An Experimental Study on the Combustion Characteristics with Fuel Injection System in the Diesel Engine (디젤엔진의 연료분사계가 연소특성에 미치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The characteristics of engine performance with fuel injection system in D.I. diesel engine were studied in this paper A fuel injection system has an important role in the performance and emission gas in a diesel engine. In this paper, an experimental study has been performed to verify the effect of the performance and the emission gas with the factors such as diameters of an injection nozz1e hole, diameters of an injection pipe and injection timing in the fuel injection system. The authors have obtained the results that optimizing the factors of fuel injection system is siginificant to enhance the performance of the engine system and consumption ratio of fuel, smoke, and NOx.

Unsteady Three-Dimensional Analysis of Transverse Fuel Injection into a Supersonic Crossflow using Detached Eddy Simulation Part I : Non-Reacting Flowfield (DES를 이용한 초음속 유동내 수직 연료분사 유동의 비정상 3차원 해석 Part I : 비반응 유동장)

  • Unsteady three-dimensional flowfield generated by transverse fuel injection into a supersonic mainstream is simulated with a DES turbulence model. Comparisons are made with experimental results in terms of the temporal eddy position and eddy formation frequency. The vorticity field around the jet exit is also analyzed to understand the formation mechanism of the large eddy structures. Results indicate that the DES model correctly predicts the convection characteristics of the large scale eddies. However, it is also observed that the numerical results slightly over-predict the eddy formation frequency. The large eddy structures are generated as the counter-rotating vortices are detached alternately in the upstream recirculation region.

  • Liquid ramjet combustor is closely connected with complex phenomena due to a series of processes such as intake air, spray, mixing, and combustion. The present numerical experiments were peformed to investigate these flow characteristics for two and three dimensional liquid ramjet combustor. Grid system was made with three domains: intake region where air is supplied and fuel is injected, combustor and nozzle region, and exit atmosphere region. The numerical results showed that two and three dimensional flow patterns in recirculation region of combustor were significantly different each other and spray model was necessary to predict correctly the chemical reaction flow characteristics. Numerically examined for two different location of fuel injector, one is located on the bottom position of curved intake and the other is located on the top position. We found that bottom position of fuel injector is better than top position because fuel influx to the recirculation region which is need to sustain chemical reaction is more than the latter.

  • The use of emulsified fuel and EGR (Exhaust gas recirculation) system are effective methods to reduce NOx emission from diesel engines. In general, it is considered that EGR method influences diesel engine combustion in three different ways: thermal, chemical and dilution effect. Among others, the thermal effect is related to the increase of specific heat capacity due to the presence of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ in inlet air. Meanwhile, emulsified fuel method of utilizing latent heat of vaporization and miro-explosion has been recognized as an effective technique for reducing diesel engine emissions. In this paper, an author studied on combustion and emission characteristics by using emulsified fuel (EF, Light oil : 80% + Water : 20%) and EGR (30% EGR ratio) system. And the effect of fuel injection pattern control was investigated.

Numerical Study of Flow Characteristics in a Solid Particle Incinerator for Various Design Parameters of Injectors (고체 입자 소각로에서 분사기의 설계 인자에 따른 유동 특성에 관한 수치해석적 연구)

  • The flow characteristics in a solid particle incinerator are investigated numerically for high burning rate of wastes. The studied incinerator employs both a swirl flow used in the furnace of powerplants and a design concept applied to a rocket combustor. As the first step, the non-reactive flow field is analyzed in the incinerator with primary and secondary injectors through which solid fuel and air are injected. The deflection angle of a primary injector, inclination angle of a secondary injector, and gap between the two types of injectors are selected as design parameters. The swirl number is adopted for evaluating the degree of swirl flow and estimated over wide ranges of three parameters. The swirl number increases with deflection angle, but it is affected little by inclination angle. Recirculation zones are formed near the injectors, and their size affects the swirl number. The swirl number decreases with the zonal size of recirculation. From the numerical results, the design points can be found with strong swirl flow.

An Experimental Study on the Simultaneous Reduction of Smoke and NOx by Oxygenated Fuel Additives in DI Diesel Engine (직접분사식 디젤기관에서 함산소연료 첨가에 의한 매연과 NOx 동시 저감에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Extensive experiments were conducted to investigate the emission of DI diesel engine by using DMC(dimethyl carbonate) as an oxygenated fuel additives. The results indicate that smoke reduces almost linearly with fuel oxygen contents. Reductions of HC and CO were attained noticeably, while a small increase in NOx was encountered concurrently. The effective reduction in smoke with DMC was maintained with the presence of CO2, which suggested a low NOx and smoke operation could be obtained in combination of using oxygenated fuel and EGR. Further experiment was conducted a thermal cracking set-up for mechanism studies.

  • Recently, the world is faced with very serious problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions of the diesel engine. So, many of researchers have studied to reduce the exhaust emissions of diesel engine. This study was investigated for various exhaust emissions according to operating conditions in a turbocharged D.I. diesel engine. As a result of experiments in a test engine, the $CO_2\;and\;NO_x$ increased with increasing load, the $CO_2$ and CO decreased with increasing charge air pressure in manifold, the CO decreased with increasing cooling fresh water temperature, and the $NO_x$ decreased with worming cooling fresh water before engine start.

  • LPG has been well known as a clean alternative fuel for vehicles. As a fundamental study on liquid phase LPG injection (hereafter LPLI) system application to heavy-duty engine, engine output and combustion performance were investigated with various operating conditions using a single cylinder engine equipped with the LPLI system. Experimental results revealed that no problems were occurred in application of the LPG fuel to heavy-duty engine, and that volumetric efficiency and engine output, by 10% approximately, were increased with the LPLI system. It was resulted from the decrease of the intake manifold temperature through liquid phase LPG fuel injection. These results provided an advantage in the decrease of the exhaust gas temperature, in the control of knocking phenomena, spark timing and compression ratio. The LPLI engine could normally operated under $\lambda$=1.5 or EGR 30% condition. The optimized swirl ratio for the heavy duty LPG engine was found around R_s$ = 2.0.

  • This study researched on the effect of HP/LP-EGR system to improve fuel consumption of Low Temperature Combustion Engine. Firstly, low temperature combustion engine with HP/LP-EGR system was established using 6.0L wastegate turbocharger HDDI engine. And suppliable EGR rate of the engine was proven to be enough to realize stable low temperature combustion. Then, optimum operating strategy was founded to develop fuel consumption of the engine. Control parameters were HP/LP-EGR valve and IPCV(Intake Pressure Control Valve) duty. Experiments method was that characteristics of the engine were measured and analyzed according to HP/LP-EGR strategies while EGR rate was fixed. Operating range for the strategy were divided into three parts, low load for low temperature combustion, high load for conventional diesel combustion, and transient condition. Finally, with the above strategy of this study, BSFC of the engine was improved about 2% compared to the base engine, and emission level, NOx and PM, met Tier4Final emission regulation.

  • In this paper, the effect of oxygen component in fuel on the exhaust emissions has been investigated for an indirect injection diesel engine. It was tested to estimate change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for the commercial diesel fuel and oxygenated blended fuel which has four kinds of mixed ratio. And, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission have been investigated. Ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether(EGBE) contains oxygen component 27% in itself, and it is a kind of effective oxygenated fuel of mono-ether group that the smoke emission of EGBE is reduced remarkably compared with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficiently at higher loads and speeds in diesel engine. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with oxygenated fuel(10vol-%) and cooled EGR method(10%).
