  • Since progressive collapse of tall buildings can cause enormous damage, it should be considered during the design phase of tall buildings. The progressive collapse analysis of tall buildings using finite element methods is almost impossible due to the vast amount of computing time. In this paper, applied element method was evaluated as an alternative to the finite element method. Reduced DOFs modeling technique was proposed to enable the progressive collapse analysis of tall buildings. The reduced DOFs model include only the part which is subjected to direct damage from blast load and the structural properties such as mass, transferred load and stiffness of excluded parts are accumulated into the top story of the reduced DOFs model. The proposed modeling technique was applied to the progressive collapse analysis of 20-story RC building using three collapse scenarios. The reduced DOFs model showed similar collapse behavior to the whole model while the computing time was reduced by 30%. The proposed modeling technique can be utilized in the progressive collapse analysis of tall buildings due to abnormal loads.

  • Progressive collapse is generally defined as a local failure of structural members occurring due to abnormal load which results in the partial collapse or total collapse of a structure. Unlike progressive collapse, explosive demolition is a method of inducing the total collapse of structure by removing all or portion of structural members. In explosive demolition the partial collapse of the structural members can be controlled at appropriate time intervals by blasting, to induce the progressive collapse of the structure and control the collapse behavior. In this study, a nonlinear dynamic analysis was carried out in order to apply the progressive collapse process to explosive demolition design of the RC structure. The occurrence of progressive collapse of analytical models was examined according to the number of floors, the removed column height and span length. For models that resisted progressive collapse, progressive collapse resisting capacity was evaluated.

  • Since the Ronan Point apartment collapsed in 1968, researches on the progressive collapse have been intermittently conducted, and the collapse of the World Trade Center twin towers made the researches active again. In the United States guidelines such as GSA (2003) and DoD (2005) were provided for design and analysis of building structures against the progressive collapse. In this study the progressive collapse-resisting capacity of steel moment resisting frames designed by KBC-2005 was investigated using linear elastic static analysis and linear dynamic analysis procedures suggested in the guidelines. The results showed that in accordance with the GSA guideline the moment frame designed only for gravity load turned out to be vulnerable to the progressive collapse, whereas the lateral load resisting frame designed for earthquake load satisfied the criteria for progressive collapse. However both systems sailed to satisfy the criteria of the DoD-2005 guideline.

  • In this study the progressive collapse behavior of a moment frame with infill steel panels is evaluated using nonlinear static pushdown analysis. The analysis model is a two story two span structure designed only for gravity load, and the load-displacement relationship is obtained with the center column removed. To obtain local stress and strain as well as the global structural behavior, finite element analysis is conducted using ABACUS. Through the analysis the effect of the span length and the thickness of the steel plate on the progressive collapse behavior of the structure is investigated, and the effect of the dividing the infill panel using stud columns is also studied. According to the analysis results, the thickness of the panels required to prevent progressive collapse increases as the span length increases, and as the number of panel division increases the progressive collapse resisting capacity increases slightly but the effect is not significant. It is also observed that when the infill panel is installed in only a part of the span the progressive collapse resisting capacity is somewhat increased.

  • Progressive collapse is defined as a collapse caused by sectional destruction of a structural member which links to other surrounding structures. Currently the design guidelines for the prevention of progressive collapse is not available in Korea. So, structural engineers have a difficulty in evaluating progressive collapse. In this study, the static and dynamic analysis to evaluate the methods and procedures are conducted using commercial analysis program for RC moment resisting frames. According to the study, DCR value of RC moment resisting frame system based on code in Korea is over 2 and it shows that it can't provide alternate load paths due to the progressive collapse. And additional reinforcement should be considered for the progressive collapse resistance. As a result of vertical deflection and DCR value of linear static analysis and linear dynamic analysis, the results of dynamic analysis were underestimated more than the result of static analysis. Thus, the dynamic coefficient value of 2 provides conservative estimation.

  • In this study, the prototype structure of seismically designed steel moment frame was analyzed statically and dynamically in order to demonstrate the applicability of energy-based approximate analysis with the dynamic effect of sudden column loss in the evaluation of the collapse resistance and a method for assessing the sensitivity to progressive collapse was proposed. For the purpose of comparing the structural behavior of buildings with different structural systems, the sensitivity of the structure to the sudden removal of vertical members can be used as a significant measure. The energy-based approximate analysis prediction for the prototype structure considered in the study showed good agreement with the dynamic analysis result. In the sensitivity evaluation, the structural robustness index that indicates the ability of a structure to resist collapse induced by abnormal loads was used. It was confirmed that the proposed methods can be used conveniently and rationally in progressive collapse analysis and design.

  • Progressive collapse analyses of high-rise buildings subjected to abnormal loading such as fires, impacts, earthquakes, typhoon, bomb blasts etc. are intended. However it is difficult to perform collapse experiments of the real scale building to determine the capacity of the structure under an extreme loading events. In this study, collapse behavior of a 15 story RC structure building loaded by external explosion pressures were simulated using Extreme Loading Structures (ELS) software. The standoff distance between the RC building and explosives of 1500 kg was 1, 2, 5, 10, and 15 meters. The explosive demolition analysis techniques based on removal of partial support structures following blast scenario was adapted to investigate the transition process of progressive collapse-local damage.

  • In this paper, reference erosion criteria value suitable for progressive collapse analysis of RC structure due to blast load is proposed. Erosion is fundamentally a numerical technique to overcome the problems such as large numerical errors or abrupt termination of analysis and previous study has been suggested value for blast analysis. But concrete has different stress-strain curve according to strain rate. Consequently, the erosion criteria for the realistic progressive collapse simulation were suggested by comparing experiment results and numerical analysis results. Finally, the real progressive collapse of Oklahoma Federal Building was analyzed by using the median value of two values. And as a result, the analysis result is the actual collapse of the well described.
