Sea Level Rise due to Global Warming in the Northwestern Pacific and Seas around the Korean Peninsula (지구온난화에 의한 북서태평양 및 한반도 근해의 해수면 상승)

  • This study investigates sea level (SL) rise due to global warming in the Northwestern Pacific (NWP) and Seas around the Korean peninsula (KP) using outputs of IPCC AR4 climate models. Particularly, components of the SL rise induced by a local steric effect, which was not considered in most climate models, were computed using model-projected 3-dimensional temperature and salinity data. Analysis of the SL data shows that the ratio of the SL rise in the NWP and KP was about two times higher than that in global mean and particularly the ratio in the Kuroshio extension region was the highest. The SL rises over 100 years estimated from MPI_ECHAM5 and GFDL_CM2.1 model by A1B scenario considering the thermosteric effect were 24 cm and 28 cm for the NWP and 27 cm and 31 cm for the Seas around the KP, respectively. Statistical analysis reveals that these SL rises are caused by the weakening of the Siberian High in winter as well as variations of pressure system in the NWP and by the resultant change of water temperature. It also found that the highest SL rise in the Kuroshio extension region of the NWP was connected with the large increase of water temperature in this area.

Changes in Leaf Physical Properties of Smilax china L. According to Salt Concentration for Salting and Storage Temperature (염분농도와 저장 온도에 따른 청미래덩굴 잎의 물리성 변화)

  • "Manggaedduk" produced specially in Uiryeong province, Gyeongnam, Korea is manufactured by traditional method using rice powder, sweet azuki bean paste, and leaves of Smilax china (called as Manggae-leaf). Moisture content of leaves did not show significant differences bay salt and purified salt treatment. The content was lower as the salt concentration increased. Shear force was higher in leaf salted with purified salt at room temperature than that salted with bay salt. On the other hands, the force was more higher in the leaves salted with bay salt at low temperature ($4^{\circ}C$). The shear force was higher as the concentration of both salts used for salting solution increased. As storage period was extended, shear force of salted leaf was weakened. Whiteness (L) and yellowness (b) of leaves stored at room temperature were higher than those stored at $4^{\circ}C$, although the redness (a) of Hunter value was not significantly different between storage temperatures. Salt concentration influenced lightness and yellowness, color of salted leaves stored at $4^{\circ}C$ resulted in enhanced greenness as compared to the leaves stored at room temperature. Thus, this study investigated the optimal storage conditions, salting conditions and storage temperatures of Smilax china leaves.

Summer Dynamics of Phytoplankton Taxonomic Composition in a Coastal Estuarine System of Asan Bay (아산만 연안하구 식물플랑크톤의 2006년 하계 종조성 변화)

  • Phytoplankton community was investigated in Asan Bay, South Korea. Samples were collected at 5 stations along Asan Bay axis during wet season from June to August, 2006. In June and July, salinity decreased especially at inside stations. Nutrients were high in June and July, however, decreased in August. We observed the community of phytoplankton including diatoms(62.8%), dinoflagellates(17.3%), cryptophytes(14.8%), euglenophytes(1.0%), cyanophytes (0.9%), chlorophytes(0.4%), and some of unidentified taxa(2.8%) during summer 2006 in Asan Bay. In June, dinoflagellates (mainly Prorocentrum sp.(29.6%)) were dominated, accounting for about 43.5% of total cell number, whereas in July and August diatoms (mainly Leptocylindrus sp.(21.4%), Chaetoceros sp.(27.6%)) were dominated occupying 69.1% and 89.9%, respectively. The results suggest that freshwater inputs affected phytoplankton community in the Asan Bay ecosystem.

