  • An in-situ experiment was performed to evaluate the pullout resistance capacity of chains which is used as a reinforcement of reinforced earth wall. It was also considered that chain was combined with a bar or L-type steel angle by the transverse reinforcement member in the experiment. About 80 pullout tests were peformed with varying the lengths of chain(2.0m, 2.5m, and 3.0m), the combination of each transverse members(chain only, chain+bar, or chain+angle), and the vertical placement of reinforcements. In the case that uses a chain only and a chain combined with bar, the maximum displacement was about 150mm and load continuously increased to the ultimate tensile strength of chain, and then tension failure of chains occurred. But in the case of a chain combined with angle, the displacement decreased to about 100mm and so it was expected that this combination can constrain the displacement of chain. On the other hand, comparing the yielding pullout load measured in the field to that calculated by theoretical equation, it is shown that measured values are 1.2~3.0 times greater than those of calculated values according to the length of chain, normal vertical stress, and the combination of chain with transverse members. However, the difference in the increment of yielding pullout load between bar and angle is not clear but it appears almost the same increment. It is expected that chain can be safely used as reinforcements of reinforced earth wall, although a theoretical estimation of the pullout resistance capability of chain is too conservative.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop computational procedures for studying nonlinear soil-structure interaction Problems. In orders to study soil-structure interaction behavior, the finite element analysis for the strip footing subjected to both vortical and lateral loads, and foundation layer reinforced with sheet pile are considered, interface elements are used between the footing and the soil to model the interaction behavior The main analyzed results are as follows; 1. For the prediction of settlement and lateral displacement, the result due to interface element was evaluated larger then without interface element. 2. For the determination of ultimate bearing capacity, the value using interface element appeared smaller by 12%, which was safe. 3. The horizontal and vertical displacement of strip footing affected by the presence of interface element.

  • The three dimensional aspects of hydrodynamic impact are discussed. Theoretical and experimental results for a sphere and a cusped body are presented. The cusped body is axisymmetric and resembles the bow profile of a ship with flare. The sphere was subjected to both vertical and oblique impact angles while the cusped body experienced only vertical motion. Three dimensional calculations using normal dipole distributions and an equi-potentioal free surface are compared with experimental results. The theoretical boundary value problem was solved using a known interior flow. This procedure reduced computation times significantly. Comparisons between theory and experiment show that, depending upon the body shape theoretical estimates of the maximum impact force may be larger or smaller than the experimental values. But the theoretical estimate can be used for practical purposes.

  • In this study a traffic volume dependent displacement estimation model for Gwangan Bridge was developed using bridge monitoring big data. Traffic volume data for four different vehicle types and the vertical displacement data in the central position of the Gwangan Bridge were used to develop and validate the estimation model. Two statistical estimation models were developed using multiple regression analysis (MRA) and principal component analysis (PCA). Estimation performance of those two models were compared with actual values. The results show that both the MRA and the PCA based models are successfully estimating the vertical displacement of Gwangan Bridge. Based on the results, it is concluded that the developed model can effectively be used to predict the traffic volume dependent displacement behavior of Gwangan Bridge.

  • In this study, based on the correlation between traffic volume data and vertical displacement data developed in previous research using the bridge maintenance big data of 2006, the vertical displacement estimation model using the traffic volume data of Gwangan Bridge for 10 years A comparison of the performance of the developed model with the current applicability is presented. The present applicability of the developed model is analyzed that the estimated displacement is similar to the actual displacement and that the displacement estimation performance of the model based on the structured regression analysis and the principal component analysis is not significantly different from each other. In conclusion, the vertical displacement estimation model using the traffic volume data developed by this study can be effectively used for the analysis of the behavior according to the traffic load of Gwangan Bridge.

  • The failure phenomenon of overlaid concrete structures, such as surface crack and peel-off failure in the contact zone, was investigated due to temperature shock(rainfall). To investigate this failure phenomenon, the surface tensile stress, and the shear stress, the vertical tensile stress in the contact zone were analysed using the non-linear stress-strain relationship of material such as strain-hardening- and strain-softening diagrams. Rainfall intensity, overlay thickness and overlay material were the main variables in the analyses. It is assumed that the initial temperature of overlaid concrete structures was heated up to 55$\^{C}$ by the solar heat. With a rain temperature 10$\^{C}$ and the rainfall intensity of nR=1/a, tR=10min, 60min, the stress states of overlaid concrete structures were calculated. The result shows that only fictitious cracks occurred in the overlay surface and no shear bond failure occurred in the contact zone. The vortical tensile stress increasing with overlay thickness was proved to be the cause of peel-off failure in the contact zone. The formulae for relationship between the vertical tensile stress and overlay thickness, material properties were derived. Using this formulae, it is possible to select proper material and overlay thickness to prevent failure in the contact zone due to temperature shock caused by rainfall.

  • Static pile load tests were conducted on the two piles which comprised group pile installed in sand and the test results were compared with those obtained from load transfer method. Predicted load bearing capacity of the pile which locates center portion of the group pile was less than that from the load test and the reason is thought to be the densification of the soil due to the installation of the group pile. Predicted pile capacity of the API method, Coyle and Sulaiman method were 77%, 90% of the bearing capacity obtained from the load test, respectively. Comparing ultimate bearing capacities of the pile locating at the edge of the group pile, those predicted by the API method, Coyle and Sulaiman method were 1.1 times, 1.3 times of the bearing capacity obtained from the pile load test, respectively.

  • A series of model tests were performed both to investigate the load transfer by soil acrching in fills above embankment pils and to verify of the theoretical analysis. In the model tests, the piles were installed in a row below the embankment and the cap beams were placed on the pile heads perpendicular to the longitudinal axias of the embankment. The space between pile cap beams and the embankment height was focused as the major factors affecting the load transfer in embankment fill. When the embankment fill was higher than the minimum required height, which was about 33% higher than the radius of the soil arch proposed by theoretical discussion in the previous study, not only the soil arching could be developed completely but also the experimental results showed good agreement with theoretical predictions. The portion of the embankment load carried by model pile cap beams decreased with increment of the space between pile cap beams, while it increased with increment of the embankment height. Therefore, to maximize the effect of embankment load transfer by piles on design, the interval ratio of pile cap beams should be decreased under considerably high embankments by reducing the space between cap beams and/or enlarging the width of pile cap beams.

  • The nonlinearity of a cable-stayed bridge results from the large displacement of main girder due to a long span, the catenary action of cables and the flexural stiffness reduced by large axial forces. The dynamic behaviour of a cable-stayed bridge plays an important role in determining its safety. Especially, when the eccentrically moving load is applied to a cable-stayed bridge, the torsional vibration and vertical vibration are coupled and moreover the variation of cable tensions shows important dynamic characteristics. This dissertation presents a theoretical study and a finite element procedure for analysis of a cable-stayed bridge under a eccentrically moving load. Attention is focused on the dynamic behaviours such as dynamic increments of cable tensions and nodal displacements, with the variety of velocities and eccentricities of moving load. It is found that a moving load with eccentricity can have significant effects upon the responses; the torsion of bridge deck and the increments of cable tensions, according to the present results in this study.
