This study was carried out to elucidate the proper split application method of nitrogen fertilizer for early dry seeding culture of rice in Honam plain area from 1997 to 1998 in Korea. Dongjinbyeo was selected as rice variety for this experiment. The rate of $160kg\;ha^{-1}$ of nitrogen was split as 40-30-30% of total nitrogen at three different application time combination ; T1) basal-5th leaf-panicle formation(PF) stage, T2) 3rd leaf-5th leaf-PF, and T3) 3rd leaf-7th leaf-PF. The content of $NH_4-N$ in soil at 5th leaf stage was higher in top dressing plots(T2, T3) compared with basal application(T1), at 7th leaf stage it was most in top dressed at 3rd leaf and 5th leaf stage, but there was no difference at heading stage. Amount of nitrogen uptake and nitrogen use efficiency was higher in the order of T3, T2 and T1(basal application). Spikelet number per unit area was more in the order of T3, T2 and T1, but rate of ripened grain and 1,000 grain weight were not significantly different among three nitrogen split application methods. Milled rice yields were higher in top dressed plots compared with basal nitrogen application plots. From the results of this experiment, reasonable nitrogen split application method for early dry seeding culture of rice could be 40-30-30% of total nitrogen at 3rd leaf, 7th leaf and panicle formation stage.
This study was conducted to find out the variation in some medicinal components of Korean green tea by processing recipe and harvesting time in Bongsan-ri(steamroasted green tea) and Buchun-ri(roasted green tea) area. Total chlorophyll content of green tea grown at Bongsan-ri and Buchun-ri was 293mg% and 275mg% and ratio of chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b was 70:30 and 67:33 respectively. The later harvested one had the higher chlorophyll content but the chlorophyll content of the last harvested green tea at Buchun-ri decreased more sharply. Water-soluble pectin of green tea produced at Bongsan-ri and Buchun-ri was 2.05% and 1.84%, respectively. It also increased at the later harvested ones. Total amino acids content of Bongsan-ri and Buchun-ri tea was 2,156mg% and 1,723mg%, respectively. The later harvested tea showed the remarkably decreased. Caffein and catechins of Bongsan-ri and Buchun-ri tea were 2.03%, 11.52% and 2.62%, 14.05%, respectively, Total free catechins content of Bongsan-ri and Buchun-ri tea was 35.59% and 42.73%, and ester type was 58.09% and 44.47%, respectively. Extracted catechins and caffeins of green tea were increased when extracting water temperature was raised from $65^{\circ}C$ to 85$^{\circ}C$ and leaching time was lengthened from 3min. to 9min. About 89% catechins and 97% caffeins of green tea was extracted by nine minutes soaking in 85$^{\circ}C$ water.
To investigate effects of water stress on leaf water potential, nitrate reductase activity and abscisic acid content, Paldalkong, Saealkong and Danyeobkong were subjected to water stress by polyethyene glycol(PEG, MW=6,000) in the water culture and withholding irrigation in soil culture. Leaf water potential and nitrate reductase activity decreased with increaseing of PEG concentration in the water culture. These were higher at 3rd and 5th leaf stage than at 1st leaf stage. Leaf water potential showed no significant differance among the varieties, but nitrate redutase activity was higher in Paldalkong than in Saealkong and Danyeobkong. Leaf water potential and nitrate reductase activity decreased approximately 2.2 times (-1.67 MPa/-0.75MPa) and 47%(3.1${\mu}$ mole nitrite/g.DW/hour/15.9${\mu}$ mole nitrite/g.DW/hour) to control, respectively, after 3 days from water stress treatment in the soil culture. According to increasing PEG concentration, abscisic acid content increased in the water culture and was higher at 5th leaf stage than at 1st and 3rd leaf stage. Paldalkong showed the highest abscisic acid content. Abscisic acid content increased approximately 1.7 times (9.9nmole/g.DW/5.7nmole/g.DW) compared to the control after 3 days from water stress treatment in the soil culture.
Ethanol-soluble amino acids and phenolics in healthy and blast-infected leaves of the susceptible rice cultivar Nakdong and adult-plant-resistant cultivar Dobong were quantitatively analyzed, At the 3 days after inoculation, the levels of soluble amino acids and phenolics in the infected fifth and eighth leaves of the two cultivars ere similar to those of comparable healthy controls. As blast lesions appeared on the leaves at the 5 days after inoculation, the soluble amino acids and phenolics began to increase. At the 7 days after inoculation, the levels of amino acids and phenolics were about 1.5-3 times more than those in healthy controls at the five-and eight leaf stages. The adult-plant-resistant cultivar Dobong showed higher amounts of soluble amino acids and phenolics in both healthy and infected fifth and eighth leaves than did the susceptible cultivar Nakdong, although Dobong was less infected by Pyricularia oryzae than Nakdong, The pronounced increases in amino acids and phenolics in rice leaves of the cultivar Dobong during the blast infection may play an important role in the expression of adult-plant resistance to blast.