The Early-Stage Changes of Water Qualities after the Saemangeum Sea-dike Construction (새만금 방조제 체절 이후 초기의 수질변화에 관한 연구)

  • Saemangeum salt-water Lake has been created by the completion of the sea-dike in April 2006. To monitor the water qualities of the lake during the sea-dike construction, salinity, SS, nutrients(DIN, DIP, DISi), and chlorophyll-$\alpha$ was analyzed for the surface water from 1999 to 2007. Due to the dike construction, weaker tidal current and lesser resuspension of bottom sediment resulted in the marked decrease of the concentrations of SS in the lake water. Consequently the clearer lake water has provided better condition for primary production with deeper penetration of sunlight into the water column and sufficient nutrient content in the water. Finally the chlorophyll-$\alpha$ content became approximately double in the concentration after the dike construction. Highly stimulated algal production with the marked decrease of the concentrations of SS was decreased the concentration of DIP in the surface water. On the other hand the concentration of DIN and DISi in surface water was increased after dike construction due to the expansion of the freshwater and the supply from bottom layer. As a result, the lake revealed an extremely high NIP ratio and a DIP-limited ecosystem. The lake has been transformed from a typical coastal ecosystem to a brackish one. Since the dike completion, the lake has shown a similar change pattern to the Geum River estuary. Due to the salt-wedge intrusion of seawater, it is highly probable to expect the formation of low-oxygen zone at the bottom layer near the river-mouth area of the lake during the summer. Therefore we need a continuous sentinel monitoring of bottom water qualities in the near future.

Estimation of Surface fCO2 in the Southwest East Sea using Machine Learning Techniques (기계학습법을 이용한 동해 남서부해역의 표층 이산화탄소분압(fCO2) 추정)

  • Accurate evaluation of sea-to-air $CO_2$ flux and its variability is crucial information to the understanding of global carbon cycle and the prediction of atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration. $fCO_2$ observations are sparse in space and time in the East Sea. In this study, we derived high resolution time series of surface $fCO_2$ values in the southwest East Sea, by feeding sea surface temperature (SST), salinity (SSS), chlorophyll-a (CHL), and mixed layer depth (MLD) values, from either satellite-observations or numerical model outputs, to three machine learning models. The root mean square error of the best performing model, a Random Forest (RF) model, was $7.1{\mu}atm$. Important parameters in predicting $fCO_2$ in the RF model were SST and SSS along with time information; CHL and MLD were much less important than the other parameters. The net $CO_2$ flux in the southwest East Sea, calculated from the $fCO_2$ predicted by the RF model, was $-0.76{\pm}1.15mol\;m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, close to the lower bound of the previous estimates in the range of $-0.66{\sim}-2.47mol\;m^{-2}yr^{-1}$. The time series of $fCO_2$ predicted by the RF model showed a significant variation even in a short time interval of a week. For accurate evaluation of the $CO_2$ flux in the Ulleung Basin, it is necessary to conduct high resolution in situ observations in spring when $fCO_2$ changes rapidly.

Estimation of High Resolution Sea Surface Salinity Using Multi Satellite Data and Machine Learning (다종 위성자료와 기계학습을 이용한 고해상도 표층 염분 추정)

  • Ocean salinity affects ocean circulation on a global scale and low salinity water around coastal areas often has an impact on aquaculture and fisheries. Microwave satellite sensors (e.g., Soil Moisture Active Passive [SMAP]) have provided sea surface salinity (SSS) based on the dielectric characteristics of water associated with SSS and sea surface temperature (SST). In this study, a Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LGBM)-based model for generating high resolution SSS from Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data was proposed, having machine learning-based improved SMAP SSS by Jang et al. (2022) as reference data (SMAP SSS (Jang)). Three schemes with different input variables were tested, and scheme 3 with all variables including Multi-scale Ultra-high Resolution SST yielded the best performance (coefficient of determination = 0.60, root mean square error = 0.91 psu). The proposed LGBM-based GOCI SSS had a similar spatiotemporal pattern with SMAP SSS (Jang), with much higher spatial resolution even in coastal areas, where SMAP SSS (Jang) was not available. In addition, when tested for the great flood occurred in Southern China in August 2020, GOCI SSS well simulated the spatial and temporal change of Changjiang Diluted Water. This research provided a potential that optical satellite data can be used to generate high resolution SSS associated with the improved microwave-based SSS especially in coastal areas.

