  • KAISTSAT- 4, an experimental small satellite, is being developd by Satellite Technology Research Center in KAIST as a sequel mission to KITSAT-1, 2, and 3. The flight model scheduled to be launched in 2003, the qualification model construction and testing have been completed recently. The satellite subsystems of the qualification model have been tested under a thermal vacuum environment harsher than expected in the orbit. Thermal balance test has also been done in order to evaluate and tune the thermal analysis model of the qualification model. This paper describes the thermal vacuum test procedure, the results, as well as the lessons learned during the tests, which can be useful for future thermal vacuum tests of small satellites.

  • The Hybrid Safety Injection Tank is a passive safety injection system that enables the safety injection water to be injected into the reactor pressure vessel throughout all operating pressures by connecting the top of the SIT and the pressurizer(PZR). In this study, the condition for balancing the pressure between the Hybrid SIT and PZR was derived theoretically. The pressure balancing condition was set at the point where the velocity of the Hybrid SIT coolant injected into the Direct Vessel Injection(DVI) line was at or above zero. If the condition was derived from a pressure network for the Hybrid SIT, pressurizer, and reactor pressure vessel, the pressure difference between the pressurizer and SIT is less than 0.07 MPa.

  • COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and was developed by KARI for communication, ocean and meteorological observations. COMS was tested under vacuum and very law temperature conditions in order to correlate thermal model and to verify thermal design. The test was performed by using KARI large thermal vacuum chamber. The COMS S/C thermal model was successfully correlated versus the 2 thermal balance test phases. After model correlation, temperatures deviation of all individual unit were less than $5^{\circ}C$ and global deviation and standard deviation also satisfied the requirements, less than $2^{\circ}C$ and $3^{\circ}C$. The final flight prediction was performed by using the correlated thermal model.

  • Backfill material with thermal resistivity which has $50^{\circ}C$-cm/Watt in wet and $100^{\circ}C$-cm/Watt in dry is requested to improve the power transfer capability for dissipation of heat production in underground power cables. In the field test performed by buried cable backfills, the backfill material developed from this study is compared with river sand and weathered soil (native soil) to investigate the effect of heat transfer in various seasons and locations of thermal sensors. As a result, the developed backfill material is faster approaching yielding temperature (critical heat) than that of river sand and weathered soil, and it has good dissipation capacity rather than other materials by keeping moisture content at dry season.

  • The major role of a spacecraft structure is to keep and support the spacecraft safely in all the launch environment, on-orbit condition and during ground-transportation and handling. In a satellite development, a structural and thermal model (STM) is developed for two goals ; demonstration of a structural and a thermal stability. In the structure point of view, STM is used to verify the static/dynamic characteristics of structure in the initial stage of development. In this paper, the structure design/analysis of high resolution LEO earth observation satellite STM is described. Also, a low level sine vibration test is performed and compared to the results of finite element analysis.

  • Development and verification of whole vibration test system was requested for developing a geostationary satellite. This satellite is enlarged significantly compared with fore-satellite in KARI. For vertical vibration test, new vertical vibration system was developed. For lateral vibration test, thermal equilibrium test was performed because of difference of thermal characteristics between test adapter and slip table. And lateral vibration system performance for overturning moment was verified by analysis and test. As the number of acquisition channels was increased, new shaker control and data acquisition system was installed. In this paper, verification process and techniques to improve test stability are introduced for the whole vibration test system.

  • This paper describes BAUSAT-2 orbital thermal analysis and preliminary design of thermal control subsystem. To design thermal control subsystem of HAUSAT-2, we have considered active & passive thermal control method based on basic theory and themal equilibrium equation. Using this result, suitable thermal control method and material have been selected. We have designed thermal control subsystem based on analysis of HAUSAT-2's thermal environments on sun synchronous orbit with altitude 650km, inclination $98^{\circ}$ and thermal distribution and range expectation of each HAUSAT-2's surface. Thermal analysis consists of system level, box level and board level analysis. We have completed system level and box level analysis. Till now, board level analysis of main heat dissipation board in progress. Thermal control subsystem has designed according to thermal analysis result. This design is to maintain all of the HAUSAT-2 components within the allowable temperature limits. In future, STM

  • A control system has been being developed by korean engineers for 500MW korean standard type fossil power plant with the advent of retrofit of old control system. Simulators have been used for digital I&C system pre-tests and validation tests in nuclear power plants. In this paper, the power plant simulator for control system V&V was developed in order to verify the developed control system prior to application to a power plant. The control models were developed using plant control system data, translator programs, and vendor manuals. The developed simulator was verified by steady-state test, load swing test, transient test and so on.
