  • Mineral admixtures are used to improve the quality of concrete and to develop sustainability of concrete structures. Supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), such as silica fume (SF), granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and pulverized fly ash (PFA), are gradually recognized as useful mineral admixture for producing high performance concrete. The study on ternary blended concrete utilizing mainly three major mineral admixtures is limited and the study on durability and chloride induced corrosion resistance of ternary blended concrete is very few. This study examines the durability characteristics of the ternary blended concrete composed of different amount of the SCM with ordinary Portland concrete and the study experimentally focuses on corrosion resistance evaluation of ternary blended concrete subjected to chloride attack. In this study, 50% replacement ratio of mineral admixture to OPC was used, while series of combination of $20{\sim}40%$ GGBS, $5{\sim}15%$ SF and $10{\sim}45%$ PFA binder were used for chloride corrosion resistance test. This study concerned the durability properties of the ternary blended concrete including the corrosion resistance, chloride binding, chloride transport and acid neutralization capacity. It was found that the ternary blended concrete utilizing the SCM densified the pore structures to lower the rate of chloride transport. Also, increased chloride binding and buffering to acid were observed for the ternary blended concrete with chlorides in cast.

  • In this research, it was examined chloride ion penetration resistance of slag-replaced concrete and cementless slag concrete considering marine environmental exposure conditions of splash zone, tidal zone and immersion zone. In the design strength of grade 24 MPa, the specimens were tested to determine their compressive strength, scanning electron microscopy images and chloride migration coefficient. Further, chloride ion penetration depth and carbonation depth of specimens exposed to marine environment were measured. Experimental results confirm that chloride migration coefficient of specimens tended to decrease with increasing the replacement ratio of ground granulated blast-furnace slag in accelerated laboratory test. In addition, the specimens exposed to the tidal zone were found to be the greatest chloride ion penetration depth compared to splash zone and immersion zone. On the other hand, the chloride ion penetration depth of the specimens exposed to splash zone tended to increase with increasing the replacement ratio of ground granulated blast-furnace slag in contrast with the results for the tidal zone and immersion zone.

  • The present study concerns the resistance of calcium aluminate cement (CAC) to steel corrosion. The corrosion behavior of steel, chloride binding/buffering and chloride transport were evaluated in order to predict the risk of steel corrosion. The CAC mortar exhibited no corrosion on steel, irrespective of the curing temperature and CAC types, whereas ordinary Portland cement (OPC) showed a severe corrosion on the steel surface. The chloride binding capacity of CAC found to be was lower than that of OPC, yet buffering capacity against pH decrease was found to be significantly higher in the CAC paste. Furthermore, chloride ingress at all depths was found to be reduced in CAC, thereby reducing the risk of corrosion.

  • It is an object of the present paper to investigate a electrochemical properties of Mg-based sacrificial anodes and the effect of calcium added from calcium chloride into magnesium on the melt protection during the melting. Electrochemical data will be correlated with processing control variables, and the microstructural change by the addition of CaCl2. Small addition of calcium into magnesium from CaCl2 imparts beneficial effect in electrochemical properties of Mg alloys, primarily, through microstructural modifications. In addition, the protection effect of the melts surface of Ca with low melting point modification is obtained by adding Ca not more than 0.6%.

  • It is very important for structure designer to understand the service life variation since a wide range of service life is evaluated with changing exposure conditions and design parameters. Recently, for zero-carbon, waste plastic has been used for fuel for clinker production and this yields increase in chloride content in cement. This study is for evaluation of changing service life in the concrete with increasing initial chloride content due to usage of plastic-SRF(Solid Refuse Fuel) considering various exposure conditions and design parameters. For this, 4 levels of initial chloride content were assumed, and the service life was assessed using LIFE 365 program considering various environmental conditions including 3 levels of surface chloride content. As for analysis parameters, critical/initial chloride content, blast furnace slag powder replacement ratio, W/B(Water to Binder) ratio, cover depth, and unit mass for binder are adopted. Service life decreases with increasing initial chloride content and a significant reduction of service life is not evaluated permitting up to 1,000ppm of initial chloride content. With increasing slag replacement ratio, a longer service life can be secured since blast furnace slag powder has the effect of reducing the diffusion of external chloride ions and fixing the free chloride. It is thought that increasing initial chloride content up to European standard is helpful for enhancing sustainability and reducing carbon emission. Though the reduction in service life due to an increase in the initial chloride content is not significant in slag-concrete with low surface chloride content, careful consideration for mixing design should be paid for the exposure environment with high surface chloride content.

