  • Contemporary architectural structures have diverse and complex forms. Such structural variety demands requisite performance from the connections in the steel structure so that the latter could resist a horizontal force, such as an earthquake. The connections are the all-important components that create the discontinuous form and that support stress concentration, determining the stiffness and toughness of the entire steel frame. In this study, a real-scale column-to-beam connection was constructed in the 600MPa-grade high-strength and high-performance steel, to test its behavior. Its material and welding characteristics were examined in this study, and its structural performance was analyzed by conducting seismic-resistance tests on the full-scale, cross-shaped column-to-beam welded connections with non-scallop, ordinary-scallop, and reinforced-scallop details. The weld ability of the high-strength, high-performance steel was also evaluated, and data regarding the seismic design for practical application were provided.

  • In this study, seismic performance of existing RC frames reinforced with steel chevron bracing systems was experimentally evaluated. For this purpose, the unreinforced base specimen and seismically reinforced specimens with steel chevron bracing systems were fabricated and tested. Both strength and stiffness of the reinforced specimens were targeted about 2-3 times larger than the base specimen. Test results showed that the stiffness, strength, and ductility of the reinforced specimens considerably improved than those of unreinforced base specimen. Therefore, the results from this study could offer the basic information on the developing design guideline for the seismic reinforcement of RC frames.

  • Masonry structures have been used throughout the world for the construction of residential buildings. However, from a structural point of view, the masonry material is characterized by a very low tensile strength. Moreover, the bearing and shear capacity of masonry walls have been found to be vulnerable to earthquakes. In this study, to improve the seismic performance of masonry walls, hexagonal blocks were developed and six masonry walls made with hexagonal block were tested to failure under reversed cyclic lateral loading. This paper focuses on an experimental investigation of different types of wall with hexagonal blocks, i.e. walls with different hexagonal blocks and with different reinforcing bar arrangements, subjected to applied cyclic loads. The cracking, damage patterns and hysteretic feature were evaluated. Results from the hexagonal masonry wall were shown more damage reduction and less brittle failure in comparison to the existing rectangular masonry walls.

  • In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate steel reinforced ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composites) column, which exhibits excellent crack control property and highly ductile behavior. Ordinary portland cement and high volume fly ash were used as binding materials in the mixture proportions for the purpose of achieving a high level of multiple cracking property with the tightly controlled crack width. To compare with the cyclic behavior of steel reinforced ECC column specimen, a conventional reinforced concrete column was prepared and tested under reversed cyclic loading condition. Based on the cyclic load test, ECC column exhibited higher cyclic behavior, compared to the conventional RC column, in terms of load carrying capacity and energy dissipation capacity.

  • Four RC shear wall specimens with a/d of 2.2 are designed. And a flexural retrofitting is performed for one specimen by both enlarging wall section and adding additional vertical reinforcements. Also the effectivity of jaketting wall sides is evaluated for the two methods using only steel plate or welded wire mesh with enlargement of section. Cyclic loads are applied to the retrofitted specimens according to the loading history proposed by ACI under constant axial force. Test result showed that the strength and ductility of specimen were improved where the section was enlarged after the installation of additional vertical reinforcements. Confining the ends of wall by U shape W.W.F. with enlargement of section showed most excellent structural capacity regarding to the strength and ductility. Retrofitting by using steel plate was much effective not only to protect the abrupt decrease of strength after yield but also to improve the deformation capacity.

  • Nonseismic designed RC frame have a possibility of shear failure because of deficiencies of reinforcing details. To model the shear failure in numerical analysis, shear strength degradation models which Include Moehle's and ATC 40 are compared and applied to push-over analysis. For numerical analysis, three storied building frame is selected and designed according to Korean Concrete Design Code(2003). As results, It is shown that Moehle's shear strength degradation model estimates the shear strength lower than NZSEE model and has less variation than ATC 40 model and all the shear strengths of models are greater than the nominal shear strength of ACI 318. Also, from the numerical analysis, it is pointed out that there may be great difference in lateral drift capacity if a different shear strength model is used. And the capacity can be severely underestimated if the restraining model of plastic rotation of ATC 40 is used, compared to the use of shear spring model for shear degradation.

  • This paper summarizes the seismic performance of two shear walls with different reinforcement details in boundary elements. One is a special shear wall designed by KBC2009 and the other is a shear wall with improved reinforcement details in boundary elements, which is a newly proposed type of special shear wall. Experimental tests under cyclic reversed loading were carried out with two 2/3 scale shear walls which were modelled from the lower part of seismic-resisting shear wall in 22-stories wall-slab apartment building. The experimental results show that seismic performance of shear wall with improved reinforcement details was almost similar to that of special shear wall with respect to the moment-drift ratio. However, energy dissipation capacity and ductility were slightly different. Also, shear wall with improved reinforcement details in boundary elements satisfied the inter-story drift limit of 1.5% from KBC2009.

  • A Precast Prefabricated Bridge Column using steel tube and prestressing bar was proposed for the application of precast method on substructure. A column specimen designed by the proposed bridge column system was made and performed a quasi-static test. The failure mode appeared to be a flexural failure and there is no damage on column segment connection. And it is good use of the self-centering ability by prestressing force. Test results showed that a column specimen satisfy the earthquake specification, and the structural stability was verified. Nonlinear finite element analysis was performed and compared with the test results. Force-displacement relation and location of crack from the analysis results were compared with the test results and it agreed well. The quantitative analysis was also performed by a parametric study using this modeling technique.

  • Rock sheds are a type of rockfall protection facility that is installed on the road near steep slopes, where large amount of rockfall is expected. Rock sheds are generally designed to resist approximately 200 kJ to 3,000 kJ of rockfall energy. In a previous study, a new type rock shed structure having a concrete-filled tube (CFT) main frame was proposed. By using CFT as the main frame in a rock shed, rapid construction is possible. Additionally, high load carrying capacity and ductility can be achieved. The behavior of the proposed rock shed structure was studied via elastic analysis with the equivalent static load of rockfall energy as in a previous study. However, it is necessary to investigate the behavior of the proposed rock shed in more detail with a full 3D finite element (FE) model considering realistic rockfall load. The FE model for the CFT rock shed main frame was developed first in this study. Then, the resistance of the CFT rock shed main frame Under ultimate rockfall energy was investigated.

  • In this paper, the optimization of direct design system of steel frames by genetic algorithm involving advanced analysis are performed. For the analysis of steel frames advanced analysis accounting for geometric nonlinearity and material nonlinearity are executed. The genetic algorithm was used as optimization technique. The weight of structures is treated as the objective function. The constraint functions are defined by load-carrying capacities, deflections, inter-story drifts, and ductility requirement. The effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by comparing the results of the proposed method with those of other method.
