Nonthermal Plasma-assisted Diesel Reforming and Injection of the Reformed Gas into a Diesel Engine for Clean Combustion (디젤의 청정연소를 위한 저온 플라즈마 연료개질 및 개질가스의 디젤엔진 첨가에 관한 연구)

  • A nonthermal plasma-assisted fuel reformer was developed and the effects of operating variables on the performance of this reformer were studied. The $H_2$-rich reformed gas from the reformer was injected into a diesel engine under an idle condition and the effects of the amount of injected gas on the NO and soot reduction were investigated. It was found that with increasing electric power consumption, the degree of facility of ignition of the reforming reaction in the reformer could be enhanced. The performance of the reformer including $H_2$ concentration, $H_2$ recovery, and energy conversion was affected only by the O/C mole ratio. This was because the equilibrium reaction temperature was governed by the O/C mole ratio. With increasing O/C mole ratio, the $H_2$ recovery and energy conversion passed through the maximum values of 33.4% and 66%, respectively, at an O/C mole ratio between 1.2 and 1.5. The reason why the $H_2$ recovery and energy conversion increased with increasing O/C mole ratio when the O/C mole ratio was lower than $1.2{\sim}1.5$ appeared to be that the complete oxidation reaction occurred more enough with increasing O/C mole ratio in this low O/C mole ratio range and accordingly the reaction temperature increased. Whereas the reason why the $H_2$ recovery and energy conversion decreased with increasing O/C mole ratio when the O/C mole ratio was higher than $1.2{\sim}1.5$ appeared to be that the complete oxidation reaction was further advanced and the $H_2$ recovery and energy conversion decreased. As the weight ratio of reformed diesel to total diesel which entered the diesel engine was increased to $18.2{\sim}23.5%$, NO and soot reduction efficiencies increased and reached as values high as 68.5% and 23.5%, respectively.

Effect of fuel injection timing and pressure on the combustion and spray behavior characteristics of diesel fuel for naval vessel (연료분사시기와 압력이 함정용 디젤연료의 분무 및 연소특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this work focuses on the analysis of injection rate and macroscopic spray behavior characteristics with injection pressures as well as combustion and exhaust emission characteristics with injection timing and injection pressure by using a common rail single-cylinder diesel engine. The injection rate was measured by applying the Bosch method, and macroscopic spray behavior characteristics were analyzed with a constant-volume vessel and a high-speed camera. In addition, combustion and emission characteristics were analyzed in a common-rail single-cylinder diesel engine with precise control of fuel injection timing and pressure. For injection pressures of 30MPa and 50MPa, the injection rate was higher at 50 MPa, and the spray development (penetration) was also higher in the same elapsed time. The peak in-cylinder pressure and rate of heat release showed a tendency to decline as injection timing was delayed, and the peak in-cylinder pressure and rate of heat release were slightly higher for higher injection pressures. Higher injection pressures also reduced the mean effective pressure, while the indicated mean effective pressure and torque increased as injection timing was delayed to TDC. Nitrogen oxides had a peak level at injection timings of $BTDC20^{\circ}$(30MPa) and $BTDC15^{\circ}$(50MPa); carbon monoxide emissions were reduced by delaying injection timing from $BTDC30^{\circ}$.

  • 전 세계적으로 환경문제를 해결하기 위한 방안으로 환경규제를 강화시키며 특히 다양한 대기오염 물질 중 최근 큰 이슈인 초미세먼지 저감을 위해 전구물질로 알려진 질소산화물을 제어하기 위한 다양한 기술개발이 가속화되고 있다. 특히, 다양한 처리기술 중에 기술적·경제적인 이점을 갖춘 선택적 촉매환원법(selective catalytic reduction, SCR) 기술을 통하여 질소산화물 제거를 위해 암모니아를 환원제로 반응에 참여시켜 인체에 무해한 H2O, N2로 전환하는 기술이 대표적이다. 최근 전 세계적으로 다양한 산업군에서 질소산화물이 배출되고 있으며, 점오염원뿐만이 아니라 비점오염원(mobile sources)에 대한 규제가 강화되고 있다. 디젤엔진이 장착된 선박 배가스 처리장치 내 SCR 기술이 주목을 받고 있으며, NH3-SCR에 사용되는 촉매는 주로 VOx/TiO2, VOx/W/TiO2 촉매가 대표적이다. 한편 선박 디젤엔진에 사용되는 연료에 따라 연소배가스 특성이 다르다. 이러한 연료가 연소됨에 따라 SO2, SO3가 발생되고 환원제인 NH3와 결합하여 황산암모늄염((NH4)2SO4), ABS (ammonium bisulfate, NH4HSO4)과 같은 염을 형성시켜 탈질촉매의 비활성화 문제가 발생된다. 이러한 비활성화 물질이 침적된 탈질촉매를 재활성화 시키기 위하여 열 산화를 통해 재생시키고 있다. 이처럼 선박용 SCR 촉매는 강화되는 배출규제 및 엔진기술의 발달로 저감되는 운전 온도에 대비하여 저온 활성 재생이 가능한 고활성, 고내구성 촉매기술 개발이 필요하다.

