  • Flame stabilization characteristics of premixed flames in an annular coaxial 5-tubes burner (AC5TB) were investigated experimentally. The AC5TB was made of five quartz tubes, and the flame stabilization conditions in that burner were investigated with the variation of equivalence ratio and the flow velocities. Flame behaviors inside of narrow annular tubes could be observed directly. Overall flame stabilization conditions were similar to that of the previous study, while the flame behaviors and structures were different mainly due to the controlled uniform distribution of the velocities in channels. Flame flashback conditions were thought to be governed by the competition between heat release rate, heat loss and heat recirculation in each channel. Stationary flames at a fixed location were compared in its velocity distribution and burned gas temperature across the channel. This AC5TB can be a basic configuration for the development of flame stabilization model of porous media combustors, and it will help understand about the real behavior of flames in meso-scale combustion spaces.

  • An experimental study of the flame response in a turbulent premixed combustor has been conducted in order to investigate mechanisms for combustion instabilities in lean premixed gas turbine combustor. A lab-scale combustor and mixing section system were fabricated to measure the flame transfer function. Measurements are made of the velocity fluctuation in the nozzle using hot wire anemometry and of the heat release fluctuation in the combustor using chemiluminescence emission. The results are analyzed to determine the phase and gain of the flame transfer function as a function of the modulation frequency and operating conditions.

  • The structure of premixed turbulent flames in constant volume vessel was investigated by using a laser tomography. The flame structure was visualized by passing a laser sheet with 0.2mm thick and 2 cm wide through the turbulent flames to obtain their 2-D images. From the obtained images islands of reactants as well as of products were found at least in the 2-D images when the turbu-lence intensity was above 0.4m/s. Moreover in order to obtain the characteristic flamelet thickness the light intensities of them were digitized and processed into three colors incorporating two appro-priate threshold values in the image analysis. As the result the averaged value of charactertistic flamelet thickness was found to be about two times compared to laminar one.

  • The lift-off characteristics of lifted laminar propane jet flames highly diluted with nitrogen are investigated introducing acoustic forcing with a fuel tube resonance frequency. A flame stability curve is obtained according to forcing strength and the nozzle exit velocity for N2 diluted flames. Flame lift-off behavior is globally classified into three regimes; 1) a weakly varying partially premixed behavior caused by a collapsible mixing for large forcing strength, 2) a coexistent behavior of the edge flame and a weakly varying partially premixed behavior for moderate forcing strength, and 3) edge flame or triple flame behavior for small forcing. It is shown that the laminar lifted flame with forcing affects flame lift-off behavior considerably, and is also clarified that the flame characteristic of flame base is well described with the penetration depth of the degree of mixing, ${\gamma}$$\_$$\delta$/. It is also confirmed that the weakly varying partially premixed flame caused by a collapsible mixing fur large forcing strength behaves as that just near flame blow-out in turbulent lift-off flame.

  • The flow field, fuel-air mixing, and behaviors of turbulent flames have been investigated using the large eddy simulation (LES) numerical technique in a premixed swirl combustor equipped with EV double cone burners. Recirculation zones are generated by the swirl burner, and lean premixed flames are formed within a distance of 0.2 m from the tip of the burner. NOx emission of 0.46 ppm is predicted at 1 atm and an air/fuel ratio of 38.7. However, most of the CO generated in a flame front continues to be oxidized as it moves toward the exit, and CO emission of 5.45 ppm is predicted at the exit. The NOx emission can be reduced by decreasing the pressure and air/fuel ratio. The characteristics of NOx emission have been investigated through RANS simulations for various fuel injection types, and it is found thereby that five-lance-hole injection produces the lowest NOx emission rate.

