  • This study was carried out to find out the elution characteristics of 4 kinds of sludges and a dust by the variation of pH. Four kinds of sludges were obtained from the Industrial wastes, and the dust, from the iron-and-steel waste. These samples were analyzed by "Official Method for Waste", and the results were summarized as follows. 1. The amounts of heavy metals The concentrations of Cu were 1,940

  • With the purpose of energy recovery from sludge having calorific value as fuel we investigated the current status and characteristics of sludge in Korea in order to understand the type and amount of sludge that can recover energy. 'The Status Report on Waste Generation and Treatment in Korea' announced that 152 million tons of wastes were generated nationwide in 2015 and 9.2 % of the whole waste disposed into landfills which includes 15.1 % of the total industrial wastes. The average of upper calorific values of sewage sludge was 3,021 kcal/kg and that of wastewater sludge was 2,472 kcal/kg respectively. In order to determine the sludge as fuel, each correlations between calorific value, carbon content and combustibility ratio were evaluated. In the study, the current status and characteristics of sludge in Korea were investigated in order to understand the type and amount of sludge as fuel to recover energy. It is predicted that if the energy of sludge having a calorific value of 6 MJ/kg($${\sim_=}1,500kcal/kg$$) or more is recovered as fuel, the amount of the sludge disposed into landfills can be reduced about 40 %.

  • Generation and recycling potential of organic waste in Korea were estimated. Status of organic waste composting and compost utilization also were surveyed to promote the recycling of organic waste. From 1994 to 1997, generation of garbage decreased gradually while recycling rate increased due to positive governmental strategy. During the same period, livestock waste increased 11.2%. Municipal wastewater sludge was generated 3,500 ton/day which was 0.03% of wastewater treated in 1996. The energy Potential of industrial organic waste was estimated to 288 million TOE which was 1.75% of the nationwide first energy consumption in 1996. Recycling of industrial sludge was low to 31%, while recycling of animal waste, plant scraps, and wasted paper were relatively high over 50%. Industrial sludge should be recycled more as it was the most part of industrial organic waste. Conventional composting materials were mainly livestock waste, food processing waste, fishery waste, sawdust, and nightsoil. Garbage and sludge have been composted recently. 420,000 tons of compost in 1996 were produced by 288 makers, the most of which were utilized in agriculture. It was suggested that separated collection, compost standard, and quality management should be provided to promote the composting of organic waste.

  • Depletion of natural resources and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are an important issue which we have to solve. The recycling of waste has emerged as a global concern. In Korea, the development of cost-effective treatment and recycling technologies also need to be improved. In this study, we compared and analyzed the cost per unit of treatment and recycling of organic waste, and presented an effective recycling scheme. We investigated the current status of treatment and costs for six types of organic wastes from 80 workplaces, including organic wastewater treatment sludge, processed organic sludge, and plant residues. In addition, environmental costs for greenhouse gas reduction were calculated. It's an economic way that organic waste is composted and used as cement additives. In particular, the economic analysis was done by realistic results of the survey target companies. In conclusion, in order for reliable processing and recycling of organic wastes, wastewater treatment sludge and sewage sludge need to be classified based on hazard characteristics. Finally, technical difficulties need to be further resolved such as odors, leachate, and debris on recycling organic wastes.

  • In the analysis of the common categories, moisture contents and organic concentrations were not much different according to the types of industry or treatment facilities. When heavy metals contribution of the sludge from domestic and industrial wastewater treatment facilities was analyzed, As, Hg and Cr concentrations were relatively high among 42 standards of the fertilizer law. As concentration war higher in 28 of 42 facilities (67%) than limits of the fertilizer law. Hg concentration was not acceptable in the 21 of 42 facilities (50%). Cr concentration was not acceptable in 9 of 42 facilities (21%). From these results, It is found that As is the most frequently detectable component and contaminant than any other heavy metals in sludges. The data from this experiment was also compared with the guidelines of harmful organics and the rest of heavy metals that are regulated by some of the foreign countries. Be, Se and Mo concentrations were lower than the limits. Among the organics, the average concentration of PCB (10 samples) was 26.2 ppb. The highest concentration was 162.6 ppb in the sludge of the municipal wastewater treatment facilities and the lowest concentration was 2.14 ppb from the skin manufacturing industry. From the leaching analysis of re-manufacturing goods from the sludge, most of them was acceptable on the regulation law but Cr concentration was over the limit.
