  • Currently, flammable liquids account for more than 87 wt% of the hazardous materials in circulation in Korea, and paint products are the most commonly used mixed hazardous materials. Therefore, one of the most urgent and important issues is that we have to secure the safety for manufacturing, storage and transport of paint products. In this study we investigated and analyzed the domestic hazardous materials safety management method, the international GHS test method and so forth. We tested risks for a variety of oil paints and found a relation between the results. Furthermore, the risk test method and criteria adapted for domestic situation was presented. Paints were classified as hazardous or non-hazardous according to the results of the flash point test, the amount of flammable liquid or the UN-combustion persistence test. It was revealed from the test results of 6 kind of oil-based paints using different resins that they were hazardous materials with very high risks and belonged to the Category 1 or the Category 2.

  • Recently the interest in disaster prevention on super tall buildings is increasing. Especially in fire, against increasing of evacuation time due to high-rise, It is being tried to minimize the fire spread in building. Fire compartments using the fire-resistant wall and door, typical method to control the fire spread in buildings, delay the fire spread to other compartments and consequently evacuation time increases. But the existing provisions adjure only 2-hour fire resistance with maximum limit regardless of the super tall buildings, so this is a obstacle for research and development of the fire resistance wall in super tall buildings. In this study, we reviewed the fire resistance ratings of the wall, and presented the development directions for the fire resistance wall in super tall buildings considering fire resistance, construction and application of the wall.

  • The dimensionless extinction constants of smoke particles produced from burning of soy methyl ester (B100) biodiesel and ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuels were measured. To this end, optical measurements of smoke volume fraction with the aid of a He-Ne laser at 633 nm were compared to the simultaneous gravimetric measurements. The average value of measured dimensionless extinction constants at 633 nm was 11.8 for biodiesel smoke particles and 11.1 for diesel smoke particles, respectively whose values are very comparable withing the range of measurement uncertainty (${\pm}10.1%$). The analysis of Raman spectroscopy revealed that overall characteristics of light extinction between particles produced from each fuel may differ from each other.

  • In this study, instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to measure the concentrations of about 30 trace elements in airborne particulate (PM2.5) samples at urban area of Daejeon city located in the southwestern region of Korea. An inspection of the measurement data indicates that the distribution patterns of trace elements could clearly distinguish the elements with their concentrations ranging over five orders of magnitude. The mean values for Lu and Dy were found to be the lowest at values of 0.01 and $0.04ng/m^3$, while those for K and Fe showed the highest value of 671 and $653ng/m^3$, respectively. The results of correlation analysis showed that PM2.5 concentrations can exhibit much more enhanced correlations with the elements of earth crustal components. The results of factor analysis further indicated that there are no more than six factors with statistical significance, which may exert dominant roles in regulating the elemental concentration levels in the study area. Enrichment factor analysis supports explicit interpretation of results found by this factor analysis.

  • A 50 kW polyurethane fire in a compartment of 4 m ${\times}$ 1 m ${\times}$ 1.5m with large openings similar to a subway station was simulated by a large eddy simulation to investigate the fire and smoke control. The NIST FDS, which employed a mixture fraction combustion model and a finite volume method for radiation, was utilized. Distribution of temperature and smoke particles was compared with in the lower and upper corridors for three different smoke control systems, ventilation, purge, and extraction, starting in 5 sec from the ignition of the fire. For the given geometries, the ventilation system showed the best smoke removal rate and lowest temperature distribution in the both corridors. It was confirmed that the purge system is not recommended for a subway station since the smoke removal rate of the purge system was worse than that without a smoke control system.

  • This paper describes the smoke movement of a fire field model based on a self-developed SMEP(Smoke Movement Estimating Program) code to the simulation of fire induced flows in the two types of compartment space containing the radiation effect under smoke movement in room fire. The SMEP using PISO algorithm solves conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species, together with those for the modified k-$\varepsilon $ turbulence model with buoyancy term. Also it solves the radiation equation using the discrete ordinates method. The result of the calculated smoke temperature containing radiation effect has shown reasonable agreement compared with the experimental data. On the other hand, a difference of a lot was found between the temperature predicted by the SMEP with only convection effect and obtained by the experimental result. This seems to come from the radiation effect of $H_2$O and $CO_2$ gas under smoke productions. Thus, the consideration of the radiation effect under smoke in fire may be necessary in order to produce more realistic result.

  • For the safe handling of toluene, explosion limit at $25^{\circ}C$ and the temperature dependence of the explosion limits were investigated. And flash point and AIT (Autoignition Temperature) for toluene were experimented. By using the literature data, the lower and upper explosion limits of toluene recommended 1.13 vol% and 7.9 vol%, respectively. In this study, measured the lower and upper flash points of toluene by air-blowing tester were $5^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$, respectively. And measured the upper flash points of toluene by Setaflash tester was $41.5^{\circ}C$. This study measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659-78 apparatus for toluene, and the experimental AIT of toluene was $547^{\circ}C$. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence of the explosion limits of toluene is proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • Fuel spray nozzle has a critical effect on combustion characteristics. Mass flow rate and SMD(sauter mean diameter) were selected as design variables by using the experiment data of various types of duplex fuel nozzles for the swirl atomizers. The sensitivity of each design variable on the mass flow rate and SMD was analyzed and the uniformity of mass flow rate was investigated through the shape optimization of duel-orifice-type swirl atomizers. The design variables that have a little effect on the optimum design were excluded using the DOE(design of experiments) method, which enabled the optimization of sensitive design variables on mass flow rate and limit tolerance. The SMD of the research spray nozzle that was used in this study was found to be most similar to that of the calculation results using the Jasuja's SMD relationship. This study showed the specific characteristics of duel orifice type swirl atomizers and the optimization of these kinds of nozzle. This study provided the optimization design of mass flow rate and its allowable tolerance.

  • Recently in Korea, the interest for using window and window-wall in building picks up due to the beauty and utilization of space. But, interior space of the buildings shall be compartmentalized by fire resistance structures in accordance with the Korean building codes to prevent the spread of flame and damage of human life in fire. In case of installing non-insulated glazed window in compartment wall, the flame spread to adjacent space and the damage of human life by radiant heat can occur in fire. On this study, to confirm the risk of radiant heat for non-insulated glazed window in fire, the fire resistance tests were conducted. The temperature rise and heat flux on unexposed space was measured and analyzed.

  • This paper deals with the study of mechanical properties and impact energy absorbed by composites, made by using thermoplastic and thermoset as matrix, flax fiber and nanoclay as reinforcements. The nanoclay was sprayed on the fiber laminate directly after mixing with ethanol. This experiment designed by Taguchi method and have variable factors, i.e three types of fiber direction(F), three different nanoclay wt%(N) and three spray gun hole shapes(S). According to these conditions, composites were made and the optimum conditions were found to be F1N3S1, F1N2S1, F1N2S1 and F3N2S1 for thermoplastic, and F1N3S2, F1N3S2, F1N2S2 and F3N2S1 for thermoset which were matched with tensile strength, modulus, total impact absorbed energy and heat release rate respectively.
