Given that American English and British English show differences for several vowels and that Korean students have mainly been exposed to American English, this study examined 27 Korean university students' identification of American and British English vowels. The results showed that Korean students' identification accuracy of American English vowels was higher (64.7%) than that of British English (54.7%), thus indicating that Korean students' familiarity with American English affected the students' identification of English vowels. However, vowel variation also affected students' identification of English vowels in that only the American English vowels in the words beat, bat, but, burt, bart, bite were better identified than the corresponding vowels in British English. Among the vowels which exhibit differences between American English and British English, the students' identification accuracy of the American English vowels in burt, bart, bat was significantly higher than that of British English and the error patterns for these vowels were also different. The analysis of vowel error patterns indicated that Korean students had much difficulty with non-rhotic vowels and [a] in bat in British English. Further, the vowels in bot and boat demonstrated a similar [ɑ]-[ɔ]-[ʌ] confusion and also a confusion between rounded vowels in spite of the differences of these vowels between American English and British English. Some pedagogical implications for teaching of English vowels were discussed based on the findings of the present study.

해기사의 해사영어 사용에 대한 체계적 교육의 필요성이 증가되는 가운데, 국제해사기구(IMO)는 이에 발맞추어 해사영어모델코스 3.17을 일반해사영어(General Maritime English, 즉 GME)와 특수해사영어(Specialized Maritime English, 즉 SME)로 나누어 재편하고, STCW에서 요구하는 지식, 이해 및 기술사항들을 영어교육의 다양한 요소들과 접합함으로써, 해사영어교육의 새로운 틀을 만들고자 시도하고 있다. 국내 해기교육 관련대학 및 기관이 향후 해사영어 커리큘럼을 재편성하기 위해서는, 개정될 해사영어모델코스의 주요 내용을 이해하고, 이를 국내 실정에 맞게 적용할 수 있도록 다양한 방안을 모색하는 것이 선행되어야 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는, 국제해사기구가 제시한 해사영어모델코스 3.17의 개정 목적 및 변화된 해사영어모델코스의 틀과 방향을 살펴보고, 향후 국내교육기관에서의 해사영어교육 커리큘럼을 재편성한 후, 성공적인 언어교육서비스 제공을 하기 위해 고려해야 할 현실적인 제한 요소들을 살펴보고, 이에 대한 해결책을 모색하고자 한다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate ways to improve the effect of English-medium instruction (EMI) in Korean universities by comparing EMI lectures in two Korean universities with those in a Japanese university. Some universities run all courses in English while others do so for only part of them. This study comparatively investigated how EMI courses were run by these two groups of universities. For the purpose of this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with EMI instructors and students to find out what merits and problems that such EMI programs had in EFL environment of Korea and Japan. Another important goal was to correct problems and improve the Korean programs. The result showed that the most important issue of EMI programs in Korean universities was students' low English proficiency. It also demonstrated that English for Academic Purposes (EAP) was necessary to overcome this problem. It is a key to the success of MI programs. Hopefully, this study will stimulate continuous discussions on limitations and ways to improve EMI in Korean universities in various aspects.

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between variables affecting learning effect and flow experience on an e-Learning English program. There are 4 independent variables; English thinking structure, self-efficacy in English and flow. The results are as follows: Firstly, there is statistically significant positive correlation between each variable of English thinking structure, pre English skill, self-efficacy in English, flow and learning effect. Secondly, it appeared that flow was affected by all three variables of English thinking structure, pre-English skill and self-efficacy in English. Also flow experience affected learning improvement. Finally, it is verified that there is a mediating effect of flow experience on the relation of self-efficacy in English and learning effect.

다양한 국적의 선박 운항자와 영어라는 공용어를 매개로 교신해야 하는 해상교통관제사에게 영어구술능력은 필수라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 영어교신분석을 통하여 영어구술능력 인증의 필요성에 대해 살펴보고 항공관제연구사례와 해상교통관제사 대상 설문조사를 통하여 영어구술능력 인증을 위한 영어구술능력시험 도입으로 인해 발생할 부작용에 대해 알아본 후 이를 최소화 할 수 있는 방안에 대해 제시함을 목적으로 한다.

