  • The variations of temperature and velocity fields in a Hele-Shaw convection cell (HSC) were investigated using a holographic interferometry and 2-D PIV system with varying Rayleigh number. To measure quasisteady changes of temperature field, two different measurement methods of holographic interferometry; double-exposure method and real-time method, were employed. In the double-exposure method, unwanted waves can be eliminated effectively using digital image processing technique and the reconstruction images are clear, but transient flow structure cannot be reconstructed clearly. On the other hand, transient convective flow can be reconstructed well using the real-time method. However, the fringe patterns reconstructed by the real-time method contain more noises, compared with the double-exposure method. Experimental results show a steady flow pattern at low Rayleigh numbers and a time-dependent periodic flow structure at high Rayleigh numbers. The periodic flow pattern at high Rayleigh numbers obtained by the real-time holographic interferometer method is in a good agreement with the PIV results.

  • Maintaining low temperature is very important in operating HTS cable termination in which Joule heat is generated at current lead. In this study, numerical analysis using FLUENT is performed to find an optimized flow conditions for effective cooling of HTS cable terminal system using subcooled liquid nitrogen (L$N_2$) as refrigerant. The variables considered here are mass flow rate of L$N_2$, location of inlet and diameter of inlet and outlet. Simplified models are investigated under these variables. Based on maximum temperatures in the cryostat, the configuration for effective cooling of HTS cable was determined.

  • This study is on the thermal flow analysis to select an optimal shape of solar lamp bank. Solar Lamp bank is designed by the lamp bank design program based on point light source theory. The reliability of the program for lamp bank design is verified through irradiance variation experiments of a kind of lamp according to horizontal distance. Solar lamp bank facilitates heat distribution and satisfies the irradiance in the three wave length which test guidelines require. Among the 4 kinds of lamp bank, since lamp bank type D satisfies uniformity ${\pm}10%$ and also doesn't exceed total irradiance 1,232 $W/m^2$, type D is finally selected.

  • This paper presents a numerical evaluation of the launch dynamics and thermo-fluid phenomena for gas generator launch eject system. The existing gas dynamic model for launching eject body used ideal gas and adiabatic assumption with empirical energy loss model. In present study, a turbulent Navier-Stokes solver with CHIMERA mesh is employed to predict the detail unsteady thermo-fluid dynamics for the launched body. The calculation results show that proper grid number is necessary for good agreement with experimental data. The important effects for accurate prediction are a gap distance and thermal boundary condition on the wall. The computational results show good agreement with experiment data.

  • This study aims to explore the heat transfer and flow phenomena inside an instant water heater and the influence of the design parameters of the water heater on the heating performance was investigated by 3-D numerical simulations considering heat convection. The design parameters are the heating ceramic dimension, the power of the heating device, and the water flow rate. The results show that a reasonable space for the heating device is required to optimize the heating performance. It is desirable to design higher heating device as possible for a given electric power. There exists a critical water flow rate that best meets the heating performance. The change in electric power has no impact on the flow phenomena and heating performance.

  • The present study numerically simulates the flow and heat transfer characteristics of rib-induced secondary flow in a square cooling channel with staggered V-shaped ribs, extruded on both walls. The rib pitch-to-height ratio (p/h) varies from 2.8 to 10 with the rib-height-to-hydraulic diameter ration (h/$D_h$)of 0.07 and the Reynolds number of 50,000. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence model. Computational results show that complex secondary flow patterns are generated in the channel due to the snaking flow in the streamwise direction for all tested cases. In the range of p/h=5 to 10 the staggered V-shaped rib gives about 3 times higher heat transfer augmentation than the reference smooth pipe with high heat transfer on both front side and the area around the leading edge of the ribs, while the former cases give about 18 times higher streamwise pressure drop than the latter ones. However, for the thermal performances, based on the equal pumping power condition, the case of p/h=2.8 gives the best result among three cases, mainly due to relatively low streamwise pressure drop, although it gives relatively low heat transfer augmentation.

  • When a cold HPSI (High Pressure Safety Injection) fluid associated with a design basis accident, such as LOCA (Loss of Coolant Accident), enters the cold legs of a stagnated primary coolant loop, thermal stratification phenomena may arise due to incomplete mixing. If the stratified flow enters a reactor pressure vessel downcomer, severe thermal stresses are created in a radiation embrittled vessel wall by local overcooling. Previous thermal-mixing analyses have assumed that the thermal stratification phenomena generated in stagnated loop of a partially stagnated collant loop are neutralized in the vessel downcomer by strong flow from unstagnated loop. On the basis of these reasons, this paper presents the thermal-mixing analysis results in order to identify the fact that the cold plume generated in the vessel downcomer due to the thermal stratification phenomena of the stagnated loop is affected by the strong flow of the unstagnated loop.

  • The present study numerically simulates the flow and heat transfer characteristics of rib-induced secondary flow in a cooling channel with staggered V-shaped ribs, extruded on both walls. The rib pitch-to-height ratio (p/h) varies from 2.8 to 10 with the rib-height-to-hydraulic diameter ration ($h/D_h$) of 0.07 and the Reynolds number of 50,000. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence model. Computational results show that complex secondary flow patterns are generated in the duct due to the snaking flow in the streamwise direction for all tested cases. In the range of p/h=5 to 10 the staggered V-shaped rib gives about 3 times higher heat transfer augmentation than the reference smooth channel with high heat transfer on both front side and the area around the leading edge of the ribs, while the former cases give about 2.5 times higher streamwise pressure drop than the latter ones. Consequently, for the thermal performances, based on the equal pumping power condition, the staggered ones give about 2 times higher values than the latter ones with more uniform heat transfer distribution.

  • Conjugate heat analysis on a high pressure turbine stage including secondary flow paths has been carried out. The secondary flow paths were designed to be located in front of the nozzle and between the nozzle and rotor domains. Thermal boundary conditions such as empirical based temperature or heat transfer coefficient were specified at nozzle and rotor solid domains. To create heat transfer interface between the nozzle solid domain and the rotor fluid domain, frozen rotor with automatic pitch control was used assuming that there is little temperature variation along the circumferential direction at the nozzle solid and rotor fluid domain interface. The simulation results showed that secondary flow injected from the secondary flow path not only prevents main flow from penetrating into the secondary flow path, but also effectively cools down the nozzle and rotor surfaces. Also thermal barrier coating with different thickness was numerically implemented on the nozzle surface. The thermal barrier coating further reduces temperature gradient over the entire nozzle surface as well as the overall temperature level.
