With the steady increase in the annual number of earthquakes in South Korea, the need to apply seismic reinforcement on public facilities has recently increased. To reinforce seismic capacity, spaced full-column-height steel bars are attached to column faces. In this study, nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted to analyze the effect of external reinforcement steel bars on the seismic capacity of RC columns with a square or rectangular cross-section. For verification, the analysis results were compared with test results. Results showed that the finite element analysis reasonably predicted the actual structural behavior of RC columns with steel bars. In addition, both the analysis and the test results showed that the failure mode was converted from brittle failure to ductile fracture, owing to the external reinforcement steel bars. Both loading capacity and ductility were increased as well. Therefore, the external reinforcement steel bar can effectively enhance the seismic capacity of existing RC columns. This study is expected to contribute to relevant research areas such as the development of design methods.
Precast concrete (PC) beam-column connections using ductile rods are proposed for earthquake zone. An existing beam-column connection, two PC specimens designed by considering failure modes and a conventional RC specimen were tested under cyclic loading to evaluate the seismic performance. The specimens were designed to satisfy the requirements of current design code. The variables are the yield strength of longitudinal reinforcing bars of PC beams. The test results showed that the proposed system applying smaller yield strength of the longitudinal reinforcing bars at the PC beams than the ductile rods was satisfied with seismic criteria. The deformation capacity and energy dissipation capacity of the proposed PC beam-column connections were greater than those of the existing DDC system.
The object of this paper is to determine appropriateness for use of high-strength tensile bar as a tension web member. The gap K-joint of tensile bar types were compared with gap K-joint of square hollow section (SHS) types. For the same width-to-thickness ratio ($2{\gamma}=33.3$ ), tests were performed on four specimens of the SHS type and eight specimens of the tensile bar type. The comparison of capacity with the experimental results showed a capacity of the SHS type joint to be higher than that of the tensile bartype joint for the same brace-to-chord width ratio. Moreover, the capacity of the SHS type joints increased proportionally to the width ratio ${\beta}$), while tensile bar type joints increased as the tension width ratio (${\beta}2$). In failure mode, SHS-type specimens showed local buckling of the compression brace and plastic failure was observed between the tension brace and chord face, and with the tensile bar type specimens there appeared punching shear failure of the chord face at the toe of the connection plate. It is, therefore, concluded that width-to-thickness ratio should be lower than that of the hollow-section type and the relation between tension and compression width ratio should be considered.

A Precast Prefabricated Bridge Column using steel tube and prestressing bar was proposed for the application of precast method on substructure. A column specimen designed by the proposed bridge column system was made and performed a quasi-static test. The failure mode appeared to be a flexural failure and there is no damage on column segment connection. And it is good use of the self-centering ability by prestressing force. Test results showed that a column specimen satisfy the earthquake specification, and the structural stability was verified. Nonlinear finite element analysis was performed and compared with the test results. Force-displacement relation and location of crack from the analysis results were compared with the test results and it agreed well. The quantitative analysis was also performed by a parametric study using this modeling technique.

This study examined the structural effectiveness of the unbonded technique originally developed for seismic strengthening of unreinforced masonry walls on the basis of the prestressed steel bars and glass fiber (GF) grids. The masonry walls were strengthened by using individual steel bars or GF grids and their combination. Test results showed that the proposed technique was favorable in enhancing the strength, stiffness, and ductility of the masonry walls. When compared with the lateral load capacity, stiffness at the ascending branch of the lateral load-displacement curve, and energy dissipation capacity of the unstrengthened control wall, the increasing ratios were 110%, 120%, and 360%, respectively, for the walls strengthened with the individual GF grids, 140%, 130%, and 510%, respectively, for the walls strengthened with the individual steel bars, and 160%, 130%, and 840%, respectively, for the walls strengthened with the combination of steel bars and GF grids. The measured lateral load capacities of masonry walls strengthened with the developed technique were in relatively good agreement with the predictions by the equations proposed by Yang et al. Overall, the developed technique is quite promising in enhancing the seismic performance of unreinforced masonry walls.

The use of precast concrete segments facilitates quality control and reduces construction cost and period. However, as a construction method it has limited applicability, for it demonstrates structurally disadvantageous behaviors due to stress concentration and large displacement in the joint of assembled segments. This paper proposes a precast segment joint with improved structural performance, and experimentally assesses the structural performance of the proposed joint in terms of crack and failure modes, deformation, maximum load and displacement ductility. In consideration of constructability and structural performance, this paper suggests different types of joint with shear key, post tension and steel rods as variables, and performs a static loading test on them. The test results show that the performance of SGSP specimens is around 84% that of a monolithic specimen in terms of the maximum load, while their ductility behaviors are better than the monolithic specimen. This result confirms the improved structural performance and applicability of the proposed joint.
Recently, for more demands of the economical benefits and environmental conservation, many engineers prefer to choose remodeling. Artificial openings are often unavoidable to make house wider, which will degrade wall strength and stiffness by losing effective wall section that may cause the weakening of system capacity. In these cases the damaged shear walls need to be retrofitted by additional materials or members. In this research, four specimens were tested to investigate the capacity of the damaged wall and the retrofitted wall. The artificially damaged wall was prestressed by tendons to improve the shear capacity of the wall, and the other walls were retrofitted by adding steel plate at the surface for the same purpose. Consequently, these retrofitted walls had improved capacity and stiffness in both shear and flexure. Especially, the wall with steel plate showed ductile behavior after ultimate load and the prestressed wall had greater stiffness than the unstrengthened prototype wall.
Compared with the traditional RC system, precast stairs can save construction time, reduce the cost of concrete casting, etc. This paper focuses on an investigation of improved continuous longitudinal joint details for PC stair systems. The performance of the precast concrete stair connections subjected to displacement control cyclic loading is compared with that of the monolithic connection. The developed connection is composed of U-rods and clamp joint metals. This paper proposes precast stair connection with improved structural performance and experimentally evaluates the structural performance of the proposed joints in terms of maximum load, displacement ductiliy, strain, crack and failure modes.

This study, as basic research which was intended to develope the surface reinforcement method using reinforcement material which is applicable to very soft ground in Korea, was aimed at proposing Bearing Capacity Evaluation method for the surface ground improvement method. To that end, a wide width tensile test using geotextile, geogrid and steel bar (substitute for bamboo) and 21 kinds of the laboratory model tests with the end restraint conditions of the reinforcement that comprises the constrained and partially constrained (3 types) conditions were conducted. According to result of tests, Terzaghi's bearing capacity method is adequate to calculate bearing capacity in non-stiff material(geotextile, geogrid). But, It can't adequate to stiff material(bamboo net). So, New bearing capacity method suggest surface reinforcement method of very soft ground which Terzaghi's bearing capacity method modify for effect of stiffness.

Quasi-static tests were conducted to evaluate structural performance of precast piers prestressed by bonded prestressing steels. Combinations of prestressing bars and normal reinforcing bars, embedded steel tubes and prestressing strands were used as continuous steels crossing the joints of a precast pier. Main design parameters were steel ratio, magnitude of prestress force, and section details. Flexural strength and energy dissipation capacity of precast columns with higher steel ratio showed better performance due to continuous steels after opening of the joints. Precast piers with embedded members showed stable behavior after reaching maximum loads resulting in higher displacement ductility and energy dissipation capacity increased as the introduced prestress increased. Self-centering behavior at early stages and stress increase of confining reinforcements were observed from highly prestressed columns. Combination of prestressing steels and normal reinforcing bars should be used in design to prevent rapid strength degradation after reaching the maximum load.