  • 우드칩을 포함하는 화석연료대비 발열량이 낮은 바이오매스를 가스화를 통하여 활용하는 경우 타르 및 수트를 포함하는 저열량의 합성가스가 생성된다. 이러한 합성가스를 엔진을 통한 발전, 스팀, 수소 및 화학제품 생산으로 활용하기 위해서는 고효율의 타르 정제 및 제거가 필수적이다. 특히 착화가 어렵고 연소온도 및 연소율이 낮으며, 화염구간이 좁은 저열량의 합성가스를 이용하여 스팀을 생산하기 위해서는 많은 문제점으로 인하여 기술 개발이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 하향류식 가스화기를 이용하여 우드칩을 연료로 합성가스를 제조하였으며, 합성가스에 포함되어 있는 타르 및 수트와 같은 미반응 물질을 제거할 수 있는 집진, 세정장치를 설계 및 제작하였다. 특히 고효율 타르의 제거를 위하여 두 종류의 산화촉매를 이용한 합성가스 내 타르의 제거 연구를 수행하였다. Ru 촉매를 이용하는 경우 합성가스 내 타르의 농도를 100ppb 정도까지 저감이 가능하였다. 정제된 합성가스는 유류 혼소 버너를 통하여 보일러 연소실에서 혼합연소되어 30만kcal/h의 열을 공급함으로써 스팀을 생산 하였으며, 생성된 스팀은 블록 건조 시설에서 이용하였다.

  • Conventional UPS(Uninterruptible Power Supply) using batteries for assisting the source is limited by the large volume and the life-time of battery. Moreover, voltage variation caused by the sudden load variation brings the problems on UPS system output. In this paper, the battery using fuel cell which is environment-friendly alternative energy is connected on AC/DC converter for UPS to compensate the sudden load variation energy and make the stable power.

  • In this study, an automatic idle stop control system was developed, which automatically stops the idle state engine as it detects the stop state of the car for several seconds and restarts the stopped engine with the driver's electrical signal. It is composed of microprocessor and the related electronic circuits and communicates with ECU and TCU. With accurate and confirmed operating performance, the control system was equipped in the test car which was proceeded the ECE15+EUDC mode test. It is confirmed that the control system, ASG has much favourable effects on reducing the fuel consumption and harmful exhaust emissions.

  • This paper deals with a comparison of performance between tip rake propeller and normal propeller in P.O.W condition. In comparison with normal propeller, tip rake propeller is good at preventing occurring negative effect: tip vortex, etc. But, officially formulated information about tip rake propeller doesn't become known. So this paper makes design variables about rake factors and applies them to propeller geometry. And propellers applied design variables are compared with each other about open water propeller efficiency. Also this paper confirms a vorticity reduction at propeller tip.

  • To reduce the soot and NOx simultaneously, a new system of stratified injection is developed. This system discharges stratified diesel-methanol in a D. I. Diesel Engine. Nozzle and delivery valve of conventional injection system were remodeled to inject diesel and methanol from one injector sequently. The quantity of diesel and methanol was controled precisely by micrometers mounted on the injection control lack. The real injection ratio of dual fuel was measured by volumetric ratio. We could confirm the capabilities that soot and NOx simultaneously were reduced by diesel-methanol stratified injection from the results of in-cylinder pressure data obtained from combustion experiment by stratified injection, heat release rate and mass fraction bumed.

Trend for Performance Improvement of 2-Stroke Gasoline Engine (2-stroke 가솔린 기관 성능 향상을 위한 추세)

  • 내연기관 연구에 전념하는 모든 사람들의 한결같은 3대 염원은 연비향상, 비출력증대 및 유해 배기가스 성분 감소이다. 이중 비과급 가솔린 기관의 경우 비출력 증대를 위한 4-stroke cycle 엔진에서의 여구는 현지까지 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 연구가 진행되어 발전의 한계에 도달한 느낌 이다. 따라서 이의 실질적인 증대는 시각을 달리하여 2-stroke cycle로의 전환으로서만 가능하리 라 본다. 2-stroke 엔진은 원래 이목적으로 고안된 것이라는 것은 주지의 사실이다. 그러나 이 장치가 비출력면에서 효과적인 가솔린엔진의 경우에서도 현재까지 별로 각광을 받지 못한 것은 다음과 같은 몇가지 두드러진 이유 때문이라고 본다. 첫째 흡입연료의 일부가 소기(scavenging) 과정에서 배기공으로 곧바로 유출됨으로 배기 공해성분을 증가시키고 연료손실에 따른 연비저감 을 초래하는 것이다. 둘째로 crankcase 소기를 이용하는 소형가솔린 2-stroke 엔진에서는 새 공 기의 흡입이 충분치 못하여 일방적으로 높지 않은 소기효율을 고려한 최종 흡입 체적효율은 상당 히 낮아지게 됨으로써 목적하는바의 비출력 증대의 득을 별로 얻지 못함은 물론 잔류가스율이 높아 저부하, 저속도에서 엔진의 구동이 손조롭지 못ㅎ하고 시동이 어려워지는 특성을 나타나게 된다. 따라서 이러한 바람직하지 못한 결과를 감수할 수 있는 경우에는 소형원동기에 주로 2-stroke 가솔린 엔진이 이용되어 왔다. 요사이 이러한 약점들을 타개할 수 있는 고안들이 미국 SAE지에 소개되어 관심을 끌고 있어 이에 대해 요저먹으로 소개하고자 한다.

Advanced flame quality indicator for emission control (저공해 연소를 위한 화염진단장치의 특성)

  • It is very important to improve the combustion efficiency and reduce pollutant emission in order to save energy and environment. Especially, thermal NOx has been reduced through monitoring burner flame, because the thermal NOx is strongly related to flame characteristics. In this work, a flame-monitoring system was fabricated with photodiode, optical fiber, interference filter and data acquisition system, and it was applied to a lab-scale methane combustion system and a testing facility. Flame intensity and mean frequency increased with increasing turbulent intensity and fuel loading. The sensor signal from flame fluctuations differed from that without flame, which showed the availability af the flame scanner to find the presence of flame. NOx emissions increased with flame intensity.
