  • To evaluate the influence of the external force components on the littoral currents in the Gusipo beach, Jeonbuk, West Coast of Korea where a wide tidal sand flat developed, a coupled hydrodynamic model considered real time tidal currents and wave-induced currents was constructed in which the EFDC for tides and tidal currents, the SWAN for waves and the SHORECIRC for wave-induced currents were used as the hindcasting models. A series of field observations for tides, tidal currents and incident waves were carried out and especially to observe the littoral currents in the tidal sand flat, the GPS mounted and light weight drogues were used. Also wind data were collected from the adjacent weather station. To analyze the littoral current components, the numerical drogue tracking results considered real time winds, tides and waves were compared with the field drogue data. The drift speed of numerical drogues was reproduced as the range of 68.0~105.2% compared with the field data and the velocity error of main direction component showed a good result as -16.7~10.0%. As a result, in the mild slope tidal flat including wide surf zone, the tides and winds were the major affection component of the littoral currents, on the other hand, the wave-induced currents seemed the minor component when the incident wave heights were relatively small.

• Shoreline change of Haeundae beach was predicted by one-line model considering interaction of seawalls and longshore variation of wave height . Wave deformation was calculated by combined wave refraction-diffraction model . In this shoreline change model, empirical constants and offshore sediment transport rate are treated as calibration parameters, and the calculated results are in good agreement with the observed data.

  • Eight species belonging to three genera in the family Cynoglossidae of Korea are reviewed and provisional keys to species and genera are provided, with synonyms and their distribution. Among them six species collected from 1992 to 1993 are redescribed and figured in the present study; Cynoglossus interruptus, C. joyneri, C. robustus, C. semilaevis, C. abbreviatus and Paraplagusia japonica. Three species of Areliscus rhomaleus. A. trigrammus, and A. hollandi were considered as synonyms of Cynoglossus semilaevis, C. abbreviatus and C. gracilis respectively. Many tonguefishes inhabit commonly in the western and southern coast of Korea. And although Cynoglossus interruptus and C. abbreviatus are restricted only in the southern coast, C. semilaevis in the western and southwestern coast of Korea, Paraplagusia japonica occurs widely along all of the coasts of Korea.

  • In this study, we analyzed the erosion variation of beach area at Haeundae Beach after coastal improvement project using video monitoring system operated by the Coastal Erosion Monitoring (Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries). Haeundae Beach was well maintained and stabilized following large scale nourishment through coastal improvement project despite of seasonal fluctuations. However, multiple typhoons over the last two years caused beach stabilization patterns and seasonal fluctuations to lost equilibrium, resulting in rapid erosion. In particular, the sandy beach was eroded by typhoon Solic and Kongray in 2018 and failed to recover beach area in winter by seasonal fluctuations. And due to multiple typhoons in 2019, the beach area was reduced 9.5 % (12,607 ㎡) year-on-year. According to analyze the observed wave and beach area data in Haeundae, the tendency of erosion and sedimentation was influenced by seasonal incident wave direction for each section(west, center and east part). Therefore, to identify the causes of decreasing seasonal fluctuation characteristics and continuous erosion, hereafter, more precise monitoring of different factors are needed, such as the crest heights of submerged breakwater and its loss of function, and sand leakage to the outside around submerged breakwater.

  • Since 1970's, various satellite remote sensing technology has been developed and accumulation of observational data has been carried out, and coastal environment monitoring research is being conducted through analysis of relationship between satellite remote sensing data and coastal sedimentary environment. However, generation of coastal thematic maps by various national agencies are not included in the production of coastal themes using satellite imagery. In this study, we want to deduct the current problems through survey of marine spatial information provided by the government. The purpose of this study is to investigation the direction of the development of large scale coastal thematic maps by analyzing coastal boundary map, coastal topographic map and coastal sedimentary facies map.

  • In the Sumeunmulbaengdui Wetland Protected Area of Jeju Island, there exists a unique pond, a so-called 'Ohmi', which is likely to be an oasis supporting the wildlife and escaped-livestock. We exquisitely described the diversity and distribution of plant community of the Ohmi. Despite its small area, six syntaxa were identified: Sphagnum community of peat bog type, Nymphoides coreana community of the floating-leaf limnetic vegetation, Scirpus triangulatus community and Schoenoplectus hotarui community of the littoral zone vegetation, and Deinostema violacea-Eleocharis congesta community and Eriocaulon atrum-miquelianum community of the ephemeral vegetation. A zonal distribution of plant communities along the water depth was recognized. The Sphagnum islets regarded as a typical component of peat bog, in Korea were first described at the center of the Ohmi. We conclude that the Ohmi is a primeval keystone habitat of the Sumeunmulbaengdui intermediate moor with a less oligotrophic ombrotrophic environment.

  • The Gochang open-coast intertidal flat is located in the southwestern coast of Korea (the eastern part of the Yellow Sea), characterized by macro-tidal range, an open-coast type, and sand substrates. This study has investigated seasonal variation in sedimentary facies of surface sediments in the Gochang intertidal flat. In the four seasons of February, May, August, and November, 2014, surface sediments of 252 sites in total were sampled and analyzed along three survey lines. The surface sediments of the Gochang intertidal flat in 2014 consisted mainly of fine-grained sand sediments showing a trend in grain size to be coarser in winter and finer in summer. Based on seasonal wave and tidal level data recorded near the study area, it was interpreted that the seasonal effects of wave were stronger than those of tide as a factor controlling surface sedimentation. High waves in winter resulted in the coarsening trend of grain size in surface sediments, whereas, during summer time, the sediments became finer by relatively low waves. Spatial sedimentary facies of the Gochang intertidal flat in 2014 represented that seasonal deviation of the upper tidal zone was larger than that of the lower tidal zone, hence sediments getting coarser in grain size and poorly sorted in the upper tidal zone. From upper to lower tidal zone, the grain size became finer and sediments were better-sorted, showing smaller seasonal deviations.
