Study of the Critical Gas Flow through an Orifice (오리피스를 통하는 임계 기체 유동에 관한 연구)

  • Gas flow through orifice is encountered in many diverse fields of engineering applications. In order to investigate the critical gas flow through an orifice system, a computational analysis is performed using axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations which are numerically solved by a fully implicit finite volume method. In the present study, the discharge coefficients of two different types of orifices which are a straight-bore orifice and a sharp-edged orifice, are predicted to obtain the critical flow conditions. The present CFD data are compared with the previous experimental results. The present computational results show that the critical mass flow rate through orifice is well predicted and it is a strong function of Reynolds number. The discharge coefficient increases with the orifice diameter.

Particle Laden Flows Around Orifice Plates for Pressure Control in Pulverized Coal Pipe Lines (분체 이송관내 압력 조절을 위한 오리피스 주위에서의 입자 유동 및 마모 해석)

  • A numerical study is performed to investigate pressure drops, particle trajectories and erosion around orifice plates in pulverized coal pipe lines. Particle impaction rates change significantly with orifice shapes and Stokes numbers. At Reynolds number of $5{\times}10^5$, the pulverized coal flows well with streamlines and do not collide at the orifice plates at small sizes (${\sim}20{\mu}m$). However, the large particles (over $70{\mu}m$) impact on the front face of the orifice and erode the orifice surface. The pressure loss coefficients around the erode orifice are largely different from the designed original orifice.

Atomization Characteristics of the High Speed Rotating Injection System with Single Column Orifice (단열식 오리피스를 적용한 고속회전 분무노즐의 미립화 특성)

  • The spray characteristics of the high speed rotating fuel injection system were studied. The five variants of rotating fuel nozzle were used by spray test. The diameter of single column injection orifices are varied from 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm. We constructed high speed rotating test rig and measured droplet size by PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) system. Also spray was visualized by using high speed camera. In the test results, we could understand that length of liquid column from the injection orifice is mainly controlled by the rotational speeds. SMD is decreased with increasing injection orifice diameter and rotational speeds. Furthermore, from the comparison to the theoritical calculation, we confirmed that SMD is influenced by the liquid film thickness which is formed inner surface of injection orifice.

  • Generally, the flow hunting is observed in almost all of the orifice meters but the intensity of the flow hunting is different at each metering system. So, we were getting some Questions as follows; why such a difference occurs and whether it influence to metering error rate or not. To investigate the flow hunting characteristics, we are trying to examine the flow characteristics around the orifice meter when the transient flow or pressure is generated at after the PCV(Pressure Control Valve) by 3D CFD method. And we have compared numerical results with experimental results at M - PCV station in order to clarify the relations with both the metering-pipeline diameter and flow rate. Finally, we can show some major factors influencing to the flow hunting and propose some correcting scheme of the flow hunting equation.

  • A type of electric propulsion employed by specialized purpose vessels or offshore is the azimuth thruster. Azimuth thruster application had been increasing recently and resulted to excellent vessel maneuverability. However, this system is very complex and some of its major component being exposed under the seawater level presents difficulty in sealing design. For Polar class icebreaker operating in extreme sea condition, this requires a high level of reliability and safety. In this study, the characteristics of lubricating orifice pipe structural vibration installed at the lower reduction gear were investigated and analyzed through beam analysis theory and comparison of experiments. Propeller excitation and the resonant modes of vibration causing excessive vibration and suitable countermeasures to prevent damage due to vibration fatigue on the pipe are presented.

  • This paper presents the performance improvement of a Nozzle/Ball type servovalve with variant drain orifice. First of all, the configuration of the novel servovalve is proposed. Then, the static characteristics are investigated under blocked load condition, and its dynamic characteristics are analyzed by using the linearized flow-pressure relationship. Finally, the performance at the null condition of the proposed servovalve is numerically evaluated through the comparison study with the convention at counterparts.

  • The effects of fuel density and fuel viscosity on spray characteristics were investigated under two different gas turbine fuels and various fuel supply pressure conditions through measurement of SMD, number density and volume flux by using PDPA system in dual orifice injector for gas turbine engines. In this study, we found out that the droplet size and spray structure are strongly depend on fuel density for dual orifice injector. The spray characteristics of high density fuel in dual orifice injector are similar with the characteristics of low density fuel in single orifice injector. The shear region between primary main fuel stream and secondary main fuel stream is examined in low density fuel condition but not exist in high density fuel condition, then this shear region is very important in quality of gas turbine spray. There are worth consideration for the effect of fuel density on spray characteristics in frontal device design to improve combustion efficiency.

  • The constant flow control valve is used to control the flow rate of heating water in the large apartment complex and buildings. It is important to have similar heating flow rate in the apartments, even though the apartment is top or bottom floors. To achieve those purposes, the constant flow control valve was developed. The performance of this control valve is effected by hole area and discharge coefficients of the cartridge holes. The discharge coefficients of orifice hole in the cartridge were testes with various sizes of holes and various flow direction in the holes. The discharge coefficients decreased as the hole size increased due to the collision at the cartridge wall of water jet. The effects of the flow direction at the hole were not significant on the discharge coefficients.

A Study on the Optimal Orifice Location for Air flow Measurement in an Air Duct Leakage Tester (덕트누기시험기용 풍량측정 오리피스의 최적위치 선정에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, five experiments were carried out, with an orifice located downstream of a fan in case I where upstream duct length is 6 D, and that in the downstream is 4 D and different downstream distance to the fan in the rest, so as to determine the optimal location of the orifice and reduce the duct length of airflow measurement device. The resulting flow rate-pressure drop correlations were found to satisfy the limitation of SMACNA standard, which specified an error of $\pm7.5\%$ based on the real flow rate. Also, the best one of five. cases was achieved with the orifice located midway of the orifice duct four times its diameter long.

MMS-RTC코드를 이용한 영광 5,6호기 유출계통의 과도현상 해석

  • 영광 5,6호기 유출계통의 과도현상을 평가하기 위해서 Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)에서 개발한 발전소 과도해석용 코드인 Modular Modeling System-Real Time Capable (MMS-RTC) 코드를 이용하여 유출계통의 모델을 구성하였다. 구성된 모델을 이용하여 수력학적 현상을 모사하고 배압제어벨브 제어기의 제어변수 및 유출 오리피스 차단벨브의 Stroke Time 등의 운전특성을 고려하여 수력학적 현상을 분석하였다. 분석결과 배압제어벨브 제어기 제어변수의 적절한 선정이 계통의 과도현상 완화에 매우 중요한 인자임을 알 수 있었고, 유출 오리피스차단벨브의 Stroke Time의 변화가 유출계통의 과도현상에 상당한 영향을 미치고 있음을 알았다. 결과적으로 유출계통의 과도상태를 적절하게 제어하기 위해서는 벨브의 특성, 벨브의 Stroke Time 및 배압제어밸브 제어기 제어변수들이 적절히 선정하여야 한다고 판단된다.
