A vast amount of materials-such as prints, woodblock prints, manuscripts, old novels, and letters-written in old Korean and using old grammar and/or obsolete characters, are collected in many institutions, including the Jangseogak at the Academy of Korean Studies. Digitization of these texts has required a prolonged manual inputting process. Individual researchers, who majored in old Korean, have read and typed the characters into electronic documents, which depends upon individual skill, effort, and approach, and is particularly limiting because none can be significantly increased. To date, only a small proportion of the old Korean document collections, currently kept in storage, have been digitized and made available to the public. Even the electronic formats of the texts prove difficult to displaying correctly, due to the incompatibility between the old Korean characters and the character set on today's electronic devices. To improve the techniques and efficiency of digitizing old Korean texts, it is necessary to develop optical character recognition (OCR), which will analyze images of old Korean documents, as well as input, display, and storage methods.

국제 표준화 기구 (ISO) 에서 1992 년 ISO 10646-1 을 확정하였다. ISO 10646-1에 들어 있는 국제 표준 한글 부호계에는 현재까지 발견된 옛한글 글자가 모두 들어 있다. 이전에는 옛한글에 대한 표준 부호계가 없어서 옛한글 자료에 대한 전산화에 큰 걸림돌이 되었으나, 국제 표준 한글 부호계의 등장으로 이러한 문제가 해결되었다고 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 국제 표준 한글 부호계를 유닉스의 X-window 환경에서 지원하는 방안에 대해 살펴보고, 국제 표준 한글 부효계를 지원하는 관계형 데이터베이스 한글 사용자 질의 환경을 개발하므로써, 지원 방안의 실증과 함께 옛한글 자료를 데이터베이스화하기 위한 바탕을 마련하였다.

국제 표준화 기구 (ISO) 에서는 1992년에 국제 표준 글자 부호계 ISO 10646을 확정하였는데, 거기에 들어 있는 국제 표준 한글 부호계는 새로운 조합형과 완성형 두 가지로 이루어져 있으며, 새로운 조합형은 옛한글까지 완벽하게 지원할 수 있다. 그러나 아직까지 이 새로운 조합형의 실용성에 대한 실증적인 연구가 없었다. 본 논문에서는, 새로운 조합형 한글 부호계를 지원하는 옛 한글 문서 편집기 개발 과정을 살펴보고, 또한 편집기 개발을 통하여 확인한 다음 두 가지 점에 대해서도 살펴보겠다. 첫째, 새로운 조합형을 써서 한글 정보 처리를 하는 데 아무 문제가 없으며, 둘째, 새로운 조합형으로 옛 한글을 지원할 수 있다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 옛 한글 문서 편집기의 성공적인 개발로, 이 때까지 어려움을 겪었던 옛 한글 자료의 전산화가 가능하게 되어, 우리의 고전에 대한 연구가 활발해질 것으로 예상한다.

한글 입력 방식은 글쇠배열과 더불어 추가적인 낱자들을 입력하기 위한 결합 규칙이라는 형태로 정의할 수 있다. 그런데 이 규칙을 토대로 입력 방식을 실제로 구현해 보면 겹낱자를 결합하거나 음절이 바뀌는 과정에서 모호성 같은 문제가 발생할 수 있다. 초성과 종성을 문맥에 따라 구분해야 하는 두벌식, 모바일 환경처럼 매우 적은 글쇠, 수십 종류의 낱자들을 조합해야 하는 옛한글이라는 조건이 더해지면 입력 방식을 기술하고 분석하는 난이도가 더욱 높아진다. 본 논문에서는 한글 낱자의 결합 규칙을 대결합과 소결합으로 구분해서 기술하는 체계를 제안하며, 이를 토대로 입력 방식의 예상 동작을 분석해 주는 프로그램을 소개하였다. 그리고 모바일용 삼성 천지인과 KT 나랏글 한글 입력 방식을 동일 프로그램으로 기술하고 분석한 결과를 제시하였다.

