Comparison of Two-Types Compositions of Mixed Salts in Fused Salt Electrolysis of Magnesium (마그네슘의 용융염전해시(熔融鹽電解時) 두 가지 염욕조성(鹽浴組成)의 비교실험)

  • Magnesium has been used as light and functional material, and its demand is increasing as a material for automobile engine and for mobile phone or notebook PC case. Fused salt electrolysis and thermal reduction are regarded as main methods for the extraction of magnesium, and choice for the method is firstly according to raw material. In this study, magnesium metal is obtained by an electrolysis of magnesium chloride. Two types of fused salt mixtures were used as electrolyte and electrolyzed at 7V with a graphite anode having the same depth, and their results were compared with each other. A mixed salt of $KCl/NaCl/MgCl_2$ was the more effective than $KCl/NaCl/CaCl_2/CaF_2/MgCl_2$ in current efficiency through the experiments at $760^{\circ}C$. Purity of the prepared magnesium metal was above 98%. Some basic data for scale-up of the magnesium electrolysis equipment, which would be necessary for a commercialization, could be obtained.

  • Energy consumption per unit weight of metal (kwh/kg of metal) is one of the most important economic indicators in the process of molten salt electrolysis. It is related to the heat loss of salt bath and the current efficiency of the process. The current efficiency is highly dependent on electrolysis temperature. On the other hand, the temperature of salt bath may increase significantly due to the difference (larger energy input than consumption) in heat balance at the beginning of electrolysis, which may cause different electrolysis temperature from an initially targeted value. This results in a bad effect on current efficiency. Therefore, it will be helpful to the reduction of energy consumption to compare the calculated and measured values of the temperature change of salt bath through the heat balance review at the early stage of electrolysis and to evaluate the energy loss to outside. In this study, based on the authors' experimental data, the heat balance was reviewed at the beginning of the electrolysis, and it was possible to evaluate the energy loss to the outside and the increase of the temperature of the salt bath quantitatively. Through such a method, heat loss reduction plan can be derived and current efficiency can be improved so that energy consumption can be reduced.

Composition and microstructure of Silver-Tin alloy deposits from prophosphate bath (피로인산염욕을 사용한 은-주석 합금도금층의 조성 및 현미경 조직)

  • Composition and microstructures of Silver-Tin alloy deposits from a pyrophosphate bath were studied under the D.C. electrolysis conditions. Cathode current efficiency and throwing power of alloy deposits de-creased with increasing current density. Tin content of Ag-Sn alloy deposits decreased noticeably with the cur-rent density and with decreasing pH. The preferred orientation of the deposits tended to change in sequence of (110)longrightarrow(111)longrightarrow(100) texture with increasing the cathode overpotential. The surface structure of alloy deposits showed the smooth surface structure with fine crystallites.

Corrosion and Oxidation Properties of Ni-Base Superalloy KM 1557 (Ni기 초내열 단조합금 KM 1557의 부식 및 산화성질)

  • Corrosion resistances in various acids and high temperature oxidation properties have been investigated for the Ni-base superalloy KM 1557. Corrosion tests were performed in $H_2SO_4$, HCl, $HNO_3$, $H_3PO_4$ and $CH_3COOH$. Oxidation tests were carried out in air for 20 and 110hrs at $900^{\circ}C$, $950^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$. Hot corrosion tests were done in salt bath of 75% $Na_2SO_4-25%$ NaCl at $900^{\circ}C$ for 20hrs. After the tests, the samples were observed by optical microscopy and analysed by EPMA and X-ray mapping in order to investigate the distribution of composition. It was shown that corrosion resistances in various acids and hot salt bath were proven to be excellent. It was suggested that the amounts of oxides were determined mainly by the depth of internal and intergranular $Al_2O_3$ oxide layers.
