Architecture and Depositional Style of Gravelly, Deep-Sea Channels: Lago Sofia Conglomerate, Southeyn Chile (칠레 남부 라고 소피아 (Lago Sofla) 심해저 하도 역암의 층구조와 퇴적 스타일)

  • The Lago Sofia conglomerate in southern Chile is a lenticular unit encased within mudstone-dominated, deep-sea successions (Cerro Toro Formation, upper Cretaceous), extending from north to south for more than $120{\cal}km$. The Lago Sofia conglomerate is a unique example of long, gravelly deep-sea channels, which are rare in the modern environments. In the northern part (areas of Lago Pehoe and Laguna Goic), the conglomerate unit consists of 3-5 conglomerate bodies intervened by mudstone sequences. Paleocurrent data from these bodies indicate sediment transport to the east, south, and southeart. The conglomerate bodies in the northern Part are interpreted as the tributary channels that drained down the Paleoslope and converged to form N-S-trending trunk channels. In the southern part (Lago Sofia section), the conglomerate unit comprises a thick (> 300 m) conglomerate body, which probably formed in axial trunk channels of the N-5-trending foredeep trough. The well-exposed Lago Sofia section allowed for detailed investigation of sedimentary facies and large-scale architecture of the deepsea channel conglomerate. The conglomerate in Lago Sofia section comprises stratified conglomerate, massive-to-graded conglomerate, and diamictite, which represent bedload deposition under turbidity currents, deposition by high-density turbidity currents, and muddy debris flows, respectively. Paleocurrent data suggest that the debris flows originated from the failure of nearby channel banks or slopes flanking the channel system, whereas the turbidity currents flowed parallel to the orientation of the overall channel system. Architectural elements produced by turbidity currents represent vertical stacking of gravel sheets, lateral accretion of gravel bars, migration of gravel dunes, and filling of channel thalwegs and scoured hollows, similar to those in terrestrial gravel-bed braided rivers. Observations of large-scale stratal pattern reveal that the channel bodies are offset stacked toward the east, suggestive of an eastward migration of the axial trunk channel. The eastward channel migration is probably due to tectonic tilting related to the uplift of the Andean protocordillera just west of the Lago Sofia deep-sea channel system.

Facies Analysis of the Early Mesozoic Hajo Formation in the Chungnam Basin, Boryeong, Korea (보령지역 충남 분지 중생대 초기 하조층의 퇴적상 분석)

  • Facies analysis of the Late Triassic Hajo Formation, the lowest stratigraphic unit in the Chungnam Basin, shows that the lower part is composed mainly of breccias or conglomerates; the middle part, conglomerates; and the upper part, conglomerates and sandstones. The formation consists of 13 facies, which include horizontally stratified clastsupported conglomerate, clast-supported massive breccia, matrix-supported massive breccia or conglomerate, matrixsupported graded conglomerate, massive pebbly sandstone, horizontally laminated sandstone, massive sandstone, graded sandstone, inversely graded sandstone, planar cross-bedded sandstone, trough cross-bedded sandstone, low angle crossbedded sandstone, and massive mudstone. These are grouped into 4 facies associations (FA). FA I consisted of clastsupported and matrix-supported massive breccias presumably deposited in the talus or upper fan delta environment. FA II consists of matrix-supported massive conglomerate and horizontally stratified clast-supported conglomerate of cobble size and it seems to have been deposited in the upper fan delta environment. FAIII consisted of matrix-supported massive conglomerate of pebble size, horizontally laminated sandstone and massive sandstone may have been deposited in the middle fan delta environment. FAIV consists of massive pebbly sandstone, horizontally laminated sandstone and massive sandstone and presumably was deposited in the lower fan delta environment. In general the Hajo Formation is interpreted to have been deposited at the talus/upper fan delta environment in early stage; it might have been deposited in the alternating environments of upper and middle fan delta in middle stage; and it seems to have been deposited in alternating environments of middle and lower fan delta in late stage.

DEM estimation of mechanical properties of conglomeratic rocks (역암의 역학적 거동 특성 파악을 위한 개별요소법의 응용)