In Unicode, two types of Hangul encoding schemes are currently in use, namely, the "precomposed modern Hangul syllables" model and the "conjoining Hangul characters" model. The current Unicode Hangul conjoining rules allow a precomposed Hangul syllable to be a member of a syllable which includes conjoining Hangul characters; this has resulted in a number of different Hangul encoding implementations. This unfortunate problem stems from an incomplete understanding of the Hangul writing system when the normalization and encoding schemes were originally designed. In particular, the extended use of old Hangul was not taken into consideration. As a result, there are different ways to represent Hangul syllables, and this cause problem in the processing of Hangul text, for instance in searching, comparison and sorting functions. In this paper, we discuss the problems with the normalization of current Hangul encodings, and suggest a single efficient rule to correctly process the Hangul encoding in Unicode.

Hangul text normalization in current Unicode makes wrong Hangul syllable problems when using with precomposed modern Hangul syllables and composing old Hangul by using conjoining-Hangul Jamo and compatibility Hangul Jamo. This problem comes from allowing incorrect normalization form of compatibility Hangul Jamo and Hangul Symbol and also permitting to use conjoining-Hangul Jamo mixture with precomposed Hangul syllable in Unicode Hangul composing rule. It is caused by lack of consideration of old Hangul and/or insufficient understanding of Hangul code processing when writing specification for normalization forms in Unicode. Therefore on this paper, we study Hangul code in Unicode environment, specifically problems of normalization used for Web and XML, IDN in nowadays. Also we propose modification of Hangul normalization methods and Hangul composing rules for correct processing of Hangul normalization in Unicode.

본 한글꼴은 음절 및 음소의 가시성을 높이고자 한글 음소의 이중 가로선형 배열을 통한 밀도 분산형 한글꼴과 음소 나열형 한글꼴 등의 새로운 한글꼴의 다양한 표현의 실험 연구이다. 일도 분산형 한글꼴은 새로운 음소형 한글코드(닿소리, 홑소리, 받침 조합형)와 서로 대응하드록 일원화 한글꼴로 한글 및 옛 한글의 음소 조합형의 입.출력이 가능하다. 이러한 시도는 1바이트 이내에서 현대한글 및 옛한글을 구현하며, 이는 한글의 구현원리에 따른 음소형 코드체계의 실현 가능성으로 한글 코드체계의 최적화에 대한 새로운 가설을 제시 한다.

현재 유니코드에서 한글텍스트의 정규화 기법은 완성형 현대한글 음절과 옛 한글을 표현하는 조합형 한글 그리고 호환 자모등과 같이 사용할 경우 원래의 글자와는 전혀 다른 글자의 조합을 만들어내는 문제점이 있다. 이러한 문제점은 호환 한글 자모 및 기호들의 잘못된 정규화 변환과 유니코드의 한글자모 조합 규칙에서 자모와 완성형 현대한글 음절을 다시 조합하여 한글음절로 사용 할 수 있게 허용한 때문이다. 이는 정규화 형식을 처음 작성할 당시 옛 한글의 사용을 고려하지 않았거나, 한글에 대한 올바른 이해가 부족한 상태에서 작성 된데 따른 결과라 하겠다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 유니코드 환경에서의 한글코드와 특히 최근 들어 Web을 비롯하여 XML과 IDN에서 필연적으로 사용하는 정규화에 따른 문제점을 파악하고 이들을 올바르게 처리하기 위한 정규화의 수정 방안과 조합형 한글의 조합규칙에 대한 수정 방안을 제안한다.

최근 윤형두 범우사 대표가 '옛책의 한글판본'을 펴냈다. 윤형두 대표는 머리글에서 "한글은 우리민족의 가장 소중한 문화유산이다. 이제 우리는 더욱 한글을 아끼고 갈고 닦지 않으면 녹슬고 곰피어 우리의 혼이 빼앗기고 말 것이다. 한글사랑은 곧 나라사랑이다. 이런 생각으로 옛책의 한글본을 엮어보았다"라고 말했다. 이 책은 훈미정음을 시작으로 경신록언석까지 36종의 옛책을 소개하고 있다. 본지에서는 2회에 걸쳐 소개한다.
