  • The information and knowledge of modern society in the 2lst century is changing rapidly. Based on this social change, the ministry of education introduced STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Music) in 2011 to foster creative convergence talents. Therefore, this study is based on the PBL model that learners participate in the class voluntarily to develop appropriate talents in the 21st century. The combined subjects were English, which is the world's official language, and Science, which is found in almost all the fields with the development of the 4th industrial revolution. As a result, learners could define the problems and solutions during the English class and take part in the group activity actively to obtain the problems and solutions of environmental pollution during the Science class. Through this, learners answered that they had a great understanding of learning (86%), high motivation for learning (100%), improved self-confidence (100%), and improved collaboration and creativity (100%). Unfortunately, this study does not progress actively due to the entrance exams, which still require accurate answers rather than the necessity and effectiveness of convergence education. To foster talents suitable for the present age, more active research should be applied to a range of educational sites.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of mobile phone use on university students' English reading achievement and consider the value and effectiveness of mobile phones as a learning tool. The study's subjects were students from a university in Seoul, who were divided into an experimental group (n=37) and a control group (n=43). The experimental group used various mobile phone functions-such as searching, recording, taking photos, using mobile apps, and community uploads-in reading class. The control group, on the other hand, focused on students' presentations and the professor's explanations. Two achievement tests and an open-ended questionnaire were administered. The results revealed that the experimental group scored higher than the control group, which showed a significant difference. In addition, the positive impacts of mobile phone use as reported in the questionnaire were interest and motivation, self-directed learning, and continuous learning beyond time and space. In order to foster efficient second language teaching and learning, learners and also teachers must be aware of the potential value of mobile phones as a learning tool. To encourage more active mobile phone use in the classroom, diverse and interesting class activities using mobile phones should be developed.

  • To provide a set of data with which instructors may boost the sagging demand for Anglo-American poetry classes, this thesis classifies the kinds of difficulties the students face in reading English poems. Asses to the classification is an analysis on the causes of the difficulties at different levels of the reading process, from the linguistic to the cultural. Arnoldian insight argues that poetry is the best of all forms of writing. Without an ample exposure to poetry, average English majors would barely sharpen the skills that they use to deal with other kinds of writing. To help ease the continuing need for a workable teaching model in English poetry reading classes, this thesis suggests focusing on the kinds of wrong translations produced by the students. According to the theory of cultural translation, any translation, even the wrong kind, is already a product of a very complicated process of interpretation that involves many cultural factors. With the analysis of these factors discovered in Korean college English reading classes, this thesis tries to explain the mechanisms through which wrong translations are produced, since these inevitably lead to wrong interpretations of given poetic texts.

  • This study investigates the interactivity of smart LMS. To this end, smart LMS was used for one semester in the English course for economics majors and the surveys about its interactivity were conducted. The findings show that smart LMS enhanced the interaction between instructors and students, between students and students, and between students and learning contents. Especially in the classroom, the activity bulletin made possible the instructor's immediate feedback about team-based activity outcomes. Also, outside the classroom, Wiki made it convenient for students to collaborate with each other. In addition, activity outcomes in the activity bulletin and course materials uploaded on smart LMS contributed to the interactivity. However, what is recommended to do to increase the interactivity are to prepare instructional strategies for students to get used to using smart LMS and smartphones as their learning tool, to test the target systems of smart LMS in advance, and to take proper actions to solve the problems of smartphone's data and battery.

  • This study was intended to help improve assessment in college EFL classes by examining the relationship between formative assessment (FA) and summative assessment (SA). Participants for the study were 75 undergraduates, taking an eight-week optional college English course at a four-year college in China. FA data were collected in the final course of the course by a self-reporting survey using the online training platform Mosoteach. To achieve the finding, the relationship between FA scores and SA scores (final exam and performance scores) was analyzed in SPSS by means of Pearson correlation analyses. Significant positive correlations were found between FA and SA scores overall. In addition, students' performance on chapter tests, online discussions, brainstorming, quick-responses, assignments and the number of thumbs-up clicks by teachers were significantly correlated with SA scores. The results suggested that FA administered through the Mosoteach app could improve students' academic performance, thus providing an empirical basis for improving educational assessment. Based on these findings, implications for assessment in EFL classes were described.

  • Project-based learning (PBL) encourages self-autonomy and connects learning and real-life skills in the learning process. The purpose of the current study is to investigate students' life skills and self-regulated learning strategies in a PBL curriculum in order to examine how the proposed benefits of PBL are manifested in students' self-awareness of their learning process. Twenty-three students in a university in Korea participated in a 3-credit, 4-week, intensive PBL course for English majors. During the PBL course, students were asked to self-assess their life skills related to time management, cooperation, standard of work, and participation three times. In addition to the self-assessment, students kept reflection journals to keep track of their use of self-regulated learning strategies and progress which were also submitted three times. Based on the analysis of self-assessment and self-reflection, the results showed that students' perception of cooperation improved significantly during PBL. Furthermore, it was found that students also progressed through the three phases of self-regulated learning. Implications on suggesting on the use of PBL to encourage the development of life skills and self-regulated learning strategies are provided.

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of literary texts as a teaching tool to enhance college students' English communicative competence both in linguistic aspects and affective ones. The control group used only the course book as study material, whereas the target group read four short stories along with it and engaged in a series of follow-up tasks. To measure their English competence, the researcher had both groups take a pre-test and a post-test, compared the results, and analyzed the data using SPSS. The study indicates that though the target students' post-test scores increased, the result failed in reaching a significant level. Nevertheless, reading and discussing literature facilitated the target students' affective aspects of communication. This article points out some other limitations of utilizing literary texts in language teaching and suggests the need for further research to deal with the issues.