Growth, nutrient uptake and photosynthesis as affected by submersion of shoot in pickerel weed (Monochoria vaginalis Presl.) were determined. The shoots of pickerel weeds in hydroponic culture were subjected to the submerged or emerged condition at 3- or 5-leaf stage for 8 or 10 days. Under submerged condition, growth in plant height was enhanced, but leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry weight were reduced compared to those under the emerged condition. Similar responses in growth to submergence were obtained with the pickerel weeds rooted in the soil. Under submergence, chlorophyll content increased during the first 2 days, but thereafter remarkably decreased at 3-leaf stage and after the first 4 days at 5-leaf stage. Compared to the emerged condition, uptakes of $NH_4\;^+$-N, $NO_3\;^-$-N, $P_2O_5$ and $K^+$ were reduced, but uptakes of $Ca^{++}$ and $Mg^{++}$ increased under the submerged condition. Photosynthetic rate of shoot under water, measured by $CO_2$electrode, showed the maximum by 210 ${\mu}$moles $HCO_3\;^-$/g F.W. at the 8th day after submergence(DAS) at 3-leaf stage and 320 ${\mu}$moles $HCO_3\;^-$/g F. W. at 6 DAS at 5-leaf stage. These results indicate that pickerel weeds grow much better when the shoot is air-exposed and are less tolerable to submergence at 3 leaf-stage than at 5-leaf stage.
A novel quinolineoxadiazoles, substituted the carboxylic acid group with 1,2,4-oxadiazole radicle, of KSC-16960 and related compounds were evaluated to examine the herbicidal activity, crop injury and residual effect of after-vegetable crops compared with those of quinclorac (3,7-dichloro-8-quinolinecarboxylic acid), of which use is now banned because of its residual activity to some succeeding vegetable crops. KSC-16960 showed 2- and 3-leaf stages of barnyardgrasses effectively controlled by more than 95 and 90%, respectively, at a rate of 6.25 g/ha. The dose of KSC-16960 controlled 4- and 5-leaf stages of barnyardgrasses by more than 90% were found to be 50 g and 100 g/ha, respectively. The selectivity of KSC-16960 between direct-seeded rice and barnyardgrass was approximately 2-fold higher than that of quinclorac when they were treated to the soil. The selectivity indices of KSC-16960 and of quinclorac between 1-leaf stage of direct seeded rice and 5-leaf stage of barnyardgrass were 44 and 23, respectively, and those between 1-leaf stage of direct seeded rice and 4-leaf stage of barnyardgrass were almost 2-fold higher. Application of KSC-16960 with bentazone exhibited an additive controlling effect on several weed species, but that of quinclorac exhibited an antagonistic effect. With pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, on the other hand, both application of KSC-16960 and quinclorac showed additive interactions. Under a greenhouse condition, the residual activity of KSC-16960 to succeeding tomato plants was approximately 4-fold lower compared to that of quinclorac. KSC-16960 could be substituted for quinclorac, if it will be made some more improvement for reducing residual activity.

To determine the damages to waxy corn caused by low temperature weather, we investigated the relationship between the temperature and duration of low temperature treatment and the changes in growth characteristics during the recovery period after the treatments in different growth periods. Growth inhibition started in the low temperature group treated at temperatures below 5℃ for three days. The inhibition ratio (IR) was more than 22% or more in all sample groups. As the treatment duration increased and the Temperature decreased, the growth was more greatly inhibited than that in the control. The IR was the highest at 27% or more in the 2nd leaf stage group treated at below 5℃ for 5 days. The IR was in the order of 2nd leaf stage > 1st leaf stage > coleoptile. The IR during recovery was the highest in the 2nd leaf stage group treated at -3℃ degree for 7 days, nd the values were 82% and 98% for NDVI and Fv/Fm, respectively. Especially, all groups treated at -3℃ showed either no changes or decreases in the growth characteristics. As a result, growth inhibition increased as the temperature decreased, and as the duration of the low temperature increased. The degree of damage was in the order of 2nd leaf stage > 1st leaf stage > coleoptile. All early seedlings stopped growing and withered when exposed to temperatures at or below -3℃ for 3 days or more.
