Improvement of Fuel Economy in a Diesel Engine by Application of Low Pressure EGR System (디젤 엔진의 연비 향상을 위한 저압 배기재순환 시스템의 적용에 관한 연구)

  • LP(low pressure)-EGR system was investigated to evaluate its potential on fuel economy improvement and NOx emission reduction in a diesel engine. A diesel engine was tested for the evaluation of LP-EGR system at both of steady-state and transient test. For a transient test, control logic for LP-EGR valve operation was developed and a NEDC mode test was conducted by using a vehicle status simulation test. The steady-state results showed that LP-EGR system can reduce more NOx emission or fuel consumption comparing to the conventional HP(high pressure)-EGR. From the NEDC mode test, this LP-EGR system showed a possibility to improve fuel economy without a penalty of emissions.

  • In this study, an experiment on an air conditioning test bench was performed to verify the possibility of fuel economy simulation for the SC03 mode, North America fuel economy certification mode with a/c on condition, one of the vehicle fuel economy evaluation modes. The air conditioning test bench used in this study had each chamber simulating the actual vehicle air conditioning system and the controlling temperature, humidity, and air flow velocity to reproduce environmental conditions. Reliable results were obtained about the compressor RPM and inlet air velocity in front of the condenser corresponding to vehicle speed and air velocity in front of the vehicle, respectively, in the simulation of the SC03 mode, previously performed in CWT, in an air conditioning test bench. It was also discovered that there was a distinct difference in the fuel economy depending on the difference in the compressor displacement in the simulation test of the SC03 mode in the air conditioning test bench under various displacement conditions of the compressor.

  • Although the number of registered cars in South Korea is about 22million but, there is no national standard for automobile reference fuel in South Korea. Reference fuel is the fuel used for certificating vehicle performance, emissions and fuel economy. Now, domestic market fuels are used as reference fuel. However, the quality of domestic market fuel is constantly changing by seasonal and fuel manufacturers. It may effect vehicle performance, emissions and fuel efficiency test result. On this study, market diesel fuel quality was monitored and reference fuel standard(draft) was set by reflecting market fuel monitoring result. Reference fuel standard(draft) was applied to CRDI engine.

  • 여기서는 차량의 구동 성능을 예측하기 위하여 대우자동차에서 최근에 개발한 프로그램에 대하여 설명하고자 한다. 이 프로그램의 특징으로는 기능의 다양화 및 사용의 편리함을 들 수 있다. 이 프로그램은 수동 및 자동 변속기 장착 차량의 가속 성능과 연비를 예측할 수 있게 하였다. 정속 주행 시험과 같이 일정 속도의 주행 상태와, 가속 성능 시험에서와 같이 정해진 드로틀개도 변화에 따르는 주행 상태뿐 아니라, LA-4모두, Tokyo-10모드와 같이 시간에 따라 변화하는 속 도에 따른 주행 상태의 시뮬레이션도 가능하게 하였다. 주행 저항 계산방법으로는 풍동시험을 이용한 방법뿐 아니라 타행 (Coastdown) 시험을 이용하는 방법을 추가하였다. 예측 결과의 정 확도에 별로 영향을 주지않는 부분은 단순화시켜 모델링함으로써 입력 데이터 수를 작게 하였고 이로 인하여 사용자의 편리성을 높게 하였다.

Fuel Consumption and CO2 Characteristics of HCNG Bus (HCNG 버스의 연비와 CO2 배출특성)

  • For the HCNG bus using fuel which is the mixture gas of hydrogen and natural gas, the fuel efficiency and $CO_2$ emission characteristics were analyzed based on the WHVC test results and compared with that of the CNG and diesel buses. $CO_2$ emission characteristics were also analyzed by contribution effects such as carbon emission factor and fuel consumption. As a result, the fuel economy of HCNG bus was evaluated to be 11.5% improvement compared to CNG bus, and it was also showed equivalent to diesel bus. In addition, the $CO_2$ emission of HCNG bus was reduced 20.4% and 34.5% compared to CNG bus and diesel bus respectively. It was concluded that the $CO_2$ emission characteristics were influenced by the carbon emission factor depending on fuel composition and the fuel consumption according to the engine performance.

