A Study on the Influence of Equivalence Ratio and Kinds of fuel in Flame Structure (화염 구조에 미치는 연료 및 당량비에 관한 연구)

  • In order to clarify the effect of equivalence ratio and kinds of fule in flame structure, a numerical simulation of triple flame developed in a co-flowing methane-air and air stream was carried out by the elementary chemical reaction mechanism. The following conclusions were obtained. Equivalence ratio at which the apparent burning velocity is maximum is a little larger than that of the one-dimensional premixed flame. Apparent burning velocities are two times higher than that of the one-dimensional premixed flame for the methane-air. The flame thrusts out forward in the downstream of the boundary between mixture and air stream, and a part of the flow is bent and forks out in this protruding flame so that a triple flame is originated; this triple flame is composed of fuel rich and lean premixed flame branches and a diffusion flame branch. Near the equivalence ratio at which the burning velocity of rule-dimensional premixed flame is the largest the effect of one-dimensional premixed flame becomes large and the fuel rich premixed flame advances and becomes vertical to the flow direction.

Effect of Injection Pressure and Injection Timing on Spray and Flame Characteristics of Spray-Guided Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition Engine under Lean Stratified Combustion Operation (성층희박연소 운전조건에서 분사시기에 따른 분무유도식 직접분사 가솔린엔진의 분무 및 화염특성)

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effects of the injection timing on the spray and combustion characteristics in a spray-guided direct-injection spark-ignition (DISI) engine under lean stratified operation. An in-cylinder pressure analysis, exhaust emissions measurement, and visualization of the spray and combustion were employed in this study. The combustion in a stratified DISI engine was found to have both lean premixed and diffusion controlled flame combustion characteristics. The injection timing condition corresponding to the stratified mixture characteristics was verified to be a dominant factor for these flame characteristics. For the early injection timing, a non-luminous blue flame and low combustion efficiency were observed as a result of the lean homogeneous mixture formation. On the other hand, a luminous sooting flame was shown at the late injection timing because of an under-mixed mixture formation. In addition, the smoke emission and incomplete combustion products were increased at the late injection timing as a result of the increased locally rich area. On the other hand, the NOx emissions decreased and IMEP increased as the injection timing retarded. The combustion phasing produced by the injection timing was verified as the reason for this observation.

A Study on Measurement of NO Concentrations in Burner Flames by LIF (레이저 유도 형광법(LIF)을 이용한 버너 화염의 NO 농도측정에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, quantitative measurement of nitric oxide concentration distributions were investigated in the laminar CH4/O2/N2 premixed flame by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). The NO A-X (0,0) vibrational band around 226nm was excited using a XeCl excimer-pumped dye laser. Selecting an appropriate NO transition minimizes interference from Rayleigh scattering and O2 fluorescence. The measurements were taken in CH4/O2/N2 premixed flame with equivalence ratios varying from $1.0{\sim}1.6$, and a fixed flowrate of 5slpm. NO was found to produce primarily between an inner premixed and an outer nonpremixed flame front, and total NO concentration is raised when equivalence ratios increase. These results suggest that prompt NO is likely to contribute to NO formation in CH4/O2/N2 premixed flame. Furthermore, this trend was well matched with previous works.

A Study on Soot Formation in Premixed Constant-Volume Combustion at High Pressures (高壓下의 定積 豫混合氣燃燒에 있어서 煤煙생成에 關한 硏究)

  • The effect of pressure on soot formation in premixed propane-air combustion is investigated at high pressures over the pressure range of 1 to 5 MPa by using a specially designed constant volume combustion bomb. The combustiom chamber of disk type with eight spark plugs located on the circumference at an interval of 45deg is 100mm in diameter by 14mm thick. The end gases are compressed to high pressures by the eight converging flames. The soot volume fraction in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the highest pressure is measured by the in-situ laser extinction technique, and the burnt gas temperature during the same period is measured by the two-color method. It is found that the soot yield rises with 50 to 100% for the respective equivalence ratio range of 1.9-2.2 at an interval of 0.1 when the combustion pressure is increased from 1 to 5 MPa, and that the turbulent flames decrease in the soot yield as compared with the laminar flames because the burnt gas temperatures increase with the drop of heat loss.

  • 왕복동 내연기관에서의 연소 및 배기가스 생성은 복잡한 3차원 영역 내에서 난류 유동, 분무, 화학반응, 열전달, 경계층 현상이 상호 연계되어 있는 매우 복합적인 과정이다. 특히 난류 연소 현상은 기관의 효율을 결정하는 연소 속도와 pollutant의 배출 농도를 결정하는 핵심 요소로서 관련 모델과 수치 해법에 대해 학술적, 공학적 측면에서 세계적으로 활발한 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 이를 위해 수행되는 다양한 실험 측정과 수치 해법을 통해 얻어지는 3차원 과도 상태의 방대한 스칼라량과 벡터량에 대한 정보를 효율적으로 처리하기 위해서는 적절한 가시화 과정이 필수적이다. 여기서는 최근 다양한 엔진 타입들에 대한 응용 사례와 함께 난류 연소 모델링을 위한 새로운 접근법으로서 조건평균법(conditional averaging)에 대해 간략히 소개하고자 한다. 난류예혼합연소에서의 난류화염속도에 대한 DNS와 영역조건평균에 기초한 예측식의 검증, 천연가스 jet의 자발화 지연기간, n-heptane jet의 자발화 진행 과정, HSDI 엔진, HCCI 엔진, CNG 엔진, LPG 분무 및 엔진, GDI 엔진 등에 대한 연구 결과들은 정보 가시화의 한 사례가 될 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