To characterize elastic and plastic chilling injury, rice seedlings grown at 28/$16^{\circ}C$ day/night temp. under 20K lux (13hrs.) in a phytotron were subjected to a 11/$6^{\circ}C$, 20K lux condition for 2, 4, 6 or 8 days at 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5th leaf-stage, respectively, followed by further growth under 28/$16^{\circ}C$condition till 30th day after seeding. Japonica variety Jinheung and Chulwon No.1 survived almost 100% without any significant , discoloration and death of leaves due to chilling even under the chilling of 8 days at all seedling ages tested. Tongil and Yushin, varieties from Indica x Japonica cross, showed increasing discoloration of leaves and death of plants with increase in chilling intensity. The longest chilling duration shown seedling death less than 5% was 4, 6, 1, 4, 8 days for Tongil, and 6, 6, 1, 2, 2, days for Yushin at 1, 2, 3, 5th leaf-stage, respectively. The degree of discoloration and death of leaves or suppression of height growth was not explicitly related to seedling death or the dry weight reduction. The degree of seedling death or dry weight reduction could differentiate chilling tolerance of varieties and seedling ages, but somewhat differently. Reduction in dry weight due to chilling occurred even without any visible injury or seedling death. These suggest that both the degree of seedling death and reduction in dry weight should be considered in the test of varieties for chilling tolerance. Combined evaluation of seedling death and dry weight reduction indicated the most susceptible seedling age to chilling injury to be 1 to 2nd leaf-stage for Jinheung, 2 to 3rd leaf-stage for Chulwon No.1, 3rd leaf- stage for Tongil and Yushin, respectively.
This experiment was conducted to study sex expression and subsequent changes in protein and peroxidase after three cultivars of cucumber plants were treated with ethephon and gibberellin. The three cultivars of cucumber used in this study included 'Sayeup' (monoecious type), 'Sinrokdadaki' (gynoecious type), and 'Seonghowon' (intermediate type). The ethephon at 250 ppm and gibberellin at 100 ppm were treated at the 2-leaf and 4-leaf stages, and subsequent sex expression and changes in protein contents, peroxidase activities and isoperoxidase banding patterns by disc polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were studied. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. Ethephon treatment slightly increased number of pistillate flowers and significantly decreased number of staminate flowers in the three cultivars, while gibberellin treatment significantly increased number of staminate flowers in both gynoecious 'Sinrokdadaki' and intermediate 'Seonghowon' and did not increase number of staminate flowers in monecious 'Sayeup' 2. There were some differences among three cultivars in protein contents, protein banding and isoperoxidase banding patterns of seeds and germinating seeds. However, it was not obvious to differentiate monoecious from gynoecious cultlvars by these characters. 3. Protein contents in the leaves. and stem apex after ethephon and gibberellin treatment increased gradually at the 2-leaf stage, but decreased at the 4-leaf stage. Protein contents in stem apex at the 4-leaf stage without treatment were much higher in 'Sinrokdadaki' and 'Seonghowon' than in monoecious 'Sayeup'. Protein contents in the stern apex at the 4-leaf stage were increased in the ethephon-treated monoecious 'Sayeup' and decreased in 'Sinrokdadaki' and 'Seonghowon' compared with untreated plants. 4. Peroxidase activities in the leaves and stem apex gradually decreased at the 2- leaf stage, but increased at the 4-leaf stage. Peroxidase activities in stern apex at the 4-leaf stage were significantly increased by ethephon treatment. 5. The number of protein bands in the three cuitivars after treatment gradually decreased in leaves and stem apex at the 2-leaf stage, but increased in the 4-leaf stage. The protein banding pat terns of stern apex of the ethephon-treated monoecious 'Sayeup' at the 4-leaf stage were gradually shifted to the banding.
Effects of weed removal time on maize growth and yield were evaluated in the fields dominated with Poligonum spp., Chenopodium album, Echinochloa crusgalli and Digitaria adsendens from 1982 to 1983 in Suweon. Weed removal treatments were as follows: (a) kept weedfree all season, (b) weeded at 10 day intervals after maize emergence but stopped weeding at 3,5,7,9 leaf stages, (c) weeds initially removed at 3,5,7 and 9 leaf stages and the plots then kept weed free, (d) weeds left all season. Maize kept weed free from maize emergence to 7 leaf stages showed no grain yield reduction due to competition from weeds emerging later, but weeding from emergence to 3 and 5 leaf stages reduced grain yield 46 and 44%, respectively, in 1982 and 29 and 18%, respectively, in 1983. Weeding at 3 leaf stage and thereafter did not influence grain yield but initial weedings at 5, 7 and 9 leaf stages reduced grain yield 10, 36, and 67%, respectively, in 1982 and 14,18, and 21%, respectively, in 1983. Responses of maize to weeding time in the dry matter yields were same as in the grain yields.
