  • This paper suggests that coefficients models of the Earth's gravitational potential can be used to calculate height anomalies which are then reduced to the geoid undulation to determine more precise geoid undulation. The potential coefficients and modified coefficients of EGM96 and KODEM33 digital elevation model in and around the Korean peninsula were used for this study. The magnitude of height anomaly computed in this study reached 0.025 m and the mean vaule showed -0.015 m. In this study, geometrical geoid undulation was derived from GPS/Leveling data for evaluating the precisely computed geoid undulation. In comparison with geometric and gravimetric geoid undulations, mean value and standard deviation of the differences showed 0.0114 m and 0.2817 m respectively and it showed the improvement of results.

  • An activated sludge from alcohol fermentation was applied on rice field to determine the effect of the sludge on rice growth and its optimum application rate. The mineralization of sludge was rather rapid compared to compost and about 60% of the total nitrogen in sludge applied was decomposed. Plant growth and nitrogen content in plant increased as sludge application rate increased but the yield markedly decreased when more than 1,600kg/10a of sludge was applied. The optimum application rate was found to be 800kg/10a. Results from this experiment confirm that the sludge from alcohol fermentation is potentially useful resources for organic fertilizers and soil amendments.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the terminal residue of a new fungicide, KNF 1002, in cucumber and pepper under greenhouse and field conditions. When a microemulsion formulation (20%) of KNF 1002 was applied once or twice during $1{\sim}7$ days before harvest, its terminal residue in cucumber ranged <$0.02{\sim}0.20\;mg/kg$ under greenhouse condition. In pepper, its figure recorded $0.31{\sim}0.79\;mg/kg$ and $0.11{\sim}0.28\;mg/kg$ under greenhouse and field conditions, respectively. Much higher level of terminal residues was observed in leaves than those in fruits in pepper, showing $7.38{\sim}25.20\;mg/kg$ and $0.11{\sim}1.99\;mg/kg$ under greenhouse and field conditions, respectively. Cultivation condition affected evidently the residue level in pepper harvests. Residual pattern of KNF 1002 seemed to be comparable to strobilurin fungicides currently used.

  • Isopyrazam, a new pyrazolecarboxamide fungicide developed by Syngenta, was highly active against foliar powdery mildew pathogens on cucumber, oriental melon and various vegetables. Following foliar applications on cucumber and oriental melon, crop residues were determined using high performance liquid chromatography. For all studies, limit of quantification was 0.02 mg/kg and minimum detection level was 2.0 ng and recoveries were 83.0-88.0% on cucumber, 92.4-104.5% on oriental melon. Isopyrazam was detected 0.07-0.72 mg/kg on cucumber and < 0.02-0.68 mg/kg on oriental melon, respectively. The TMDI (Theoretical Maximum Dailly Intake) of isopyrazam on cucumber and oriental melon was estimated to less than 1.765% of ADI.

  • By releasing predatory mite, Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot, with 25 individuals per cucumber plant in a commercial greenhouse (1,600 $m^2$), the population of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), was kept under the economic threshold level. The initial thrips population of 18.3 individuals per leaf decreased to 2.1 individuals per leaf after four weeks, while the number of A. swirskii reached to 16.6 individuals per leaf. It was also observed that at a point where the thrips occurred in high density of about 34.3 individuals per leaf, A. swirskii population built up on the lower part of cucumber plant first, but as time passed the predatory mites moved upward to the top of the plant and aggregated.

  • 42 compounds such as ester, sulfonyl ester, phosphoyl ester and ether derivatives of 4-isopropylphenol (I) and 2-isopropylphenol (II) were synthesized. These derivatives were identified by IR, GC/MS and $^{1}H-NMR$ spectra. Their in vitro antifungal activities were tested against 10 plant pathogenic fungi. Among them, several compounds showed potent in vitro antifungal activity. The selected compounds showing potent in vitro antifungal activity were tested for their in vivo antifungal acitvities against 5 plant diseases such as rice blast, rice sheath blast, cucumber anthracnose, cucumber gray mold and tomato late blight. As a result, 2-isopropylphenyl piperonyloate (II-7a) showed a potent in vivo antifungal activity against cucumber anthracnose and tomato late blight, 4-isopropylphenyl 4-methoxybenzenesulfonate (I-6b) effectively inhibited the development of rice blast.

  • This paper describes an accuracy analysis of newly developed gravimetric geoid and an improvement of developed geoid using GPS/Levelling data. We developed the KGEOID05 model corrected with the correction term. The correction term is modelled using the difference between GPS/Levelling derived geoidal heights and gravimetric geoidal heights. The stochastic model used in the calculation of correction term is the least squares collocation technique based on second-order Markov covariance function. 373 GPS stations were used to model the correction term. The standard deviation of KGEOID05 is about 11 cm and it indicates that we can be determined accurate heights ($2{\sim}3\;cm$) when we made precise modelling using KGEOID05 and a few GPS measurements for the local area.

  • A pot experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of boron on the growth, symptom, yield, and content of boron in Perilla(Perilla frutescens var. japonica HARA), Melon(Cucumis melo L.) and Cucumber(Cucumis sativus L.). The results obtained are as follows. Perilla. melon and cucumber uptake a lot of boron from the soil, and toxic effects of boron result in leaf tip yellowing by progressive necrosis. Yield of perilla, melon and cucumber are decreased at the $3{\sim}5mg\;kg^{-1}$, $5{\sim}10mg\;kg^{-1}$ of boron applicated in soil, respectively. Boron content in the leaf is the highest among various parts plant, and the tip and margin of the leaf contained more boron than central part of the leaf. Boron applicated was moved and accumulated to the plant and soil.