  • Nakdong River Estuary is affected by the dam, barrage construction and dredge and reclaim worked artificially. So, we have studied the area input both freshwater and sea water to understand marine environment of Nakdong River estuary related to the effect of artificial work from 2013 to 2015. As a result, The discharge flow to the estuary remarkably decreased before barrage construction and the average of salinity at the estuary increased. So, the brackish water zone reduced under the influence of decreased discharge flow. The major sources of nitrate and silicate were freshwater, phosphate supplied from bottom and the open sea water. The concentration of phosphate and dissolved oxygen (DO) decreased remarkably in spring and summer. we investigated that phosphate in freshwater was removed under the influence of the estuary dam and phosphate in sea water was removed under the influence of phytoplankton. The low concentration of DO was due to decomposition of the organic compound by microorganism after phytoplankton blooms. Generally, the concentrations of chlorophyll-a in summer was higher than spring and fall. Therefore, the change of ecosystem in Nakdong river estuary was due to decrease of freshwater influx, the other change is facing because of the barrage.

  • 댐과 양쪽의 산 능선에 감싸이어 있는 저수지의 모습은 이렇다할만한 특징을 찾아보기가 쉽지 않다. 우리나라의 각지에 건설되어진 다목적댐으로 인해 형성되어진 저수지들을 둘러보아도, 역시 주변의 지형을 자세히 비교해 보기 전에는 구별하기 힘들만큼, 그만큼 외관상으로는 닮아있다. 하지만, 이러한 저수지들이 보여주는 자연현상은 실제로는 너무나도 다양하다. 잔잔한 물 표면의 안쪽에 저마다 눈에 보이지 않는 특성들을 감추고 있으리라 추측해 본다. 하지만, 그 특성을 정량적으로 파악 하기란 좀처럼 쉽지가 않다. 영양염분의 과다 유입으로 부영양화가 초래되면 여기저기서 녹조를 발생 시키고, 또한 홍수나 상류 유역의 토사 붕괴로 인하여 좀처럼 침강되지 않는 미세 입자가 과다 유입되면, 1년 내내 누런 탁수로 몸살을 앓는다. 이처럼, 인간의 눈에 보여 지는 저수지는 '매우 닮은 모습에서 너무나 다른 모습'으로 '계단의 층계변화'와 같은 극단적인 상태 변화만이 파악되어진다. 최근에 들어서, 장비의 발달과 환경에 대한 관심의 고조로 한 달에 한번 많으면 일주일에 한 번씩 현장 조사를 수행하고는 있지만, 지속적으로 저수지를 파악하기 위한 '선형적인 현상'을 보여주기에는 충분하지가 않다. 본 연구에서는, 저수지 수온을 모니터링 함으로서, 홍수와 가뭄과 같은 이벤트 및 계절 변화로 인한 수체의 온도분포를 조사 하였다. 그 방법으로, 자체 개발한 써미스터체인을 용담호의 댐축 지점과 댐축으로부터 상류방향으로 6.6km 떨어진 유입지점의 두 곳에 설치하였으며, 연 중 10분 간격으로 수온데이터를 로거에 저장한 후, 두 달에 한번 정도로 센서 정비 및 데이터 수거를 실시하였다. 그 결과, 우리가 눈으로나 현지관측만으로는 파악할 수 없었던 수체내의 많은 특징을 파악 할 수 있었다.. 중랑천 유역의 소배수구역을 대상으로 연중 발생하는 큰 호우사상에 대해 임의의 강우관측소를 결측지점으로 가정하고 주변의 강우관측소로부터 각각의 방법을 이용해 가중치들을 산정하여 결측지점의 강우량 값을 보정하고자 하였다. 또한 각각의 방법을 이용하여 얻어진 결과에 대해 실측값과 보정값의 오차정도를 평균절대오차법(Mean Absolute Error)과 제곱평균제곱근오차법(Root Mean Squared Error)에 의해 산정하여 보정 방법간의 효율성을 검토하고자 하였다.9년, 그리고 2010년${\sim}$2019년까지 총 4구간으로 나누어 결과를 도출하였으며 예상한 바와 같이 후반기 20년 동안에 세 가지 지표가 취약해 지는 것을 확인할 수 있었고, 특히 2000년부터 2009년까지 10년 동안에는 더욱 취약해짐을 확인할 수 있었다.를 보임에 따라 그 정책적 효과는 때로 역기능적인 결과로 초래하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 연구결과를 통하여 최소한 주식시장(株式市場)에서 위탁증거금제도는 그 제도적 의의가 여전히 있다는 사실이 확인되었다. 또한 우리나라 주식시장에서 통상 과열투기 행위가 빈번히 일어나 주식시장을 교란시킴으로써 건전한 투자풍토조성에 저해된다는 저간의 우려가 매우 커왔으나 표본 기간동안에 대하여 실증분석을 한 결과 주식시장 전체적으로 볼 때 주가변동율(株價變動率), 특히 초과주가변동율(超過株價變動率)에 미치는 영향이 그다지 심각한 정도는 아니었으며 오히려 우리나라의 주식시장은 미국시장에 비해 주가가 비교적 안정적인 수준을 유지해 왔다고 볼 수 있다.36.4%)와 외식을 선호(29.1%)${\lrcorner}$ 하기 때문에 패스트푸드를 이용하게 된 것으로 응답 하였으며, 남 여 대학생간에는 유의한 차이(p<0

