In order to understand the plant responses to salt stress (0, 50, and 100 mM NaCl), Chinese cabbage seedlings grown up to two leaf stages by hydroponic culture were used. Fresh and dry weight, chlorophyll (Chl), antioxidant materials, polyamine content, antioxidant enzyme activities, and inorganic ion level were evaluated. Fresh and dry weights of Chinese cabbage increased with the increase in salinity while the optimal growth occurred at 50 mM NaCl. The Chl a, total Chl, carotenoid content, and Chl a/b ratio increased by the 6 days after treatment with 100 mM NaCI; however, the Chl b content decreased. Glutathione increased in the root of Chinese cabbage for 6 days. Dehydroascorbate increased remarkably by day 6 caused by the salt stress in both leaf and the root. While ascorbate peroxidase increased, the activity of catalase and glutathione reductase decreased gradually in the first leaf for 6 days. The $Na^+$ content increased by 12.5-fold in the 3 days after treatment with 100 mM NaCI in the shoot, whereas the $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$, and $Mg^{2+}$ content measured in the same treatment decreased by 43 to 57%. Spermidine content decreased as salinity increased, but spermine content increased. The growth promotion, glutathione and ascorbic acid content in Chinese cabbage were increased by low salt stress, and shortening of the cultivation period for growth increase of Chinese cabbage is expected.

Many crops including cereals, tuber crops, feeds, and turf grasses are often damaged by various environmental stresses such as drought, salt, cold, and high temperature, causing the reduction of their productivity. Plants are sessile and cannot escape from environmental stresses. Thus, plants evolve in the direction of overcoming the environmental stresses. Some plant genes such as ARF, ABI3, NAC, HSF, and WRKY are known to respond to environmental stresses as they transcriptionally regulate the stress response pathways. For example, the OsWRKY76 gene contributes to the enhanced resistance to low temperatures and pathogenic infections. The AtWRKY28 also plays a role in environmental stresses. Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) is popularly grown for gardens and golf courses. However, the function of the WRKY gene, another environmental stress-related gene, is not known in zoysiagrass. In this study, the ZjWRKY3 and ZjWRKY7 genes with one shared WRKY domain have been isolated in zoysiagrass. The expression of these genes increased in response to low temperature, drought, and salt stresses. Furthermore, the infection of the brown patch-causing Rhozoctonia solani induced the expression of ZjWRKY3 and ZjWRKY7. The corresponding proteins bind to the W-box of the Zjchi promoter, possibly regulating their transcriptions. The researchers suggest that the ZjWRKY3 and ZjWRKY7 genes transcriptionally regulate abiotic and biotic stress related downstream genes.

