  • The applicability of plate thermometer (PT), which feature simple installation and low cost, was experimentally examined in steady and unsteady-state fire conditions. An infrared radiation heater and a square burner with C3H8 as fuel were used as heat sources. The relative measurement accuracy of the PT was evaluated by comparing measurements made using a Gardon-type heat flux meter. From a practical point of view and in terms of measurement accuracy, the optimal size and thickness of the PT in steady and unsteady-state fire conditions were 100 mm and 0.6 mm, respectively. These results can be explained by the conductive heat losses and thermal inertia of the PT for different sizes and thicknesses. It can be also concluded that measurements of heat flux using the PT in conditions of faster fire growth rate than slow require considerable attention.

  • Water spray cooling has been widely used in a variety of industrial applications. The present study concentrated on quantitative measurements of the heat flux and heat transfer coefficient by water spray as it impinges on the rough surface of a hot steel plate at $900^{\circ}C$. A novel experimental technique was developed for a hightemperature heat flux gauge with a test block, cartridge heaters, and thermocouples that was used to measure the surface heat flux information on the hot steel plate for local heat flux measurements. The roles of the surface roughness on heat transfer are presented in this paper for well-characterized four rough surfaces with average rms roughness heights of $40-80{\mu}M$. The results show that the local heat transfer for rough surfaces is higher than that for a smooth surface. Heat transfer can be significantly increased by the presence of surface roughness elements, which can disrupt the thin thermal boundary layer. In addition, the heat transfer enhancement mechanism on a rough surface can be investigated by a different boiling regime.

  • In this research, we make the thin wall chamber to the measurement of heat flux of using a Kerosene/LOx liquid rocket engine's thrust chamber. The wall thickness is one millimeter. We measured outside wall temperature of thrust chamber by nine thermocouple. We suppose the system to the one-dimension unsteady state, and so the heat flux and heat transfer coefficient of thurst chamber are calculated using one-dimensional the transient energy equation by outside wall temperature. In this case, O/F ratio is 2.0, experimental variation is chamber pressure and we got the heat transfer coefficient of the proportion relation of 0.88 times for the chamber pressure.

  • In this study, the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) and critical heat flux (CHF) for a smooth and square flat heater in a pool of pure water with and without carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed at $60^{\circ}C$ were measured. Tested aqueous nanofluids were prepared using CNTs with volume concentrations of 0.0001%, 0.001%, and 0.01%. The CNTs were dispersed by chemically treating them with an acid in the absence of any polymers. The results showed that the pool boiling HTCs of the nanofluids are higher than those of pure water in the entire nucleate boiling regime. The acid-treated CNTs led to the deposition of a small amount of CNTs on the surface, and the CNTs themselves acted as heat-transfer-enhancing particles, owing to their very high thermal conductivity. There was a significant increase in the CHF- up to 150%-when compared to that of pure water containing CNTs with a volume concentration of 0.001%. This is attributed to the change in surface characteristics due to the deposition of a very thin layer of CNTs on the surface. This layer delays nucleate boiling and causes a reduction in the size of the large vapor canopy around the CHF. This results in a significant increase in the CHF.

  • The objective of this study is the estimation of the two unknown thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity by an inverse heat conduction analysis using the Levenberg-Marguardt method. One dimensional formulation of heat conduction problem in the model was applied. Two point transient temperature of test pieces and heat flux of inflow were measured under the high enthalpy flow environment. Estimated thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity by an inverse analysis were compared with the known values of graphite test piece. It showed the effectiveness of proposed experimental inverse analysis.

  • Two-phase flow boiling experiments were conducted in 15 micro-channels with a depth of 0.2 mm, width of 0.45 mm, and length of 60 mm. FC-72 was used as the working fluid, and the mass fluxes ranged from 200 to $400kg/m^2s$. Tests were performed over a heat flux range of $5-40kW/m^2$ and vapor quality range of 0.1-0.9. The heat transfer coefficient sharply decreased at a lower heat flux and then was kept approximately constant as the heat flux is increased. Based on the measured heat transfer data, the flow pattern was simply classified into bubbly, slug, churn, and wavy/annular flows using the existing method. In addition, these classified results were compared to the transition criterion to wavy/annular regime. However, it was found that the existing transition criterion did not satisfactorily predict the transition criterion to annular regime for the present data.

  • This paper describes a general design procedure of regenerative cooling system for liquid rocket engine(LRE). From this design logic, cooling channels are designed and fabricated. The measured heat flux from firing test is similar to the heat flux predicted by design logic. Therefore, proposed design procedure of cooling channel can be applied to real LRE system. Also the result of firing test indicates that soot from combustion products have strong influence on the cooling characteristics of LRE.

  • Daegu Solar Power Tower Plant of 200 kW thermal capacity was developed for the first time in Korea, 2011. Measurement of the heat flux distribution is essential to evaluate the solar energy concentrated by reflectors and to design a suitable receiver. The flux mapping technique, which uses a radiometer and a diffuse plate, is common for measurement of the heat flux distribution. Because the solar power tower plant has a wide concentration area, the flux mapping technique using a fixed diffuse plate is difficult to apply. Therefore, the flux distribution in the solar power tower plant should be measured by the flux mapping technique using a small moving bar. In this study, we measured flux distributions with the moving-bar system developed at the KIER solar furnace and evaluated its applicability for the solar power tower plant.