  • Corrosion of steel reinforcment is the most significant factor of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. Chloride ion is considered one of the most common culprits in the corrosion of steel in concrete. It breaks down the passive film and allows the steel to corrode actively at a high rate. The main objective of this study is to determine the critical chloride ion concentrations in the pore solutions and chloride binding effect of cement pastes made with and without fly ash. Cement pastes with water-binder ratio of 0.5, allowed to hydrate in sealed containers for 28 days and to express pore solution. The expressed pore fluids were analyzed for chloride and hydroxyl ion concentrations. Evaporable water on paralled specimens was determined a.s the loss of weight per 100g of unhydreded cement when the specimens were heated to constant weight at 105'C. It was found that the replaced cement with fly ash has negligible influnce on the chloride binding and chloride binding capacity and rises the $Cl^-$ /$OH^-$ ratio in pore solution.

  • In general, carbonation and chlorine ions are the most harmful causes of deterioration of concrete structures. Recently, a method has been developed to control the corrosion of rebar in concrete containing chloride by impregnating a Surface coating material with a inhibitor. In this study, accelerated carbonation and differential thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTA) and CASS tests were carried out to evaluate the characteristics of Surface coatings containing Organic Corrosion inhibitors which are excellent in corrosion inhibition and fix degradation causes $CO_2$ and $Cl^-$. As a result of the experiment, TG-DTA analysis and accelerated carbonation showed that $CO_2$ was directly reacted with amine derivative in concrete by the incorporation of Organic Corrosion inhibitor. In other words, $CO_2$ was immobilized and carbonation inhibition effect was confirmed. In addition, in the CASS test, the specimen coated with the Surface coating material containing the Organic Corrosion inhibitor with $Cl^-$ fixing property showed no corrosion until the 28th day and had excellent performance in preventing corrosion of a rebar by the chloride ion.

  • Service life evaluation for RC Structures exposed to chloride attack is very important, however the previous two methods(deterministic and probabilistic method) show a big difference. The paper presents a service life simulation using deterministic and probabilistic method with time-dependent diffusion coefficient. Three different cases are considered for diffusion coefficient, concrete cover depth, and surface chloride content respectively, and then the PDF(probability of durability failure) and the related service life are obtained. Through adopting time-dependent diffusion, the discrepancy between the two methods can be reduced, which yields reasonable service life. When diffusion coefficient increases from $2.5{\times}10^{-12}m^2/sec$ to $7.5{\times}10^{-12}m^2/sec$, the service life decreases to 25.5~35.6% level, and cover depth does from 75 mm to 125 mm, it increases to 267~311% level as well. In the case of surface chloride content from $5.0kg/m^3$ to $15.0kg/m^3$, it changes to 40.9~54.5%. The effect of cover depth is higher than the others by 8~10 times and also implies it is a key parameter to service life extension.

  • Up to now, the RC structures have been recognized as being socially semi-permanent. But in recent years there were reports about the cases of early deterioration of RC structures. Most of all pore structure effects on the durability of concrete as well as mechanical properties of concrete. Therefore, in this study, mixing design was proportioned with the water-binder ratio 0.55 binder compositions corresponding to cement without any supplementary materials(OPC), cement with 50% blast-furnace slag replacement (BFS50), cement with 15% fly ash replacement (FA15), and ternary cement with cement, 15% fly ash, and 35% slag replacement (BFS35+FA15). And this study is to compare pore structure property of concrete by carbonation to investigate the effect of the permeation of deterioration factors such as $CO_2$ and chloride ion under the combined deterioration environments. The results showed that pore volume effects on the diffusibility of chloride ion.

  • Various metal chlorides and acid catalysts in ionic liquid solvent were investigated to directly convert cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). Metal chlorides containing Sn(II), Zn(II), Al(III), Fe(III), Cu(II), and Cr(III) were used and acidic ionic liquid immobilized on silica gel as an acid catalyst and commercial acid catalysts (sulfuric acid, chloric acid, Amberlyst-15,DOWEX50x8) were used for comparison studies. The acid strength and amount of acid catalysts were probed with Hammett indicator. The selectivity and yield of 5-HMF were determined with reaction temperature, reaction time and catalyst ratio. A catalyst containing $CrCl_3-6H_2O$ and $SiO_2-[ASBI]HSO_4$ showed the highest selectivity and it was found that this catalyst had higher activity than commercial solid acid catalysts such as Amberlyst-15 and DOWEX50x8. The selectivity of 5-HMF appeared to be mainly dependent on the acid strength and catalyst ratio, it was found that levulinic acid was produced from 5-HMF by rehydration.