  • A vehicle fuel economy is very important issue in the view of fuel cost and environmental regulation. The fuel economy is much improved according to the development of electric, electronic and mechanical technology, but up to now the measurement of it tests the given mode(LA-4, FTP-75, etc) within computer simulation program and engine dynamometer. This fuel economy is different with it of real road. The one of main reason is not considered the gradient of the road. To estimate the effects of fuel economy at highway with gradient in this paper, we measure the amount of fuel consumption and calculate the fuel economy of it with running the Youngdong highway with high gradient. Also this paper analysis and compares the fuel economy with gradient and without gradient when the vehicle runs the same driveway. Then we calculate the total energy created the difference of fuel consumption amount of the two cases and calculate the consumpted energy by tire driving force from the torque and power of engine in the simulation. This paper verifies the relation of the driving force and the total energy by creating the difference of fuel consumption amount. This paper also proposes the method of fuel economy improvement despite of gradient at the result.

  • A vehicle fuel economy is very important issue in view of fuel cost and environmental regulation. The technology development for the fuel economy improvement improved the engine, power train and many components of vehicle. So, the fuel economy is much improved, but up to now the measurement of it tests the given mode(LA-4, FTP-75, etc) within computer simulation program and engine dynamo. In this paper, to deduct the method of its improvement of real road, the test vehicle ran 213Km Youngdong real highway using 3 different algorithms in computer simulation. For this, I extracted the distance and altitude data from received GPS data and calculated the grade angle, road load and accomplished the velocity profiles according to algorithms in all 213Km distance. The vehicle runs in computer with AVL Cruise simulation program using velocity profile. I calculate the fuel economy using AVL Cruise simulation result and propose the Eco-driving method of them.

  • Recently, the nano-PM's number concentration emitted by diesel internal combustion engine has focused on attention because this particulate matters are suspected being hazardous of human health. In this study, The nano-PM mass and size of diesel passenger vehicles were measured on chassis dynamometer test bench. The particulate matters(PM) emissions of these vehicles were investigated by number concentration too. A condensation particle counter(CPC) system was applied to measure the particle number and size concentration of diesel exhaust particles at the end of dilution tunnel along the NEDC(ECE15+EUDC) and CVS-75 vehicle test mode. As the research result, the characteristic of vehicle test mode on the diesel nano-particle number and size distribution was investigated in this study.

  • This study examined the combustion characteristics and emissions, fuel economy, acceleration by selecting the two fuel with octane number difference to investigate the effect on the combustion characteristics and performance of the vehicle according to the octane number. First, a single-cylinder engine was used for the combustion characteristic experiment, Of the fuel, which is distributed on the market by the selection of two different octane fuel it is performed experiments. Single cylinder experiment examined the combustion characteristics that appear when you gradually advancing the ignition timing by the ignition timing and air-fuel ratio control for each fuel and through an output, emissions, pressure, hence examined the correlation between by octane number. In addition through the actual vehicle compared the changes in the fuel octane number difference, through acceleration tests examined the impact of the octane number requirements for high-performance segment. As a result, fuel of high octane number in accordance with the ignition timing the advancing showed a slightly stable combustion characteristics, a slight increase occurred in the acceleration test and power. However, both fuel does not significantly differ from the current mode, simulating the urban and highway fuel efficiency. Therefore, the operating conditions of the vehicle currently being sold on the Effects of high-octane fuel. fuel efficiency was found insufficient.

Reference fuel is the fuel used for certificating vehicle performance, emissions and fuel economy. Now, domestic market fuels are used as reference fuel. However, the quality of domestic market fuel is constantly changing by seasonal and fuel manufacturers. It may effect vehicle performance, emissions and fuel efficiency test result. On this study, market fuel quality was monitored and reference fuel standard(draft) was set by reflecting market fuel monitoring result. Reference fuel standard(draft) was applied to GDI and MPI engine. As a result, the difference of fuel economy between fuels meeting the reference fuel standards(draft) was reduced to 1.1% while the difference of fuel economy between market fuels was 3.8%.
