  • This paper investigates the possibility that children in school limit their mothers' labor supply. The theoretical background for the possibility is that mothers may choose to stay home if their time and monetary inputs on children's quality investment are poor substitutes for each other. The empirical findings suggest that labor supply of highly educated women and those with high household income is relatively suppressed by their children in school.

  • Women engineering education programs in the United States, Europe and Australia were analyzed. From 1970s, these countries focused on the low representation of women in engineering, and carried out extensive research and programs. Numerous studies identified the causes of low representation as low interests in mathematics and science during K-12 years, classroom environments which treat women differently (often referred as chilly climate), and the masculine culture in engineering. Comprehensive approaches were taken in the development of the programs: the programs utilized the schools and universities as well as various local institutes, and the programs were designed not only for female students from elementary to graduate levels, but also for parents, teachers, professors, and school administrators. In order to adopt these programs in Korea, the problems that Korean female engineering students are facing in the education environment must be investigated first. Then, unified efforts to change the educational system, environments and culture are needed by all in engineering fields, along with nation-wide policies and funding.

  • Using the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study 2001 (KLIPS 2001), this paper examines gender differences in the return to education in Korea. On average, there is little difference in return to education between male and female workers. However, this paper provides evidence that the impact of education on wages is greater for female workers compared to that for male workers using three different estimation strategies. First, a simple cohort analysis shows that the estimated returns to education for male and female workers have different patterns by age cohort and this is the main reason we observe little gap in average returns to education between men and women. Second, we find that college degree has a significant impact on women's labor market outcomes, while there is little gain for men in terms of wage levels by having college degree. Finally, when controlling unobservable individual ability level with test scores, education has no significant impact on male workers' wage levels, while the impact of education on wages is considerably large for female workers. All three findings support that the impact of education on labor market outcomes is greater for female workers compared to that for male workers as many researchers have found in other OECD countries.

  • The purpose of this study is to systematically develop an impression management education program for career women by applying the Educational System Development Model [ESD] (Kwon, 1997) based on the research results of Hwang and Lee(2019) on social attractiveness. Since the previous impression management education programs were generally developed by content experts, few of them were developed systematically by considering the learner characteristics, clearly setting the educational goals, and structuring the contents accordingly. In this study, 'social attractiveness' defined by Hwang and Lee (2019) was considered as the educational goal of the impression management education program. In particular, this study focused on the design stage of the ESD model, set teaching goals based on the components of social attractiveness derived from previous studies, and conducted an analysis of teaching activities, the establishment of the educational goals at the specific function level, allocation of time, and establishment of an evaluation plan. The research process was intended to improve the learners' social image directly related to success through a systematic educational program designed to enhance the social attractiveness of working women with various hands-on activities and information. The impression management education program designed in this study has the educational advantage of a learner-centered education program configured to meet the needs and goals of career women. In addition, based on the ESD model, the sub-factors necessary for impression management were identified, and the curriculum was configured to reflect them through mutual communication between the instructor and learners. Therefore, this education program meets the basic requirements of impression management education necessary for career women and is expected to contribute to enhancing the social attractiveness of working women.

  • In South Korea nowadays, Among the married immigrant women in Korea, the proportion of long-term residents living in Korea for more than 10 years is increasing continuously(48%), while the proportion of short-term residents who are under 5 years is decreasing(16%). However, Korean language education and related research in the Marriage and Immigration Women's Center are still focused on the initial immigrants. Therefore, we should classify married immigrant women according to their stay time in Korea, so that Korean language education and teaching materials need to be more diversified. This study focuses on married immigrant women with intermediate and advanced Korean proficiency and chooses a catalogue of Chinese characters idioms to explore the possibility and educational value of using Chinese characters Idioms in Korean education. This is the important part of Korean language education that needs to be guided by married immigrant women. Based on this, 130 Chinese characters idioms in Korean language education and textbook development centered on married immigrant women were selected and catalogue edited in four stages. It is hoped that the results of this study will serve as a reference for Korean language education research and textbook development for married immigrant women in the future.
