  • In the world history in the rein of totalitarianism cultural project of government had been activated, and consequently of it official culture had been organized. But at the same time on the other side of it people('narod'), who didn't have cultural means for active expression of own opinion on the reality, had expressed world-view and judgement informally in everyday language. In the literature of autocracy, subjected to censorship, had been expressed and fixed mythically idealized image of sovereign and his works. But in the folklore the image of ruler had been created by liberal fantasy of people. This article examined russian literature and folklore texts of 18 century, when russian people suffered from rapid and dramatic changes, caused by Peter I. Although russian literature of 18 century had gone over to the new literary regime, it still accepted political mechanism as dominant of age, and consequently in the literary texts of this century Peter I was represented as ideal person and great monarch. But various images in folklore texts show that people's opinion on ruler and his activities couldn't be controlled. In other worlds, diverse images of Peter I in folklore texts reflect clear and plain historical consciousness of people. This analysis reveals not only difference between mechanism of idealization of government and historical consciousness of people, but also meaning of cultural memory as indicator of historical reality.

  • This paper surveyed records and archives which the railroad stations in Busan possesses and illustrated the status of them. Also we examined whether records and archives of railroad stations contain the memories of localities or not. We visited 17 railroad stations in Busan and we found that 1) the archives in railroad station are fugitive archives 2) the records or archives are classified into five categories, 'station's history', 'report on station-adjacent area', 'report of drive and transport', 'photos', and 'other materials' 3) the volume of such archives in 17 stations are different because of disposal or missing 4) Each archives in same category have same form. Especially the descriptions and images in 'station's history', 'report on station-adjacent area' represent much to memories of locality, but we also must examine the public records, private records related railroad station in Busan for documenting localities. To bridge the gap we suggest to collect oral records by relevant persons.

  • The function of history is divided into two: justification and reflection. Justification confers causality on the consequences of history, and thereby putting emphasis on the inevitability of present. From the perspective of reflection, on the other hand, history is what is selected from several possibilities, and in this respect, present is not necessarily inevitable. The former is conservative; the latter, reformative. History, however, takes both of the functions. History reproduces a community by preserving memories of the community through a record, and leads to the evolution of a community through reflection. Emerged in the precess of industrialization, Korean design, despite its relatively short history, is witnessing a growing desire to prove its existence through history. While, it is also noteworthy that there is an increasing interest in looking at the history of Korean design from the perspective of reflection. I propose four propositions necessary to study of the history of Korean design. They are as follow; 1) History is interpretation; 2) The history of the institution should be overcome; 3) A simplifying progressive view of history should be restrained; 4) Foundation for study should be established.

  • Recently, industrial heritages have been transformed into cultural facilities in the wake of urban Regeneration. This focus is mainly on appearance, and the explanation is often abbreviated as a master narrative, and the placeness is not sufficiently inherited. The placeness of industrial heritage contains not only historical but also personal memories. Place memory must be collected and managed in order for the placeness that can be the source of identity to be preserved and utilized. To this end, this study suggested collecting place memories based on personal life histories. Using the case of collecting Andong Station and Cheongju Tobacco Factory, the life narrative was broken down into an event and the process of reinterpreting it as a place memory was proposed to implement archiving of industrial heritage sites. This methodology means that it can be supplemented rather than replaced.

  • The origin of texts we refer to as literary or artistic may be imagination, but many are based on experiences. In fact, experiences can be the source of artistic imagination since imagination often builds upon experiences. Therefore, the act of verbalizing human experiences using them as raw material can become a great form of art. Transforming past experiences into stories and infusing them with vitality inevitably requires a creative process of reconstruction, which is essentially a literary process. As such, 'Personal Narrative' holds significance as a literary process that weaves facts into stories and shapes them into forms. Individual experiences are stored as personal memories, and these 'personal memories' continuously generate stories. Collections of individual stories are stored as multiple memories, which gradually form 'collective memories' with distinct social and cultural inclinations through the passage of time and invisible yet potent societal and cultural censorship. The problem lies in the fact that individuals may tend to align their own memories with the inclinations of collective memory rather than simply recalling what they personally experienced. In the context of actual history, personal memories and collective memories communicate with each other, producing non-fictional content close to reality and sometimes manifesting as fiction content enriched with imagination. 'Personal Narrative' holds a significant genre as one genre of non-fiction content within our culture.

  • The culture of memory in France regarding slavery and slave trade has slowly been expanding its horizons: from limited perspective focusing on abrogation of slavery to inclusion of discussion on real experiences and suffering of African slaves. This change has been particularly noticeable since the 150th anniversary of abrogation of slavery in France in 1998. It was the year that citizens of French overseas territories that had internalized this painful and shameful history of suffering formed a visible social movement. For the last two decades, the French government has also demonstrated consistent, proactive and prompt response to discussions of issues rooted in slavery in overseas territories, wherein slavery is the root of fundamental problems. In particular, when the Taubira Law (2001) was passed in the Senate, the Committee for the Memory of Slavery was established. This committee has since contributed to better assessment and understanding of French history of slavery and slave trade. Such was the profound as well as significant change in public perception as well as in legal and social aspects that culminated in the 2015 establishment of $M{\acute{e}}morial$ ACTe, Caribbean Centre of Expression and Memory of Slavery and the Slave Trade in Guadeloupe. Reflecting on those historic moments in recent French history, this paper examines major debates in French society regarding establishment of the $M{\acute{e}}morial$ ACTe. It assesses how Aleida Assmann's "cultural memory" was created with the establishment of $M{\acute{e}}morial$ ACTe and how it has contributed to the new cultural identity of French overseas territories.

  • China is a country with a long history. Chinese culture dates back thousands of years ago. Thousand years of history left the huge quantity of archival heritage, which consists of the memory of China. From tied knots, tortoise shell, bronze, bamboo to paper, film, CD, the mankind's history is kept and continued through the evolution of the documenting media and documenting methods. In the information era, when we are immersed in the sea of information technologies, archivists, as guards of human's memory, have to look for a balance point between new and old, between unchanged and changed. On one hand, archivists should try their best to protect traditional archives in a usable, authentic way in a long term; on the other hand, they must face the challenges posed by electronic record. The information age is a stage of the social development of mankind, the digitalization of archives is an important progress of human history. The report mainly is composed of three parts of the content: first, introduce the preserving situation of Chinese archival heritage ; focus are put on "China archival heritage program" and the construction of "Special archives repository"; second, the process of digitalization of traditional archives; third, the framework of electronic record standard.

  • This study aims to raise our understanding of how memory of a social group is transnationally appropriated and utilized by other subjects. A collective sense of justice for comfort women has been handed to many Koreans either in Korea or in overseas countries since the early 1990s. In the U.S., the first comfort women monument was established in Palisades Park, New Jersey by Korean-Americans and local politicians as they wanted to strengthen the common sense of Korean ethnicity with the symbolic power of the memoryscape. Exploring the diffusion of comfort women memorials in the U.S., this study examines the complexity and multilayered structure of memory politics and its transnational mobility, which are connected to Korean-Americans' struggle for belonging.