Effect of Mixing Section Resonance Mode on Dynamic Combustion Characteristics in a Swirl-Stabilized Combustor (스월-안정화 연소기에서 혼합기 공진모드가 동적 연소특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Hot-firing tests were performed to experimentally confirm the effect of the eigenmode in the fuel-air mixing section on combustion instability by changing mixing section length, inlet mean velocity, equivalence ratio, and swirler geometry. A premixed gas composed of air and ethylene was supplied to the combustion chamber through an mixing section and an axial swirler. As the mixing section length increased, the inlet velocity perturbation decreased, but the combustion instability increased more. It was found that the resonance frequency of the first longitudinal mode in the mixing section shifted to the third longitudinal mode as the length of the mixing section increased. The results implied that the transition of the resonace frquency by changing the length of the mixing section might cause combustion instability.

  • Diesel engines exhaust much more NOx(Nitrogen Oxides) and PM(Particulate Matter) than gasoline engines, and it is not easy to reduce both NOx and PM simultaneously because of the trade-off relation between two components. This study investigated flame characteristics of the partial premixed compression ignition known as new combustion method which can reduce NOx and PM simultaneously. The investigation was performed through the analysis of the flame images taken by a high speed camera from the visible engine which is the modified single cylinder diesel engine. The results obtained through this investigation are summarized as follows; (1) The area of the luminous yellow flame was reduced due to the decrease of flame temperature and even distribution of temperature. (2) The darkish yellow flame zone caused by the shortage of the remaining oxygen after the middle stage of combustion was considerably reduced. (3) Since the ignition delay was shortened, the violent combustion did not occur and the combustion duration became shortened.

  • 전산유체 해법의 내연기관 3차원 해석에 대한 최근 연구 동향에 대해 소개하였다. 난류유동 해석은 아직 정확성과 신뢰도 면에서 많은 연구가 필요하지만 현재의 상태에서도 직관, 경험, 실험 측정에 의해 파악하기 어렵거나 많은 비용과 시간이 요구되는 부분을 보완해 줄 수 있는 도구로서 인정받고 있다. 연소해석 부분은 현상 자체가 유동, 연소, 분무, 열전달등이 복합적으로 작용하는 어려운 문제로서 공학계산의 가장 첨단 분야 중의 하나라 할 수 있다. 현재 관련 모델로서 스파크 점화기관의 점화 및 화염전파, 배기가스 생성 과정과 디젤기관의 압축착화, 예혼합 및 확산 연소, 매연 등의 생성과정에 대한 모델 개발과 검증이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 일부 발표된 논문 결과들은 이와 같은 방법이 엔진의 주요 연소 특성을 재현하는데에 성공적으로 활용될 수 있음을 보여주고 있다.

Numerical Study of Evaporation and Ignition of in-line Array Liquid Droplets (액적 배열의 증발과 착화에 관한 수치해석적 연구)

  • The spreading fire of very small floating particles after they are ignited is fast and t therefore dangerous. The research on this area has been limited to experiments and global simulations which treat them as dusts or gaseous fuel with certain concentration well m mixed with air. This research attempted micro-scale analysis of ignition of those particles modeling them as liquid droplets. For the beginning, the in-line array of fuel droplets is modeled by two-dimensional, unsteady conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species transport in the gas phase and an unsteady energy equation in the liquid phase. They are solved numerically in a generalized non-orthogonal coordinate. The single step chemical reaction with reaction rate controlled by Arrhenius’ law is assumed to a assess chemical reaction numerically. The calculated results show the variation of temperature and the concentration profile with time during evaporation and ignition process. Surrounding oxygen starts to mix with evaporating fuel vapor from the droplet. When the ignition condition is met, the exothermic reactions of the premixed gas initiate a and burn intensely. The maximum temperature position gradually approaches the droplet surface and maximum temperature increases rapidly following the ignition. The fuel and oxygen concentration distributions have minimum points near the peak temperature position. Therefore the moment of ignition seems to have a premixed-flame aspect. After this very short transient period minimum points are observed in the oxygen and fuel d distributions and the diffusion flame is established. The distance between droplets is an important parameter. Starting from far-away apart, when the distance between droplets decreases, the ignition-delay time decreases meaning faster ignition. When they are close and after the ignition, the maximum temperature moves away from the center line of the in-line array. It means that the oxygen at the center line is consumed rapidly and further supply is blocked by the flame. The study helped the understanding of the ignition of d droplet array and opened the possibility of further research.