This study was conducted to obtain basic information on physiological and proteomic responses of barley seedlings to salt stress. Shoot dry weight decreased significantly as the level of soil salinity increased. Salt stress-induced decrease of relative shoot dry weight was lower in cv. "Sanglok" than in cv. "Sunwoo". Under the salt stress, SPAD value decreased, and the value was higher in cv. "Sanglok" than in cv. "Sunwoo". Sodium ion content in the leaves increased as NaCl concentration increased, and the content was higher in cv. "Sunwoo" than in cv. "Sanglok". The K+/Na+ ratio was higher in cv. "Sanglok" than in cv. "Sunwoo". Salt stress-induced alterations in protein expression of the leaves were detected by two dimensional electrophoresis, and 47 protein spots showing altered expression were selected. Among the selected protein spots, 17 protein spots were up-regulated and 28 spots down-regulated in cv. "Sanglok". In cv. "Sunwoo", 14 protein spots were up-regulated and 27 spots down-regulated. Out of 47 deferentially expressed protein spots, 18 protein spots were identified using mass spectrometry and NCBI protein database. Among the identified proteins, ten proteins are known to be involved in various stress responses, but the others are not directly involved in stress responses.
This experiment was carried out in order to elucidate the effect of NaCl(0.85%) acclimation on congestion symptoms in central venous sinuses(CVS) of gill filaments and on the alteration of blood constituents in cultured eels for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7days after handling stress. After giving a handling stress on eels, the frequency of gill congestion was about 90%. It gradually decreased to 40% on the 3rd day, then increased to 60% on the 7th day in NaCl(0.85%) acclimation. The values of haematocrit(Ht), methemoglobin(Met-Hb), glucose (GLU), calcium($Ca^{++}$), lactic dehydrogenase(LDH), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase(GOT) were lower than those of the control, whereas magnesium($Mg^{++}$) and haemoglobin(Hb) were higher than the control. However total protein(Tp) and albumin (ALB) levels similar to the control. When the fish after giving a handling stress were cultured in NaCl-free water as a control, the frequency of gill congestion and the value of blood components showed a similar pattern to that obtained from the NaCl acclimated experiments. However, in the early period(1-3day) after handling stress, NaCl acclimating slightly helped the natural tendancy of recovery. These results suggest that the frequency of gill congestion is not always reduced over the whole period of NaCl acclimation. However, the acclimation to NaCl solution may be a somewhat useful therapy for the gill congestion in stressed eels.
A diverse range of stresses such as heat, cold, salt, ethanol, oxygen starvation or nutrient starvation induces same stress-responsive proteins. This general stress response enhances bacterial survival significantly. In Bacillus subtilis and closely related Gram-positive bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, the general stress response is controlled by the alternative transcription factor ${\sigma}^B$. The activity of ${\sigma}^B$ is regulated post-translationally by a signal transduction network that has been extensively studied in B. subtilis, and serve as a model for L. monocytogenes. The proposed model of L. monocytogenes signal transduction network is similar to that of B. subtilis, but the energy stress pathway is missing. More than 150 general stress proteins belong to ${\sigma}^B$ regulon of B. subtilis and L. monocytogenes. In both bacteria, ${\sigma}^B$ function is primarily important for resistance to diverse stresses. In addition, ${\sigma}^B$ function contributes to the control of important virulence genes in food-borne pathogen L. monocytogenes. Therefore, understanding of the general stress response is important not only for bacterial physiology, but also for pathogenicity.
The effect of Si supplied during plant cultivation on tolerance to high temperature stress in Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. 'Ichiban' was investigated. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 10-cm pots and a complete nutrient solution, containing 0 or $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ Si as either $K_2SiO_3$, $Na_2SiO_3$, or $CaSiO_3$, was supplied through subirrigation or weekly foliar applications. After two months of cultivation, plants were placed in an environment-controlled chamber and subjected to $35{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ (high temperature) conditions for 18 days. Enhanced specific activities of enzymatic antioxidants (APX) and suppressed specific activities of non-enzymatic antioxidants (ELP) were observed in the high temperature-stressed plants with Si application. The Fv/Fm (maximum quantum yield of photosystem II), photosynthetic rate, and Si contents in the shoot increased in the treatments of $K_2SiO_3$ and $Na_2SiO_3$ supplied through subirrigation. The Si-treated plants had more tolerance of high temperature stress than the control plants. Of the Si sources and application methods tested, $K_2SiO_3$ and $Na_2SiO_3$ supplied through subirrigation were found to be the most effective in enhancing tolerance to high temperature stress.

The aim of this study was to identify stress, motivation for a the healthy lifestyle and IADL of the elderly with arthritis. This study examined 117 elderly person over the age of 65 years living in S city. The data were analyzed using an independent t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS Win 12.0 Program. Significant negative correlations were observed between stress and IADL, significant positive correlations between motivation on healthy lifestyle and IADL. The predictors on IADL were the physical area of stress (${\beta}=-0.354$, p<.001) and self-efficacy of motivation on healthy lifestyle (${\beta}=0.250$, p<.001). The model explained 18.5% of the variance. More study will be needed to explore a range of factors influencing the IADL and develop education programs for effective healthy lifestyle of elderly people with arthritis.

Plant senescence is one of the survival strategies to use limited nutrients efficiently during growth, development and adaptation. In this study, we isolated a gene (PagSEN1) homologous to SENESCENCE 1 from Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa. The PagSEN1 gene encodes a putative protein consisting of 243 amino acids containing a rhodanese domain. Southern blot analysis suggested that two copies of the PagSEN1 gene are present in the poplar genome. We characterized its transcriptional expression under various conditions mimicking senescence and environmental stresses. The PagSEN1 was expressed most strongly in mature leaves but most weakly in roots. The gene was significantly up-regulated by treatments with mannitol, NaCl, ABA and JA, but not by cold, SA and GA3. These results indicate that PagSEN1 is involved in senescence response induced by environmental stresses.

On the basis of the reported agriculturally valuable phenotypes resulted from ectopic overexpression of Arabidopsis vacuolar $H^+$-PPase (AVP1), we generated the Chinese cabbage lines expressing AVP1 which then subjected to salt stress to determine the AVP1 expression if it consistently confers the capability for increasing biomass and enhancing tolerance to salinity in other species. Collectively, here we demonstrate that the transgenic young plants show more vigorous growth and higher tolerance to salt stress than wild-type ones. Increased biomass phenotype by AVP1 expression was supported by comparing fresh and dry weights of transgenic and wild type plants grown under normal condition, while higher salt tolerance trait was confirmed by tracing the kinetics of photosystem II quantum yield and DAB-staining under gradually intensified salt stress induced by MS salt or NaCl, followed by normal condition.
