data not only burdens users who want to obtain useful information with a large amount of inappropriate information, but also damages the reliability of information and information providers. Therefore, efforts must be made to improve the reliability of information and the quality of analysis results by detecting and removing spam data in advance. For this purpose, many studies to detect spam have been actively conducted in areas such as opinion spam detection, spam e-mail detection, and web spam detection. In this study, we introduce core concepts and current research trends of spam detection and propose a methodology to detect the spam tag of a blog as one of the challenging attempts to improve the reliability of blog information.

  • Due to the characteristics of microwave signals, Radar satellite image has been used for flood detection without weather and time influence. The more methods of flood detection were developed, the more detection rate of flood area has been increased. Since flood causes a lot of damages, flooded area should be distinguished from non flooded area. Also, the detection of flood area should be accurate. Therefore, not only image resolution but also the filtering process is critical to minimize resolution degradation. Although a resolution of radar images become better as technology develops, there were a limited focused on a highly suitable filtering methods for flood detection. Thus, the purpose of this study is to find out the most appropriate filtering method for flood detection by comparing three filtering methods: Lee filter, Frost filter and NL-means filter. Therefore, to compare the filters to detect floods, each filters are applied to the radar image. Comparison was drawn among filtered images. Then, the flood map, results of filtered images are compared in that order. As a result, Frost and NL-means filter are more effective in removing the speckle noise compared to Lee filter. In case of Frost filter, resolution degradation occurred severly during removal of the noise. In case of NL-means filter, shadow effect which could be one of the main reasons that causes false detection were not eliminated comparing to other filters. Nevertheless, result of NL-means filter shows the best detection rate because the number of shadow pixels is relatively low in entire image. Kappa coefficient is scored 0.81 for NL-means filtered image and 0.55, 0.64 and 0.74 follows for non filtered image, Lee filtered image and Frost filtered image respectively. Also, in the process of NL-means filter, speckle noise could be removed without resolution degradation. Accordingly, flooded area could be distinguished effectively from other area in NL-means filtered image.
