  • A partly implicit/quasi-explicit method is introduced for the solution of detailed chemical kinetics with stiff source terms based on the standard fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme. Present method solves implicitly only the stiff reaction rate equations, whereas the others explicitly. The stiff equations are selected based on the survey of the chemical Jaconian matrix and its Eigenvalues. As an application of the present method constant pressure combustion was analyzed by a detailed mechanism of hydrogen-air combustion with NOx chemistry. The sensitivity analysis reveals that only the 4 species in NOx chemistry has strong stiffness and should be solved implicitly among the 13 species. The implicit solution of the 4 species successfully predicts the entire process with same accuracy and efficiency at half the price.

  • We had investigated thermal stability, Ignition temperature and fire gas for polyurethane foams used for manikin, cushion and interior finishing material. Decomposition of polyurethane foams with temperature was investigated using a DSC and the weight loss with temperature increase using a TGA in order to find the thermal hazard of polyurethane foams, and the ignition temperature of polyurethane foams according to species. We studied constant temperature among ignition temperature measuring methods. In addition, noxious gases for polyurethane foams according to combustion condition were analyzed using gas analyzer and GASTEC. As results, initial decomposition temperature of polyurethane foam used for interior finishing material was lower than those for manikin and cushion, and exothermic energy was higher. Ignition temperature of polyurethane foam of interior finishing material was $420^{\circ}$. All of combustion forms at $427^{\circ}$ and under were smoldering combustion, and it was combustion at $500^{\circ}$. As furnace temperature was increased, concentration of noxious gases such as carbon oxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen cyanide was increased. And nitrogen oxide at combustion condition($500^{\circ}$) was over 10 ppm.

  • This paper studied combustion characteristics of the sponge type sound-absorbing materials extensively used on building interior. To estimate of the combustion characteristics, we carried out combustion experiment of general type and incombustibility type sound-absorbing materials. And then to evaluate the suitability of the sponge type sound-absorbing materials, we measured heat release rate (HRR) and smoke density (Ds) of the sound-absorbing materials using by a cone-calorimeter. From the combustion experimental results, general type sound-absorbing materials were rapid burned simultaneously with ignition and the incombustibility type sound-absorbing materials had all gone out simultaneously with ignition. Measured results of HRR and Ds were not satisfied KS F ISO 5660-1 and IMO FTP Code, form the results, the sponge type sound-absorbing materials were ill-suited for using building interior.

  • This study examined combustion characteristics by selecting the fuel which have a different physical properties compared to gasoline in order to examine the effects of vehicle performance and environment depending on the physical properties. The experiment examined the combustion characteristic in the optimum ignition timing according to the physical properties change and the lean burn by performing control about ignition timing and air-fuel ratio for each fuel, and it was also evaluated the exhaust gas according to the experiment. We used a single-cylinder engine for the experiment, and tested for gasoline properties change by selecting a fake fuel that beyond the fuel quality standards in 석대법. As a result, in the case of the selected fuel showed a difference in Octane and distillation characteristics, vapor pressure and it was also found to unstable combustion, and leads to a large amount of harmful exhaust gas.

  • In this study, Burning Area Analysis Program (BAAP) was developed by using VOF method to estimate the burning area of 3D shaped grain. The parametric study of mesh size, burning rate and time interval for numerical calculation was conducted. The result of BAAP is compared with the one from commercial 3D modeling software. Also the internal ballistic analysis was performed using the result of BAAP. In order to estimate the burning area and internal pressure with time, Chemical Equilibrium Analysis (CEA) was conducted with a composition of reduced smoke propellant. As a result, the web-averaged pressure was 5.34 MPa which is similar to the published research result.

  • The thermal stratification effect has been thought as one of the way to avoid dramatically generating the heat from HCCI combustion. We investigate the effect of thermal stratification on HCCI combustion fueled by DME and n-Butane. The thermal stratification occurs in a combustion chamber of a rapid compression machine with premixture by buoyancy effect that is made of fuel and air. The premixture is then adiabatically compressed, and during the process, the in-cylinder gas pressure is measured and two-dimensional chemiluminescence images are prepared and analyzed. Under the thermal stratification, the LTR starting time and the HTR starting time are advanced than that of homogeneous case. Further, the LTR period and the luminosity duration under homogeneous conditions are shorter than the corresponding quantities under stratified conditions. Additionally, under stratified conditions, the brightest luminosity intensity is delayed longer than that of homogeneous condition.

  • $(Ni, Zn)Fe_2O_4$ powders were prepared through self-propagating high temperature synthesis reaction and the effects of initial zinc oxide powder size and oxygen pressure on the magnetic properties of the final combustion products were studied. The ferrite powders were combustion synthesized with iron, iron oxide, nickel oxide, and zinc oxide powders under various oxygen pressures of 0.5~10 atmosphere after blended in n-hexane solution for 5 minutes with a spex mill, followed by dried at 120 $^{\circ}C$ in vacuum for 24 hours. The maximum combustion temperature and propagating rate were about 1250 $^{\circ}C$ and 9.8 mm/sec under the tap density, which were decreased with decreasing ZnO size and oxygen pressure. The final product had porous microstructure with spinel peaks in X-ray spectra. As the ZnO particle size in the reactant powders and oxygen pressure during the combustion reaction increase, coercive force, maximum magnetization, residual magnetization, squareness ratio were changed from 1324 Oe, 43.88 emu/g, 1.27 emu/g, 0.00034 emu/gOe, 37.8$^{\circ}C$ to 11.83 Oe, 68.87 emu/g, 1.23 emu/g, 0.00280 emu/gOe, 43.9 $^{\circ}C$ and 7.99 Oe, 75.84 emu/g, 0.791 emu/g, 0.001937 emu/gOe, 53.8 $^{\circ}C$ respectively. Considering the apparent activation energy changes with oxygen pressure, the combustion reaction significantly depended on initial oxygen pressure and ZnO particle size.
