  • This paper want to examine how Gwanghwamun and its surrounding areas work in the cinematic spaces for Korean films of the 1950s-2010s. First, in Korean films of the 1950s-1960s, Myeong-dong(Namchon), Bukchon, Seochon, and Dongchon are the primitive, perceptual, existential spaces that show the underground world and tragic pathos in the splendid city through intense desires and fatal frustration, the shadows and conflicts of modernization. Second, in Korean films of the 1970s-1990s, Myeongdong·Jongno(Namchon·Bukchon), Seochon and Dongchon are the perceptual, existential spaces that show public revenge and private alienation through the dichotomy of freedom/evil and the dichotomy of wealth/poverty. Third, in Korean films of the 2000-2010s, Gwanghwamun(Seochon), Bukchon, Namchon, and Dongchon are the perceptual, existential spaces that show civil society ethos and gloomy requiem through national agendas, resistance movements, desires and losses, miserable reality and death.

  • Narrative activities are closely related to the space where human beings live and their awareness of space. In the film Parasite (2019), Director Bong Joon-ho demonstrated his unique insights into the spatial layout of the city. He not only built opposing up and down spaces with clear differentiation of distinct classes, but also conducted complex and smooth narratives in space. Bong Joon-ho used realism to express differences and some unresolvable contradictions between the classes in capitalist society by showing the daily lives of people living in different spaces. This present research focuses on Bong Joon-ho's spatial narrative in the film Parasite, hoping to observe the relationship between characters and between social classes, further exploring Director Bong Joon-ho's spatial narrative awareness and his film creation style. The research reveals that space, an important element of film narrative, has been paid attention to in the film Parasite and space is the narrative's foundation in this film. The narrative of film space is not limited to physical space but also refers to the relationship between characters and the society in which they live, showing metaphorical significance. This film transcends a genre film, portraying the changes of social classes in the development of the society. The film as a whole is one combining ideology and artistry. Every viewer can feel resonated from this film and understand the thought-provoking social situation.

  • This study shed light on searching spatial location pattern of movie theaters by operating screens in theater as proxy variable to find spillover effects and spatial determinants. After taking procedure to find spatial spillover effect by GIS 3D analyst, movie theaters in Seoul metropolitan area are formed in four categorized regions, such as Kangbuk, Kangnam, Kangseo, and Kangdong. Regions which have larger number of screens than others show that they affect to relevant regions directly. In addition, this study analyzes that people have tendencies to visit movie theater while they use other similar facilities such as music, publishing, and public performance facilities. Therefore, trend of agglomeration of similar enterprise including motion picture industry has a spillover effect and economy of scale when they are gathered in specific regions which are specialized as certain usage.

  • One of the oldest chestnuts in economic geography is this: Cultural and creative industries strongly gather in large cities and this geographic concentration of economic activities leads to regional development. Of course, depending on the circumstances, such a proposition still holds good. But, under the current paradigm shift to knowledge-based economy, it may be open to question. This study aims to investigate financing and knowledge accumulation in the film industry through an alternative framework for explaining their spatial distributions, "formation mechanism of economic space." From the fact that their production organizations are formed on a project basis, project-based financing structure in the investment stage and knowledge accumulation process in the production stage form both axes of it. Film industry as the most mature industry among the cultural and creative industries does not always concentrate in a certain place (industrial agglomeration) or show metropolis-oriented preference. This allows us to reconsider our long brooding theory.
