  • In this study, we investigated the feasibility of calcium sulfate fertilizer as a stabilizing agent for As and Hg contaminated farmland soil and its stabilization characteristics in 3 different physical forms (particulate, powder, and solution) through a pot experiment including 34 days of lettuce growth. As and Hg contents of the lettuce grown in the stabilized soils were decreased by at least 70%. However the lettuce yield of the soil stabilized with the solution agent was decreased by 46% due to the overabundance of the nutrients from the solution agent. Thus, if a solution-type agent is planned for agricultural farmland soil stabilization, additional tests for optimal dosage are needed to preserve vegetation growth. In Hg fractionation, a lower concentration of elemental fractions and a higher concentration of residual/sulfide fractions were identified in the soils stabilized with the solution, powder, and pariculate agents in descending order while there were no significant changes in As fractionation. Overall results suggest that calcium sulfate fertilizer can be used as a stabilizing agent, and a solution-type agent could be used when the operation of heavy machinery for the soil stabilization process is impossible.

  • The property and applicability of the organic-inorganic synthesized penetrating and reinforcing agent, which is developed in order to improve durability of concrete structures and prevent deterioration that may occur as service years increased, are researched with experimental works. TEOS (tetra-ethoxyorthosilicate) and acrylate monomer are synthesized by the solution polycondensation method in order to formulate silicate with sol-gel process and improve durability of concrete. Additional substances such as isobutyl-orthosilicate is supplemented in order to improve the performance of the agent. After the developed organic-inorganic penetrating reinforcing agent penetrates, a flexible impact alleviating layer is formed with organic monomers as well as the agent strengthens concrete by filling up the internal pore of concrete with stable compounds after penetration. Penetrating and reinforcing agent can be applied as an effective life management method because it makes concrete more durable against the aging factors, such as chloride ion, carbonation, freezing-thawing, and compound aging.

  • Chloride attack, one of the major deterioration phenomena in RC(Reinforced Concrete) structure, causes corrosion of reinforcement, and this leads degradation of serviceability and structural problems. The application of silicate based impregnant to concrete surface are known for excellent constructability and cost-benefit for the maintenance of RC structure. In the work, the compressive strength and resistance of chloride diffusion for concrete were evaluated after improving property of concrete surface through two types of silicate based impregnant. Furthermore, based on the previous research and the result from the work, service life analysis was performed. After impregnating of silicate, strength and resistance of chloride diffusion were remarkably improved, and the service life increase to 159% for silicate A impregnation and 304% for silicate B impregnation, respectively.

  • The corrosion of steel rebars has been the major cause of reinforced concrete deterioration. FRP(Fiber-reinforced polymer) rebar has emerged as one of the most promising and affordable solutions to the corrosion problems of steel reinforcement in structural concrete. However, FRP rebar is prone to deteriorate due to other degradation mechanisms than those for steel. The high alkalinity of concrete, for instance, is a possible degradation source. Therefore, the USA, Japan, Canada, UK. etc are using environmental reduction factor. Although difference design guidelines were drawn in many, including USA, Japan, Canada, UK etc, recommendations and coefficients that could take into account the long-term behavior of FRP reinforcement were not well defined. This study focuses on recommendation of environmental reduction factor of FRP rebar. Environment reduction factor were decided using durability test result. FRP rebars were subjected to twelve type of exposure conditions including alkaline solution, acid solution, salt solution and deionized water etc. The water absorption behavior was observed by means of simple gravimetric measurements and durability properties were investigated by performing tensile, compressive and short beam tests. Based on the experimental result, environmental reduction factor of hybrid FRP rebar(A), and (C) and CFRP rebar was decided as 0.85. Also, hybrid FRP rebar(B) and GFRP rebar were decided as 0.7 for the environmental reduction factor

  • Chloride, which is one of the main deterioration factors in reinforced concrete structures, can degrade the performance of the structure due to chloride-induced corrosion of steel. Chloride content at steel depth or the rate of chloride penetration is necessary to determine deterioration of reinforced concrete or to calculate initiation time of steel corrosion caused by chloride attack. Chlorides in concrete are generally identified with typical two methods including chloride profiling using potentiometric titration method and discoloration method using AgNO3 solution. The former is advantageous to estimate chloride penetration rate (diffusion coefficient in general) with measured chloride contents directly, but it is laborious. In the case of latter, while the result is obtained easily with the range of discoloration, the error may occur depending on workmanship when the depth of chloride ingress is measured. This study shows that chloride penetrated depth is evaluated with the results obtained from discoloration method through image analysis, thereby the error is minimized by workmanship. In addition, the effect of micro-crack in concrete is studied on chloride penetration. In conclusion, the depth of chloride penetration was quantified with image analysis and as it was confirmed that chlorides can rapidly penetrate through micro-cracks, caution is especially required for cracks in concrete structure.

  • As concrete structures are exposed to chemical substances, damaged from salt, or progressed to the neutralization, the surface damage of the structures is generated timely fashion, resulting shortened service life. Especially, the sulfate erosion causes rapid surface defects, and the steel skeleton becomes corroded due to the water infiltration, generating stability deterioration of the concrete structure. In this study, the physical characteristics of the acid-resistant mortar with aluminosilicates was investigated in order to resolve problems of the acid resistance, one of the most serious problems of the cement type repair material. As the result of the experiment, the test specimen turned to exhibit almost equivalent physical characteristics with those of concrete sectional repair materials in terms of compressive and bending strengths. As both the cement sectional repair material and the test specimen were immerged in sulfuric acid solution to examine weight changes, the test specimens exhibited only 4% loss of their weights while the cement sectional repair materials reached at the level of 80% or above, proving the excellence acid resistant characteristics of the test specimens. Consequently, the physical characteristics of acid resistant mortar with aluminosilicates were revealed to be superior than those of concrete sectional repair materials. It can be utilized as a sectional repair material where the acidic erosion is anticipated.