  • 역들의 공간적 분포가 불균질하고 역의 크기가 큰 역암의 경우 암석 전체를 대표하는 물성치($E_m,\;c,\;\Phi$ 등) 구하기 위해서는 매우 큰 시험기기가 필요하다. 따라서 커다란 역을 포함하는 역암의 경우 직접 암석실내시험을 통한 물성치 산정은 현실적으로 거의 불가능하다. 이러한 문제를 극복하기 위하여 이 연구에서는 개별요소법을 이용하여 역암의 물성치를 산출하는 방법을 제안한다. 그 방법은다음과 같다. (1) 역암내의 역의 물성과 기질부의 물성을 각각 실내실험을 통하여 파악한 후 이들 (2) 두 물질의 거동양상을 구현할 수 있는 개별요소집합체의 개별요소간의 물성을 결정한다. (3) 역의 함량, 크기 모양 공간적 분포양상등의 역암 조직과 유사한 개별요소 수치해석시료를 만든 후, (4) 이를 수치 해석실험 (이축압축실험)에 사용한다. 이러한 수치해석실험을 통해 현재까지 만들어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 역의 강도가 기질의 강도보다 높은 역암의 경우, 역의 양이 증가할수록 일축압축강도, 내부 마찰각, 점착력이 증가하지만 증가 양상은 선형이 아니다. 탄성계수의 경우 역의 양과 상관 없이 변화하지 않는다. 둘째, 역과 기질 사이 표면의 점착력이 약할 경우 이러한 표면에서 최초 미세 균열이 형성되기 시작하므로 이 점착력은 물성치를 산출하는 중요한 인자이다. 따라서, 향후 이에 대한 자세한 연구가 필요하다고 판단된다. 결론적으로,설계 또는 시공시 직접시험에 의한 물성치의 파악이 어려운 역암 또는 직접시험을 위해 대량의 시료를 필요로 하는 함력 미고결지층, 핵석층, 풍화암과 같은 시료의 물성치는 별도로 측정된 물성들 (예, 역과 기질)을 이용한 개별요소법을 통해 구할 수 있다.로 나타났다.TEX>, DIN/DIP비 표층수 $23.91\pm3.42$, 저층수 $23.43\pm3.38$이었으며, 전반적으로 해역별 수질기준 I등급 내지는 II등급을 유지하고 있었고, 공간적으로는 외해측으로 갈수록 외해수와 혼합 확산되어 양호한 수질을 나타내었다. 장기적인 변동특성은 세그룹으로 구분되어진다.기 실험결과 용출용매로 증류수와 해수를 이용했을 때, 제강 슬래그에서 용출되는 납, 구리, 카드뮴, 수은의 용출 경향의 차이를 확인할 수 있었고 이에 따라서, 납, 구리, 카드뮴의 용출 유해성은 낮기 때문에 해양구조물로의 제강슬래그 유효이용은 적합할 것으로 판단되었다.im80%$로 계산되었다. 열형광선량계로 측정된 방사선량은 각각 1.8, 1.2, 0.8, 1.2, 0.8 (70 cm 거리) cGy로 측정되었으며, 환자의 복부 표면에서의 서베이메터를 이용한 측정량은 10.9 mR/h였다. 차폐구조물의 사용 시 전체 치료 동안에 태아선량은 약 1 cGy 정도로 평가되었다. 결론 : AAPM Report No.50의 자료에 따르면, 임산부의 방사선 치료 시 태아의 방사선 피폭선량은 5 cGy 이하일 경우에 방사선 피폭에 따른 태아의 위험이 거의 없는 것으로 제시되고 있다. 본원에서 차폐 구조물을 설치하였을 경우에 측정된 태아선량은 약 1 cGy로 측정되었고, 고안된 차폐구조물은 태아에 도달하는 방사선량을 감소시키기에 적합한 설계임이 입증되었다. 아니라 일반종합병원에서도 CTX-M형 ESBL 생성 E. coli와 K. pneumoniae가 존재하며 확산 중임을 시사한다. 앞으로 CTX-M형 ESBL의 만연과 변종 CTX-M형 ESBL의 출연을 감시하기 위한

Mineral Chemistry and Geochemistry of the Bentonites Intercalated within the Basal Conglomerates of the Tertiary Sediments in Korea and Their Stratigraphical Implication (제3기층 기저역암에 협재되는 벤토나이트의 광물학, 지화학적 연구 및 층서적 적용)

  • Bentonite layers are intercalated within the basal conglomerates in the Tertiary sedimentary basins of Kampo, Janggi and Pohang, southeastern Korea. Eighteen samples of the bentonites went through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, heavy mineral analyses, chemical analyses and oxygen, hydrogen stable isotope analyses to define the mineralogical characters of the bentonites. Heavy minerals such as zircons, apatites, amphiboles and biotites separated from bentonites show clean and euhedral surfaces, which are the characteristic features of volcanic origin. But biotites from the Chunbook Conglomerate are found as altered and heavily broken flakes which implies longer transportation of these bentonites. $TiO_{2}/Al_{2}O_{3} ratios of <2 $\mu$m particle fractions (the Chunbook Conglomerate 0.031; Janggi 0.029; Kampo 0.025) suggest that those are originated from volcanic tuffs. That is, the higher the value is, the more mafic in chemical compositions of the original tuffs. Authigenic montmorillonite and zeolite minerals were observed by SEM, which indicates diagenesis origin of bentonites. But the samples from the Chunbook Conglomerate showed only chaotically packed clay flakes in the matrix of sands or conglomerates, which implies detrital influence, not authigenic origin. The structural formulae of montmorillonite from these basins reflects their environment of formation. Fe (Ⅵ) can show the redox condition of its past environment and much lower $Fe^{2+}(Ⅵ)/Fe^{3+}(Ⅵ)$ ratios in montmorillonite of the Chunbook Conglomerate imply the greater oxidizing influence. Calculated burial depths from oxygen stable isotope data of the samples from the Chunbook Conglomerate generally fall to the range of 929~963 m whereas the real burial depth of this area is only 530~580 m. This could be explained as the bentonites of the Chunbook conglomerate had not been formed in situ. Discriminant analyses with the data from chemical analyses and structural formulae of montmorillonites show that bentonites from three different basins could definitely be distinguished with each other. This result arises from the different chemical compositions of original volcanic ashes and the difference of sedimentary environments.

