Archaeological Interpretation for Wolseong Fortress in Gyeongju using GPR (GPR을 이용한 경주 월성 지하유구의 고고학적 해석)

  • The name of (Ban)wolseong thanks to its having a shape like a half-moon. Wolseong fortress is one of 'Gyeongju Historic Area', world heritage. The Silla kingdom's royal palace previously maintained its capital fortress at the locale of Wolseong. However its real face has been kept in mystery. This study grafts Geophysics on modern Archaeology and approaches with scientific and systematic methods to an excavation plan or archaeological study by means of GPR exploration which can complement archaeological curiosity without destroying Wolseong fortress. The exploration area is $12,000m^2$ in front of Seokbinggo(stone storage for ice). It is only $10\%$ area of Wolseong fortress. As a conclusion, GPR detected 7 of squared buildings($8{\times}8m^2$ size), stone wall, an entrance for the fortress, lots of foundation stones, road(presumptive), and a presumptive pond which size is 35${\~}$40m in diameter.

Topic Model Analysis of Research Themes and Trends in the Journal of Economic and Environmental Geology (기계학습 기반 토픽모델링을 이용한 학술지 "자원환경지질"의 연구주제 분류 및 연구동향 분석)

  • Since the mid-twentieth century, geology has gradually evolved as an interdisciplinary context in South Korea. The journal of Economic and Environmental Geology (EEG) has a long history of over 52 years and published interdisciplinary articles based on geology. In this study, we performed a literature review using topic modeling based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), an unsupervised machine learning model, to identify geological topics, historical trends (classic topics and emerging topics), and association by analyzing titles, keywords, and abstracts of 2,571 publications in EEG during 1968-2020. The results showed that 8 topics ('petrology and geochemistry', 'hydrology and hydrogeology', 'economic geology', 'volcanology', 'soil contaminant and remediation', 'general and structural geology', 'geophysics and geophysical exploration', and 'clay mineral') were identified in the EEG. Before 1994, classic topics ('economic geology', 'volcanology', and 'general and structure geology') were dominant research trends. After 1994, emerging topics ('hydrology and hydrogeology', 'soil contaminant and remediation', 'clay mineral') have arisen, and its portion has gradually increased. The result of association analysis showed that EEG tends to be more comprehensive based on 'economic geology'. Our results provide understanding of how geological research topics branch out and merge with other fields using a useful literature review tool for geological research in South Korea.

A Study on the Analysis of User's Satisfaction at the Commercial Street of Historic and Cultural Environmental Districts in Gyeongju (경주시 역사문화환경지구 내 상업가로경관에 영향을 미치는 요인 분석)

  • This study aims to examine residents' satisfaction and behavioral condition at the commercial street of Historic and Cultural Environmental Districts in Gyeongju. To achieve this, the study relied on empirical study method and additionally, present condition survey was performed with a user interview. residents' satisfaction and preferences analysis was conducted to figure out present conditions and improvements. This work has completed a total analysis of the architectural characteristics and street factors among various factors which influence residents' satisfaction level including physical street equipments and street view factors which are main contents of previous studies and street improvement project. Using statistical analysis, each factor's significance was verified quantitatively. Accordingly, this study presents prior consideration points before planning the commercial street improvement project and the region development project.

  • 10세기부터 18세기까지 한국 역사서에 기록된 38개 흑점과 이와 연관된 것으로 보이는 25개의 적색 오로라를 조사하여 고대 흑점의 지구 영향성을 분석하였다. 고대 관측 시기를 1300년을 기준으로 이전의 온난기와 이후의 냉한기로 나누어 보면, 흑점의 관측 빈도는 두 기간에서 비슷하지만, 오로라는 냉한기에 집중적으로 관측된다. 특이하게도, 크기가 큰 흑점의 경우는 냉한기보다 온난기에서 관측 빈도가 세 배 이상 높다. 또한, 흑점과 관련된 오로라의 강도를 분석해보면 크기가 큰 흑점은 작은 흑점보다 2~3배 이상 지구영향성이 높다는 것을 알 수 있다. 우리는 1185년에 관측된 흑점이 수개월에 걸쳐 여러 차례 관측되었다는 것을 확인하였으며, 그 활동성 면에서 2003년 할로윈 이벤트와 유사했을 것으로 유추하였다. 향후 현대의 흑점 관측 스케치와 국제 흑점수의 관계를 정량화할 수 있다면, 유일하게 한국 역사서에만 찾아볼 수 있는 흑점의 크기 단위는 흑점수와 같이 태양활동의 지표로 사용될 수 있을 것으로 보인다.

Analysis on the Relationship between Intensity and Magnitude for Historical Earthquakes in the Korean Peninsula (한반도의 역사지진 평가를 위한 진도-규모 관계 분석)

  • Equations that could estimate the local magnitude of historical earthquakes, being difficult to calculate, in Sino-Korea craton was obtained using instrumental earthquake data for 22 Korean and 46 northeastern Chinese events. The obtained equations from intensity $I_0$ is $M_L=1.7+0.57{\times}I_0$. The equation from felt area FA for the Korean Peninsula is $M_L=4.29-1.34{\times}log(FA)+0.28{\times}log^2(FA)$. When the information on earthquake damage, effects, and felt area is all recorded at the same time, the former equation of intensity is more feasible than that of felt area due to uncertainty in earthquake felt area.

A Study on Conservation and Practical Use of Incheon Old Town Urban Tissue (인천 구도심 도시조직의 보전 및 활용에 관한 연구: 지구단위계획의 내용과 실효를 중심으로)

  • This study reviewed details and case studies of district unit planning to preserve and develop urban tissues concerning a historic urban environment and provide implications for future practice. In particular, this case study examined the role of the district unit planning in city conservation rooted in the experience of Incheon's old town. The old town begins with the opening of Incheon Port and concessions, including Japanese, Qing Dynasty, and multinational settlements. Second, the study established land subdivision planning and reviewed the institutions to encourage urban tissue. Third, the conservation guidelines influenced the conservation and utilization of the streets, such as alleys and old coastlines, the form of parcels called deep and narrow lots, and the exterior elements of buildings. This study also derived implications for the future. First, the street with historical value in the settlement should be excavated further. Second, the parcels in the settlement limit redevelopment to maintain the unique morphological characteristics. Third, the exterior of the buildings should be provided with planning incentives to induce conservation and utilization.