English stress plays such a critical role in understanding spoken English words that its misplacement can lead to a breakdown of communication. Korean learners of English, whose native language is known to lack this feature, are expected to have some difficulty acquiring this English prosodic system. This study explored how Korean is different from English in manifesting prominence at the word level and how the interlanguage of Korean learners of English is dissimilar to both languages in that regard. Four polysyllabic English loanwords in Korean and their English source words were used as stimuli. Ten native English speakers read the English source words while ten Korean learners of English read the English loan words first and then the English source words. The analysis of 120 speech samples revealed that Korean words did not have any salient syllable realized by all stress features: duration, amplitude, and F0. On the contrary, English words had syllables with relative prominence, which was consistently manifested by all the features. Interestingly, in realizing English stress, the interlanguage of the Korean English learners bore more resemblance to that of English than that of their native language.

2003년 ICAO가 국제 조종사에 관한 언어능력 기준을 제시한 이래로 국제노선에 취항하는 한국 항공 종사자들은 영어 능력을 증명하기 위한 노력을 해왔다. 1969년 처음으로 항공영어교육이 시작되고 2006년 처음 시험이 도입되면서 한국은 이를 충족하기 위한 알맞은 영어 교육 프로그램을 시행하려 시도해 왔다. 그러나, 항공영어 교육과 시험에 관련된 문제점들이 꾸준히 제기되었고 특히 항공 종사자들의 필요와 요구에 맞지 않는 시험 제도와 내용에 대한 논쟁이 끊이지 않았다. 본 연구는 이러한 측면에서 항공영어와 교육에 대한 이론적 접근과 더불어, 106명의 항공종사자에게 실시한 설문지를 토대로 그들의 항공영어와 일반영어에 관한 의견, 항공영어시험에 관한 의견을 수집 분석하였다. 조사결과, 참여자들은 현재 실시되고 있는 항공영어시험이 실제 업무를 효과적으로 반영하지 않으며, 좀 더 실제적인 내용이 시험에 반영되기를 희망하였다. 즉, 항공영어 시험이 좀 더 업무에 사용되는 영어를 많이 반영하고 난이도를 고려한 새로운 형태의 시험이 개발 되어야 한다는 의견이 많았다. 또한, 설문지를 통하여 나타난 여러 사항들을 바탕으로 향후 항공영어 평가가 나아갈 방향을 항공종사자의 측면과 관련 교육기관과 시험출제자, 관련 당국 등 3 가지 분야로 나누어 논의 하였다.

The study aimed to investigate what difficulties and needs North Korean refugee college students have in their college English programs and what they experience over an English tutoring program offered by pre-service English teachers. Before the tutoring started, a survey was conducted to examine the current difficulties and needs 100 NK refugee college students had. After the survey, six NK refugee college students and 12 pre-service English teachers participated in the tutoring on the voluntary basis. The survey questionnaires were analyzed statistically, and the effects of the tutoring program were analyzed qualitatively. The results show that NK refugee students reported the severe difficulties in learning English, their increased awareness of the slightly improved English skills over the tutoring program, the increased awareness of their affects, and the increased awareness of their linguistics development at the end of the tutoring. Pedagogical implications for supporting NK refugee college students are discussed.

영어 교육 시장이 증대되면서 영어 학습을 효과적으로 지원하는 다양한 학습 시스템들이 개발되고 있다. 영어문장을 구성하는 기본적인 단위는 어휘로 문장 전체의 의미를 파악하기 위해서는 어휘의 의미를 이해하는 것이 필수적이다. 따라서 영어 어휘 능력 향상을 위한 다양한 영어 어휘 학습 시스템들이 개발되고 있으나, 어휘가 사용되는 문맥을 고려하거나 동시에 학습하면 효과적인 어휘 등 어휘 학습에 효과적인 교수학습 방법의 원리가 적용된 영어 어휘 학습 시스템에 대한 연구는 미비한 상황이다. 본 논문에서는 n 개의 영어 단어가 하나의 그룹으로 동시에 제시되면서 그 n개의 영어 단어가 모두 포함된 예문을 제공하는 지능형 영어 어휘 학습 시스템을 설계한다. 임의로 n 개의 영어 어휘가 주어졌을 경우 문맥에 맞게 영어 예문을 자동으로 생성하는 지능형 영어 문장 생성 모델이 본 연구의 핵심이다. 또한, 어휘 능력 평가에서 기존 어휘 학습 시스템과 같이 단순히 어휘를 얼마나 암기하고 있는지에 대한 평과 결과만을 제시하는 것이 아니라, 그룹별 취약 어휘 분석을 통해 효과적인 그룹 어휘 선택 규칙을 파악할 수 있는 기반을 마련하고자 한다. 본 논문에서 제안한 지능형 영어 어휘 학습 시스템을 통해 영어 어휘 학습자들의 학습 능력 향상에 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다.