  • 이암층 역암층 그리고 화산암층과 같은 특수지질 불량구간에서 터널과 암반사면의 합리적인 시공을 달성하기 위해서는 먼저 대상지질에 대한 지질조건과 암반특성을 정확히 이해하는 것이 필요하며, 이를 바탕으로 지반특성에 적합한 보강대책을 수립하도록 하여야 한다. 본 고에서는 포항지역과 경주지역에서의 미고결 이암 및 역암층 그리고 제주도 화산암층에서의 암반 구조물에 대한 설계 및 시공사례를 검토하고 전형적인 미고결 지층으로 알려진 신생대 지층에서의 터널과 암반과 같은 암반구조물에 대한 설계 및 시공상의 제반 문제점을 고찰하므로서 이에 대한 합리적인 대책을 수립하고자 하였다.

SHRIMP U-Pb Zircon Ages of the Jinju Formation and Silla Conglomerate, Gyeongsang Basin (경상분지 진주층 및 신라역암의 SHRIMP U-Pb 저어콘 연령분포 및 그 의미)

  • To constrain the depositional ages of the Gyeongsang sedimeantary formations, SHRIMP U-Pb ages were determined from detrital zircons in three samples: (1) a pebble-bearing sandstone from the lowermost Jinju Formation of the Sindong Group and (2) two conglomerates from the Silla Conglomerate of the Hayang Group. Their concordia ages are $112.4{\pm}1.3(2{\sigma})$ Ma and $110.4{\pm}2.0(2{\sigma})$ Ma respectively. Such ages represent the maximum deposition ages for the lowermost Jinju Formation and Silla Conglomerate, indicating the deposition of the Jinju Formation started from late Aptian and lasted to early Albian, then deposition of the rather thin Chilgok Formation and Silla Conglomerate was followed during the Albian. The age distribution of the analyzed detrital zircons indicates the presence of protoliths, or zircons derived from them, regarding a wide span of igneous activities from Mesozoic to Archean. Among such ages, there are Mesoproterozoic, Neoproterozoic and Paleozoic igneous activities, which have not been known or seldom reported from Korean peninsula. These ages further suggest the possible presence of rocks with such ages during the deposition periods or their derivation through a long river system developed into the continents at the time of deposition.

  • The soil mechanical characteristics according to geologic conditions were investigated in the study area. The geology of study area was consisted of Ingok Tuff, Yuchi Conglomerate and Dado Tuff. Yuchi Tuff covered about 80% of the study area. The disturbed and undisturbed soils were sampled from the conglomerate area, Tuff area and Shale area, and then a series of the laboratory soil tests was performed. The soils sampled from the conglomerate area have a large dry unit weight and a low permeability relatively, while the soils sampled from tuff and shale areas have a small dry unit weight and a high permeability. It is proven that the soil permeability is highly affected by the effective grain size and the silt and clay content. That is, the soil permeability is increased with increasing the effective grain size, and the soil permeability is decreased with increasing the silt and clay content.

$^{40}Ar^{/39}Ar$ Age of the Volcanic Pebbles Within the Silla Conglomerate and the Deposition Timing of the Hayang Group (백악기 신라역암 내 화산암력의 $^{40}Ar^{/39}Ar$ 연대 및 하양층군의 퇴적시기에 대한 고찰)

  • Hornblende $^{40}Ar/^{39}Ar$ age of $113.4{\pm}2.4(2{\sigma})$ Ma was determined from the volcanic pebble of the Silla Conglomerate which belongs to the Hayang Group of the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Supergroup. This age corresponds to the top of Aptian. Based on the reported age information, onset and duration of deposition of the constituting formations of the Hayang Group are constrained as follows; deposition of the Jindong Formation started from ca. 96~97 Ma and lasted for about 15 Ma. Therefore, Jindong Formation was deposited since Cenomanian to Santonian and it is likely to be extended to the early Campanian. We propose 81~80 Ma, which is in early Campanian, as the boundary between Hayang and Yucheon Groups. We suggest that the Silla Conglomerate was deposited during the early Albian and the Haman Formation was deposited during the rest of the Albian and also during the Cenomanian. The Chilgok Formation seems to be deposited during the late Aptian.
