  • This study analyzed the factors affecting box office performance of 200 movies released at the Chinese theater in 2015. The results showed that main actor power, online rating, production power, and Chinese film were sighificant factors which influenced box office, while the distribution power, genre, IP utilization and integration of production and distribution were insignificant. These results mean that online marketing factors such as the popularity index of the main actors evaluated on the internet and the online rating are affecting box office performances in Chinese theaters.

The results are as follows: first, there does not exist distinctive genre movie as most of the movie producers concentrate on thoughtless genre fusion of movie, simply hoping for box office success. Second, Giant companies that has large amounts of money and distributors tend to monopolize production, distribution, and running of movie. Consequently, the development of diversity and artistry is absolutely impeded. Third, the structure of Korean movie industry make some well-known movie stars survive the film world and staff members and actors except them face economic difficulty. The solution plans for the problems mentioned above can be drawn like this; first, genre film with distinctive features should be developed. Second, the monopolistic structure of the screen should be changed. Legal organizations are required to redesign the system of unfair Korean film industry. Third, it is suggested that quantitative expansion of special theaters of diversity film be urgently needed. Fourth, appearance fees given to popular movie stars, actors, and staff members have to be provided in a balanced way. Fifth, the way for revitalization of film production should be found through the legal examination of fund for film development. Last but not least, the profit from the additional film market ought to be made.

This study adopted the three categories of Litman's film success factors (creative domain, distribution domain, and marketing domain) and integrated to the cases of Korean documentary films to extract 12 success factors of documentary films through experts' validation process. Moreover, this study applied AHP method and examined the relative importance of success factors of documentary films. The result was as follows. The significant success factors mostly were found within creative domain. Documentaries that feature common themes rated the distribution/marketing factors highly whereas documentaries that cover socio-political themes rated highly the governments funding and infrastructure building. With regard to the online phenomenon of participating viewer, there was a gap in perception: the production field rated it high while the distribution/marketing field rated it relatively low. These success factors and priority will be used as baseline data in diverse fields related to documentary films, and provide significant implications to documentary film staff, policy makers, and researchers.

  • This study provides an empirical analysis of box office performance for animation movies released in Korea between 2003 and 2008. Two dependent variables are both the number of audiences in the whole country and the number of audiences in Seoul. Such independent variables are employed : power of distributors, the number of screens, release time, sequel/remake, awards, film ratings, nationality, online reviews, and critics' reviews. For the total number of audiences in the whole country, significant variables are the number of screens, the power of USA distributors, Summer release, and online reviews. Since there is no analysis for box office performance for animation movies released in Korean theaters, this study will be considered to be meaningful.

  • Interest has increased in academic research regarding key factors that drive box-office success as well as the ability to predict the box-office success of a movie from a commercial perspective. This study analyzed the relationship between key success factors of a movie and box office records based on movies released in 2010 in Korea. At the pre-production investment decision-making stage, the movie genre, motion picture rating, director power, and actor power were statistically significant. At the stage of distribution decision-making process after movie production, among other factors, the influence of star actors, number of screens, power of distributors, and social media turned out to be statistically significant. We verified movie success factors through the application of a Multinomial Logit Model that used the concept of choice probabilities. The Multinomial Logit Model resulted in a higher level of accuracy in predicting box-office success compared to the Artificial Neural Network and Discriminant Analysis.

  • This raper analyzes the effect of visually lossless image compression for efficient distribution of digital cinema. Currently, distribution of digital cinema is carried out based on JPEG 2000 standard that has been selected by DCI. We first summarize characteristics of JPEG 2000, and then define the concept of visually lossless coding that plays an important role in digital cinema distribution. We provide a test for JPEG 2000 compression performance according to DCI specification for visually lossless. Based on the experiment, the result satisfies high quality for cinema distribution.

  • The purpose of this research is to identify the different determinants according to the types of motion pictures; art film and commercial film. We found that the regression equations of two types of motions pictures are structurally different. More specifically, we identified that the number of screens, viewers' evaluation, and genres have a significant relationship with the performance of motion pictures both in the commercial and art film. However, director, ratings, critics, power of agency, nationality, and the timing of release affect the performance of motion pictures just on the art films.

  • Digital cinema industry in Korea is developing very fast. It makes the structure of Korea film industry being changed with outstanding D.I process, reduction of production cost, the convenience of distribution & screening and easy transferring to other platforms. The main reason of this fast development is due to Korea film industry monopoly structure by a few companies. In addition, Huge Korea mobile communication companies are pushing Digital cinema industry to go faster with their own net work and platforms. However, Korea digital cinema industry still has problems like standardization in releasing, the lake of data in post-production and overuse in production. It is the time that we have to think about best way for the healthy development of Korea digital cinema industry more than the fast development of it.
