  • A feature extraction method for the objects that have a circular cross section is proposed. To implement a robust recognition system which can effectively deal with various types of 2-dimensional image and 3-dimensional image, both 2- dimensional information and 3-dimensional information should be collectively extracted and combined for the optimum. For this, this paper presents a feature extraction method for 3-dimensional objects, particularly for the objects with a circular cross section which most objects in the real world are known to have. Firstly, the Z gradient is proposed to extract the shape information from those objects. Using this information, normal vectors are derived from the surface patches. The intersection points between the vectors are applied to the geometric feature extraction. Also, for more accurate recognition, a feature extraction method for between surface regions is proposed. Finally, the extraction method of function information is investigated for the final recognition process. The usefulness of the proposed method is proved through the experimentation.

  • Multi-view video is obtained by capturing one three-dimensional scene with many cameras at different positions. Multi-view video coding requires high computational complexity. To reduce computational complexity and maintain the image quality, an effective early termination motion estimation method is proposed in this paper. The proposed method exploiting the characteristic of motion vector distribution uses a hierarchical search strategy. This strategy method consists of multi-grid square search pattern, modified diamond search pattern, small diamond search pattern and raster search pattern. Experiment results show that the speedup improvement of the proposed method over TZ search method and FS(Full Search) method JMVC (Joint Multiview Video Coding) can be up to 1.7~4.5 times and 90 times faster respectively while maintaining similar video quality and bit rates.

  • The vehicle recognition consists of two steps; the vehicle region detection step and the vehicle identification step based on the feature extracted from the detected region. Features using linear transformations have the effect of dimension reduction as well as represent statistical characteristics, and show the robustness in translation and rotation of objects. Among the linear transformations, the NMF(Non-negative Matrix Factorization) is one of part-based representation. Therefore, we can extract NMF features with sparsity and improve the vehicle recognition rate by the representation of local features of a car as a basis vector. In this paper, we propose a feature extraction using NMF suitable for the vehicle recognition, and verify the recognition rate with it. Also, we compared the vehicle recognition rate for the occluded area using the SNMF(sparse NMF) which has basis vectors with constraint and LVQ2 neural network. We showed that the feature through the proposed NMF is robust in the urban scene where occlusions are frequently occur.

  • This paper introduces the concept of warped discrete cosine transform (WDCT) and an image compression algorithm based on the WDCT. The proposed WDCT is a cascade connection of a conventional DCT and all-pass filters whose parameters can be adjusted to provide frequency warping. In the proposed image compression scheme, the frequency response of the all-pass filter is controlled by a set of parameters with each parameter for a specified frequency range. For each image block, the best parameter is chosen from the set and is sent to the decoder as a side information along with the result of corresponding WDCT computation. For actual implementation, the combination of the all-pass IIR filters and the DCT can be viewed as a cascade of a warping matrix and the DCT matrix, or as a filter bank which is obtained by warping the frequency response of the DCT filter bank. Hence, the WDCT can be implemented by a single matrix computation like the DCT. The WDCT based compression, outperforms the DCT based compression, for high bit rate applications and for images with high frequency components.

  • This paper proposes a new fire-smoke detection method by using extracted features from camera images and pattern recognition technique. First, moving regions are detected by analyzing the frame difference between two consecutive images and generate candidate smoke regions by applying smoke color model. A smoke region generally has a few characteristics such as similar color, simple texture and upward motion. From these characteristics, we extract brightness, wavelet high frequency and motion vector as features. Also probability density functions of three features are generated using training data. Probabilistic models of smoke region are then applied to observation nodes of our proposed Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBN) for considering time continuity. The proposed algorithm was successfully applied to various fire-smoke tasks not only forest smokes but also real-world smokes and showed better detection performance than previous method.

  • This paper presents a new postprocessing method to eliminate the false minutiae, that caused by the skelectonization of fingerprint image, and an image compression method using Isometric Self Organizing Map(ISOSOM). Since the SOM has simple structure, fast encoding time, and relatively good classification characteristics, many image processing areas adopt this such as image compression and pattern classification, etc. But, the SOM shows limited performances in pattern classification because of it's single layer structure. To maximize the performance of the pattern classification with small code book, we a lied the Isometric SOM with the isometry of the fractal theory. The proposed Isometric SOM postprocessing and compression algorithm of fingerprint image showed good performances in the elimination of false minutiae and the image compression simultaneously.

  • This paper aims at faster processing and retrieval in fingerprint identification systems by reducing the amount of preprocessing and the size of the feature vector. The distribution of fingerprint directions is a set of local directions of ridges and furrows in small overlapped blocks in a fingerprint image. It is extracted initially as a set of 8-direction components through the Gabor filter bank. The discontinuous distribution of directions is smoothed to a continuous one and visualized as a direction image. Then the center of the distribution is selected as a reference point. A feature vector is composed of 192 sine values of the ridge angles at 32-equiangular positions with 6 different distances from the reference point in the direction image. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm performs the same level of correct identification as a conventional algorithm does, while speeding up the overall processing significantly by reducing the length of the feature vector.

  • This paper defines the visual basic speech units, visemes and investigates various visual features of a lip for the effective Korean lipreading. First, we analyzed the visual characteristics of the Korean vowels from the database of the lip image sequences obtained from the multi-speakers, thereby giving a definition of seven Korean vowel visemes. Various spatio-temporal features of a lip are extracted from the feature points located on both inner and outer lip contours of image sequences and their classification performances are evaluated by using a hidden Markov model based classifier for effective lipreading. The experimental results for recognizing the Korean visemes have demonstrated that the feature victor containing the information of inner and outer lip contours can be effectively applied to lipreading and also the direction and magnitude of the movement of a lip feature point over time is quite useful for Korean lipreading.

  • In this paper, it is proposed for algorithm to detect human efficiently using a edge symmetry and gradient directional characteristics in realtime by the feature extraction in a single input image. Proposed algorithm is composed of three stages, preprocessing, region partition of human candidates, verification of candidate regions. Here, preprocessing stage is strong the image regardless of the intensity and brightness of surrounding environment, also detects a contour with characteristics of human as considering the shape features size and the condition of human for characteristic of human. And stage for region partition of human candidates has separated the region with edge symmetry for human and size in the detected contour, also divided 1st candidates region with applying the adaboost algorithm. Finally, the candidate region verification stage makes excellent the performance for the false detection by verifying the candidate region using feature vector of a gradient for divided local area and classifier. The results of the simulations, which is applying the proposed algorithm, the processing speed of the proposed algorithms is improved approximately 1.7 times, also, the FNR(False Negative Rate) is confirmed to be better 3% than the conventional algorithm which is a single structure algorithm.
