  • Combustion instabilities are caused by the feedback relationship between heat release perturbations and acoustic pressure oscillations in the combustor. Studies on the combustion instability in an annular combustor have recently received great attention due to the enhanced NOx requirement in aero-engines. In this study, a thermoacoustic network model was developed in order to calculate the acoustic characteristics for various modes in the annular combustor. The network model is combined with flame transfer function(FTF) in order to calculate the stability of the combustor. Numerical results are compared with measurement data.

  • KSR-III engine with film-cooled baffle was tested. The purpose of this test is to verify the effect of ablative baffle on avoiding combustion instability which occurred in the acoustic cavity case. The engine had expansion ratio of 5.04 and the test condition was design condition(oxidizer mass flow rate 42.04, and fuel 17.95 kg/s). In the test, combustion instability did not occur. So, the effect of film-cooled baffle on avoiding combustion instability was verified.

  • Experimental studies have been conducted to verify that the positive coupling between pressure oscillation (p') and combustion oscillation (q') of high frequency range is a prerequisite for the initiation of low frequency instability in hybrid rocket combustion. The post-chamber length and combustion equivalence ratio were selected as critical parameters to control the phase difference between p' and q', and p' amplitude in relation to the suppression of LFI. In the results, even if the post-chamber length increases, the phase difference between p' and q' maintains below pi/2, which is a necessary condition for the LFI development, but the amplification of RI (Rayleigh index) was substantially decreased leading to a stable combustion. In addition, results confirmed that combustion stability is achieved by changing the momentary equivalence ratio and/or by suppressing the positive coupling status of p' and q'. Thus, the periodic amplification of RI was identified as the middle path of the mechanism of occurrence of LFI.

  • In this study, combustion tests using liquefying fuels with fast regression rate were performed. The chamber pressure oscillation was analyzed and hazards of combustion instabilities were examined. In case of Liquefying fuel with fast regression rate, the amplitude of chamber pressure oscillation was increased compared to the polymeric fuels. However, the critical combustion instability can hardly occur in liquefying fuel. This is because the rapid change of inner chamber diameter limits the amplification of chamber pressure oscillation. The chamber pressure oscillation due to the large increase of fuel production and the vortex shedding in pre-chamber violently occurs during combustion using single-port axial injector.

  • For predicting eigenfrequency and initial growth rate of combustion instabilities in lean premixed gas turbine combustor, linear thermoacoustic analysis model was developed in the current paper. A model combustor was selected for the model validation, which has well-defined inlet and outlet conditions and a relatively simple geometry, compared to the combustor in the previous works. Analytical linear equations for thermoacoustic waves were derived for a given combustion system. It was found that the prediction results showed a good agreement with the measurements, even though there was underestimation for instability frequencies. This underestimation was more obvious for a longer flame (i.e. wider temperature distribution) than for a shorter flame.

  • Measurements of heat release are very important for controling combustion instabilities, which are closely connected with combustion instabilities. $OH^{\ast}$ images were acquired through a ICCD in this study, which were in use as indicating index of the reacting region, global and local heat release rate in the lean premixed combustion. The objectives of this study are to see the effect of equivalence ratio on global heat release rate and local Rayleigh index distribution. The local Rayleigh index distribution was acquired by information from central section of flame. This information was from the line-of-sight images which were inverted by the Abel de-convolution. In each condition, the mean value of heat release increased exponentially with equivalence for a periodic time. Local Rayleigh index distribution cleary showed the region of amplifying or damping the combustion instability as the equivalence ratio increased. This could provide an insight on the region of combustion instability and the structure of flames on the equivalence ratio.

  • Hot-firing tests were carried out using a mixing head with 19 swirl coaxial injectors and a combustion chamber with internal cooling channels. The propellants of liquid oxygen and kerosene(Jet A-1) were burned in a range of chamber pressures (59~82 bar) and mixture ratios (2.0~3.0). The temperature of water used as the cooling fluid was measured at the inlet and outlet of the cooling channels, and the heat flux was calculated. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of combustion instability on heat transfer in a subscale thrust chamber, and detect the temperature variation of cooling water. During several hot-firing tests, combustion instability was encountered which caused a 5~20% increase in heat flux. The peak heat flux took place in the initial stages of combustion instability.

  • In order to obtain high thrust at the beginning of the flight, the solid rocket motor with large initial burning surface area was designed and tested. From the static firing test, lower initial thrust was obtained compared with the expected thrust based on the internal ballistic prediction due to the negative erosive burning effect which reduced the burning rate estimated by APN Law. In addition, the radial mode combustion instability was observed with 8 fins grain configuration. This instability was removed after the odd number of fins were used.

  • Combustion stability rating tests under condition low pressure of a 75-$ton_f$ liquid rocket engine(LRE) thrust chamber were carried out. Mixing head with decreased number of injectors than that of the other but with the same mass flow rate to the combustion chamber showed self-oscillation instability in chamber pressure of 30 bar. The other combustion chamber with increased number of injectors showed that high frequency combustion stability was maintained under condition of same pressure, but self-oscillation instability was generated in chamber pressure of 20 bar which can be considered as stability boundary region of this mixing head.

  • Hybrid rocket combustion displays low frequency instability(LFI, 10~30Hz) at a certain condition. Vortex shedding in the post-chamber is suspected to cause the occurrence of LFI. This study focused on the visualization of flow image using light emissions from high temperature combustion gas. Results shows that combustion pressure oscillates at a frequency of about 18 Hz, which is in phase with oscillations of light emission. Since LFI is not a property of thermo-acoustic instability, this result suggested there exists a physical coupling of pressure fluctuations with light emissions proportional to chemical reaction. Also POD analysis shows that dominant symmetric spatial modes in the stable combustion shift suddenly into asymmetric spatial pattern with the appearance of LFI. Especially, the appearance of mode 3 is a typical change of flow dynamics in unstable combustion representing a rotational fluid motions associated with vortex shedding.