  • In the paper we investigate characteristics of a transitional behavior from a premixed flame to a triple flame in a lifted flame according to the change of equivalence ratio. In previous study, we showed that the stabilized laminar lifted flame regime is categorized by regimes of premixed flame, triple flame and critical flame. A gas-chromatograph is used to measure concentration field, a smoke-wire system is used to measure streak line, and a PIV system is used to measure velocity field in lifted flame. In the visualization experiment of smoke wire, the flow divergence and redirection reappeared in premixed flame as well as triple flame. Thus we cannot express the flame front of lifted flame has a behavior of triple flame with only flow divergence and redirection. In PIV measurement, flow velocity for those three flames has minimum value at the tip of flame front. To differentiate triple flame and premixed flame, $\Phi$ value of partially premixed fraction is employed. The partially premixed fraction $\Phi$ was constant in premixed flame. In critical flame small gradient appears over the whole regime. In triple flame, typical diffusion flame shape is obtained as parabolic distribution type due to diffusion flame trailing.

  • To evaluate the combustion mechanism of each droplet cluster downstream of the premixed spray flame, the simultaneous time-series measurements were conducted by using optical measurement system consisting of laser tomography, multi-color integrated Cassegrain receiving optics (MICRO) and phase Doppler anemometer (PDA). Furthermore, the group combustion number of droplet cluster was estimated experimentally, and the combustion mechanism of droplet cluster was examined applying the theoretical analysis. The group combustion number, $G_c$, was experimentally estimated about all droplet cluster verified by planar images, and it was classified into the internal group combustion mode and the external group combustion mode according to the theoretical analysis. It is found that there are cases in which the group combustion number estimated experimentally for droplet cluster agree or disagree with the classification by theoretical analysis. The reason of disagreement is considered due to that the group combustion number was only estimated by the geometrical arrangement of droplets in cluster, and that the actual phenomenon is three-dimensional but the measurement system is two-dimensional.

  • In a turbulent premixed flame stabilized by the streamline step, and dominated by a coherent eddy, a flame micro-structure was investigated with analyzing the signals of temperature, the ion current, and schieren phtographs simultaneously. Generally the contours of large scale coherent eddies of schlieren photographs was considered as the flame front, however, the main reaction can be occurred within the eddy as a structure of fine flamelets scale. The surrounding burned gas of flamelets could not propagate to a unburned mixture, obstructing flamelets from propagating to a unburned mixture. Consequently, it could restrain flashback. The main reaction region was found to be located at higher temperature of the burned gas rather than at maximum rms of fluctuating temperature. The peak probability of higher temperature was 6 times greater than that of lower temperature. As it was difficult to infer a flame structure from PDF distribution of the fluctuating temperature in form of bimodal shape, it should be taken into consideration with other informations related to the sensitive flame front, for instance, ion current.

  • The prediction performance of 9 model sets, which combine 3 turbulent models and 3 combustion models, was investigated numerically for turbulent partially-premixed jet flame. The standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ (SKE), Realizable ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ (RKE) and Reynolds stress model (RSM) were used as a turbulence model, and the eddy dissipation concept (EDC), steady laminar flamelet (SLF) and unsteady laminar flamelet model (ULF) were also adopted as a combustion model. The prediction performance of those 9 model sets was evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively for Sandia D flame of which flame structure was measured precisely. The flame length was predicted as, from longest to shortest, RSM > SKE > RKE, and the RKE predicted the flame length of the jet flame much shorter than experiment. The flame temperature was over predicted by the combination of RSM + SLF or RSM + ULF while the flame length obtained by RSM + SLF and RSM + ULF was well agreed with the experiment. The combination of SKE + SLF and SKE + ULF predicts well the flame length as well as the temperature distribution. The SKE turbulence model was most superior to the other turbulent models, and SKE + ULF showed the best prediction performance for the structure of turbulent partially-premixed jet flame.

  • In this study, quantitative nitric oxide concentration distributions are investigated in the post-flame zone of laminar premixed $CH_4/O_2/N_2$, flames by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). The measurements are taken in flames for different equivalence ratios varying from $0.8{\sim}1.4$, and flow rate is fixed as 5slpm. The NO A-X (0,0) vibrational band around 226 nm is excited using a XeCl excimer-pumped dye laser. Selecting an appropriate NO transition minimizes interferences from Rayleigh scattering and $O_2$ fluorescence. NO concentration is rised when equivalence ratios increase at different vertical distances form nozzle tip. In any case, the maximum NO concentration reaches the maximum in reaction zone.