  • The present study was conducted to elucidate the pattern in changes of trimethylamine oxide and related compounds in the muscle of Alaska pollack during drying, especially referred to formaladehyde and dimethylamine. Three kinds of dried samples of Alaska pollack, sun dried, hot-air dried, and salted-sun dried, were prepared and analyzed for their contents of trimethylamine oxide, trimethylamine, dimethylamine, and formaldehyde. The amount of trimethylamine oxide remained in the salted-sun dried sample was relatively higher than those in the other two samples. In the content of trimethylamine, the hot-air dried sample showed an exceedingly high value shelving forty-two times higher than the raw sample while the other two samples showed barely three to four times content based on the raw sample. The dimethylamine content in the hot-air fried sample was comparatively lower than those in the other two samples, the former marked about ten folds of the raw sample's and tile latter showed about fifteen folds, respectively. Refering to the content of formaldehyde, it decreased to eighty-three percent of initial content in the hot-air dried sample. On the contrary, it increased about two times initial content in the other two samples, respectively. As a tendency, the formaldehyde content appeared increased or decreased correlatively with the dimethylamine content, whereas the case was reverse for the trimethylamine content.

  • We investigated the changes of chemical compositions during fermentation of salted anchovy by salting methods for the purpose of establishment of processing condition. Dehydration of anchovy meat occurred remarkably by dry salting compared with that by brine salting and salinity was higher in anchovy by brine salting than by dry salting. Dehydration and salinity were increased in more anchovy fermented at $20^{\circ}C$ than at $5^{\circ}C$. Total nitrogen content was lower in anchovy by brine salting than by dry salting. Amino nitrogen increased remarkably during fermentation of salted anchovy at $20^{\circ}C$, while increased slightly at$5^{\circ}C$. Amino nitrogen showed maximum value on 120 days in dry salting and on 30 days in brine salting at $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. The changes of VBN were similar to the changes of amino nitrogen. The brine salting accelerated hydrolysis of anchovy meat compared with that of dry salting at $20^{\circ}C$, and the hydrolysis were suppressed at $5^{\circ}C$, The POV increased rapidly in dry-salted anchovy than brine-salted anchovy. We suggested that the appropriate processing condition of salted anchovy is to ferment for 5-6 months at $5^{\circ}C$ by addition of $25\%$ salt after pre-salting of raw anchovy.
