  • As a evaluation method of combustion stability in a liquid rocket engine thrust chamber, external disturbance devices are used. In the paper, the study on pulse-gun ignition tests for a combustion stability rating test of a thrust chamber was performed. Charging volume of pulse-guns was determined by confirming the intensities of the pressure waves from the ignition tests in the cold-flow conditions. While using same injector head, combustion instabilities were not encountered during 14 hot-firing tests without pulse-guns but combustion instabilities were triggered by pulse-gun ignition during 2 hot-firing tests. The results showed that the pulse-gun ignition test could be the evaluation method and could reduce the hot-firing test number for the stability rating of a thrust chamber.

  • The SRT(stability rating test) technique, which is indispensable for the development of a LRE(liquid rocket engine), essentially requires a development of a combustion test sequence as well as artificial perturbation devices. For the development of an indigenous SRT technique, several combustion tests of sub-scale LRE were performed to search a proper combustion test sequence. At first, a pressure-wave inducing device which is used for adapting pulse gun was designed and a cooling gas supply system for the pressure-wave inducing device was set up to prevent a malfunction of pulse gun. Through the several combustion tests which included cooling procedure of a pressure-wave inducing device, a proper combustion test sequence was found out. It did not make any significant disturbance at normal combustion process. Finally, an indigenous SRT technique has been developed successfully.

  • Stability rating of KSR-III rocket engine is conducted based on stability rating tests in the course of development of KSR-III rocket engine. Rocket engine is approved to have combustion stabilization ability when it can suppress the external perturbation or pressure oscillation with finite amplitude and recover the original stable combustion. Rocket engine in flight nay be perturbed with unexpectedly large amplitude and thus a designer should not only assure combustion stabilization ability of the engine but also quantify the stabilization capacity. For this, several quantitative parameters and their evaluation are introduced. To verify dynamic stability of KSR-III rocket engine, five stability rating tests have been conducted. Based on these test results, such parameters are quantified and thereby, the stabilization capacity of KSR-III rocket engine is evaluated.

Rocket engine in flight may be perturbed by unexpectedly large-amplitude pressure oscillation and thus a designer should not only assure combustion stabilization ability of the engine but also quantify the stabilization capacity. For this, principal quantitative parameters and their evaluation are introduced. To verify dynamic stability of KSR-III rocket engine, six stability rating tests have been conducted. • The present study describes the methods and standards for the combustion stability assessment of a thrust chamber and a gas generator as parts of a liquid rocket engine. The first method uses a statistical approach through typical static combustion tests and the second one a dynamic assessment identifying decaying characteristics of pressure fluctuations excited by a pulse generating device. Based on accumulated test results, it is concluded that the maximal values for combustion stability are 3% of a chamber static pressure with a Root-Mean-Square value of pressure fluctuations, and 10 msec with a decay time.

  • A series of combustion tests of a 30-tonf-class full scale liquid rocket thrust chamber under development has been carried out to verify its design. The test results revealed decent performance in the aspects of efficiency. The combustion stability is one of the most important parameters of liquid rocket engine in addition to the efficiency. Assessment tests of combustion stability must be accomplished to confirm the possibility of combustion instability due to spontaneous or external disturbances. The combustion stability rating tests of the full scale thrust chamber with temporary baffles made of stainless steel were carried out utilizing pulse guns to estimate combustion stability characteristics. The tests results show highly stable combustion stability characteristics. The outcome acquired from the present experimental study will be used to design an actively cooled baffle that can survive for the life time operation of the thrust chamber.

  • To optimize and limit the axial length of baffle in KSR-III engine, stability rating tests using pulse gun as one of artificial disturbance devices have been done. Decay time and other parameters for the evaluation of stabilization ability of engine to external perturbation have been analyzed to quantify stabilization capacity of engine, in other words, dynamic stability margin. If baffle does not cover flame zone enough which can be considered as collision region of injector, it wasn't be able to suppress external perturbation sufficiently. The limit of combustion stability margin of engine is assumed to be 50 mm length baffle.

  • This paper presents pressure fluctuation characteristics of a 30 ton-f class liquid rocket engine combustor. Combustion stability of the combustor was evaluated using the results 46 firing tests performed with a varying O/F ratio and chamber pressure. The RMS value of pressure fluctuation during the steady state combustion was less than 2.6% of the static chamber pressure, demonstrating static stability of the combustion phenomenon. The decay time of pressure fluctuation caused by forced disturbance of a pulse gun was found to be less than 3.5 msec verifying dynamic stability of the combustor.

  • Structural tests for the mixing head of a 75tonf class thrust chamber were performed to verify structural stability. The mixing head of a thrust chamber is loaded by high pressure with regeneratively cooled fuel and cryogenic liquid oxygen(LOx) as well as it transfers thrust load generated by liquid rocket engine. Therefore structural stability of mixing head is a very important factor to work without any plastic deformation or structural failure. In this study, two mixing heads were manufactured using different welding methods, Tungsten Inert Gas(TIG) welding and Electron Beam Welding(EBW) and evaluated a structural stability. The results of structural tests showed that the mixing head assembled by EBW can withstand the applied design load without any structural failures and be structurally more stable than that of TIG welding.

  • Application of combustion stabilization devices such as baffle and acoustic cavity to liquid propellant rocket engine is investigated to suppress high-frequency combustion instability, i.e., acoustic instability. First, these damping devices are designed based on linear damping theory. As a principal design parameter, damping factor is considered and calculated numerically in the chambers with/without these devices. Next, the unbaffled chambers with/without acoustic cavities are tested experimentally for several operating conditions. The unbaffled chamber shows the peculiar stability characteristics depending on the operating condition and it is found to have small dynamic stability margin. As a result, the acoustic cavity with the present design has little stabilization effect in this specific chamber. Finally, stability rating tests are conducted with the baffled chamber, where evident combustion stabilization is observed, which indicates sufficient damping effect.
