A three-dimensional analysis is required to interpret the drainage behavior of an improved ground with vertical drains, and the macroelement method enables efficient interpretation considering the three-dimensional drainage effect of vertical drains under two-dimensional plane strain condition. In this study, a novel finite element analysis program was developed by applying the macroelement method to the vacuum consolidation method used in ground improvement practice. The conventional macroelement method was used to calculate the amount of drainage from the vertical drain by setting the excess porewater pressure in the drainage material to zero; however, the program developed in this study was improved to consider negative excess porewater pressure as an actual vacuum consolidation condition. To verify the performance of the program, because of a comparison with the measurement values at the site where the vacuum consolidation method was applied, results predicted by the program and field measurement data showed similar settlement behavior.
In this study, characteristics of consolidation settlement of soft grounds adapting preloading method and vertical drain method were compared. A real measurement settlement is compared with predicted one by the future settlement prediction method like the Asaoka's method, the Hyperbolic method and the Hoshino method. A accuracy of predicted future settlement by the Asaoka's method is relatively higher than the Hyperbolic method or the Hoshino method generally. But in the area conducted with the vertical drain method, settlement prediction accuracy of three methods is similar unlike popular beliefs; Asaoka's is the better method for prediction than others. The study area is also confirmed by investigation of the drainage system after applying the change through the N values, soil physical and mechanical properties were investigated, and physical properties are improved.
It is very important to determine the consolidation rate of ground, depending on the progress of time in applying this vertical drain method. Various consolidation analysis solutions capable of forecasting the consolidation rate are being proposed at the moment. However, the degree of consolidation measured from site, has a considerable different from the degree of consolidation which was obtained by the analysis of vertical drain consolidation. This study aims at assessing the applicability and verfication of each consolidation analysis solution by comparing and analyzing the degree of consolidation measured in the field and the degree of consolidation based on the theoretical equation for the analysis of the consolidation of Hansbo, Onoue, Zeng and Xie used as the consolidation analysis solution before the beginning of construction, on the basis of monitored field results and site investigation data as to the deep soft ground in Busan area applied by PBD method.
To investigate the effect of drainage spacing and smear on the rate of consolidation and the efficiency of vertical drain method, a series of consolidation tests with a large consolidation chamber and special equipment for inserting mandrels were conducted. As the smeared region increases, total settlement in over-consolidated clay increases whereas apparent change in settlement does not appear in normally consolidated clay. Vertical drain generally accelerates the rate of consolidation, while it could also deteriorate the efficiency of vertical drain method even for the decreasing drainage length and spacing ratio.
The most of horizontal drainages, which is composed of the aggregates made of sand and crushed stone, are used to improve the soft ground. However, where the aggregates are used as the horizontal drainage, it often brings about the delay of consolidation. For this reason, the horizontal drain pipe system is applied to properly improve the soft ground using a drainage pipe instead of horizontal drainage. This system is direct drain method for disappearing the excess porewater pressure which is caused by placing of fill on the soft ground. The large-scale field test was conducted in order to evaluate the applicability and constructability of the horizontal drain pipe system. The settlement characteristics of improved ground with horizontal drain pipe system was observed. It is also compared to the conventional soft ground improvement method to confirm its effectiveness.
The vertical drain method recently being used in Korea is divided into the sand drain method, the pack drain method, the paper drain method, and the PBD method according to the drainage. However, these methods generate the disturbed zone called the smear zone when the drainage is penetrated into the in-situ ground. The characteristics of the smear zone generated cause the problems that the coefficient of permeability decreases and the consolidation time becomes longer than expected in the design. Although the size of the smear zone is a very important factor directly influencing the degree of consolidation, in the existing studies, the general value for the size of the smear zone proposed has been used in the design. However, the size of the smear zone proposed by the existing studies cause a loss of economical efficiency because of the inaccuracy of the design. Hence, in this study, the characteristics on the size of the smear zone were analyzed by carrying out the three dimensional numerical analysis and the method to determine the conversion size of the smear zone considering the change of the coefficient of permeability was proposed in order to consider the change of the coefficient of permeability in the actual design.
In the design of ground improvement using band-shaped prefabricated vertical drains (PVD), it is required to determine a reasonable equivalent circle of PVDs. In this paper, a series of numerical analyses on soft clay ground improved by PVD were carried out in order to investigate the resonable equivalent circle of PVD considering consolidation behavior of improved soft clay ground by PVD. The applicability of numerical analyses, in which an elasto-viscoplastic three-dimensional consolidation finite element method was applied, could be confirmed comparing with consolidation behavior simulated at the laboratory. And, through the results of the numerical analyses, consolidation behaviors of soft clay ground with elapsed time were elucidated, together with the equivalent circle of PVD considering consolidation behaviors.
Due to the growth in industrialization, potential hazards in subsurface environments are becoming increasingly significant. The extraction of the contaminant from the soil and movement of the water are restricted due to the low permeability and adsorption characteristics of the reclaimed soils. There are a number of approaches to in-situ remediation that are used in contaminated sites for removing contaminants. These include soil flushing, dual phase extraction, and soil vapor extraction. Among these techniques, soil flushing was the focus of the investigation in this paper. Incorporated technique with PVDs has been used for dewatering from fine-grained soils for the purpose of ground improvement by means of prefabricated vertical drain systems. The laboratory model tests were performed by using the flushing tracer solutions for silty soils and recorded the tracer concentration changes with the elapsed time and flow rates. The modeling was intended to predict the effectiveness and time dependence of the remediation process. Modeling has been performed on the extraction, considering tracer concentration and laboratory model test characteristics. The computer model used herein are SEEP/W and CTRAN/W, this 2-D finite element program allows for modeling to determine hydraulic head and pore water pressure distribution, efficiency of remediation for the subsurface environment. It is concluded that the coefficient of permeability of contaminated soil is related with vertical velocity and extracted flow rate. The vertical velocity and extracted flow rate have an effect on dispersivity and finally are played an important role in-situ soil remediation.

The implicit finite difference program was developed to evaluate the relationship between time and consolidation ratio within the zone of vertical drain effective radius. In the evaluation, the excess pore water pressure was considered to dissipate in two directions, namely, vertical and radial flow direction. To calculate subsoil stress increments in the soil due to multi-step embanking, the foundation soil was assumed to be an isotropic and homogeneous elastic medium and the initial excess pore water pressure was estimated by using Skempton's parameters whose condition is plane strain and elastic phase of pore pressure response within the soft ground. Regarding to the settlement estimation, immediate and primary consolidation settlements were calculated. The secondary or delayed consolidation settlement was not considered. Numerically calculated excess pore water pressure and settlements were similar to the measured data in situ. Thus, this method can be used to predict the time-consolidation ratio of each layer treated by vertical drain method.
