In the present study a feasibility of a novel filtration process using synthetic for secondary effluent reclamation was investigated. Polyurethane was chosen as a filter medium among tested three media. Compressibility and up-flow velocity were changed to determine the optimum operation for the system. An equation was introduced to express the relationship between the removal efficiency and up-flow velocity. In pilot study, the synthetic medium filtration with compression showed very stable effluent quality without clogging trouble, though the system operated with 3 times higher filtration rate and much longer backwashing interval than conventional systems.

Secondary effluent contains particle compounds which are comprised of microorganisms that occurs membrane fouling when the water is reused. This study evaluates the characteristics of membrane fouling of secondary effluent reuse. Effects of chemical backwashing are analyzed to reduce membrane fouling by regular chemical backwashing. As the result, major membrane foulants are verified EPS materials which include protein and polysaccharide that cause biofilm cake layer on the membrane. Also, sodium hypochlorite is applied to chemical backwashing. The backwashing improves recover rate when injected chemical concentration is increased and chemical backwashing cycle is amplified. Chemical backwashing cycle affects more than injected chemical concentration yet idle time does not noticeably influence on reducing membrane fouling.
This study applied microbubbles to reduce membrane fouling in wastewater reuse membrane processes, evaluated and compared the transmembrane pressure with or without the application of microbubbles and the cleaning efficiency with the application of aeration and microbubbles. In addition, this study analyzed foulants removed from the membrane surface. Changes in the transmembrane pressure of membranes with the presence or absence of microbubbles were observed. As a result, transmembrane pressure (TMP) increasing rate decreased twofold when applying microbubbles to realize stable operations. This study compared and evaluated cleaning efficiency applying aeration and microbubbles. As a result, the cleaning efficiency was 5% higher on average when applying microbubbles. In turbidity and total organic carbon (TOC), foulants were discharged when applying microbubbles twice as much as applying aeration. It is thought that particulate foulants precipitated on the membrane surface were more likely to desorb because the adhesion between the membrane surface and particle was weakened by microbubbles. Therefore, it is considered possible to effectively control membrane fouling because of the increase in cleaning efficiency when applying microbubbles to wastewater reuse membrane processes.
This study was performed to increase the removal efficiency of the biofilter packed with granular sulfur in municipal wastewater reclamation facility. Constituent units were influent water tank, denitrification tank, BOD reduction tank and outlet. And, the major operation factor is a biofilter packed with submerged granular sulfur. Actual wastewater and synthetic wastewater were used as influent wastewater. Experimental condition was divided into two phases according to the amount of a phosphorus coagulant. Total phosphorus removal efficiency was insignificant at mode I that phosphorus coagulant was not injected. The average influent and effluent total phosphorus concentrations at mode II were 0.5 ~ 1.0 mg/L and 0.27 mg/L, respectively. As for COD and BOD effluent concentrations, COD was 3.0 mg/L and BOD was 1.0 mg/L. Additionally, nitrogen removal rates were high at low influent DO concentration. In conclusion, a new process, biofilter packed with granular sulfur is expected to treat high-rate nitrogen wastewater and expected to be utilized as an alternative of technological innovation for the nitrogen treatment.
Domestic water treatment plants operate the rapid and slow filtering system using the filtering sands. Most of them are composed of beach sands, which have less sorption capacity of heavy metals as well as organic contaminants. Therefore, the development of fortified functional filtering materials with high removal capacity of organic and inorganic contaminants is needed to prevent the unexpected load of contaminated source water. This study aims to test the hydrochemical change and the removing capacity of heavy metals such as Cd, Cu, and Pb on the Jumunjin sand, feldspathic sand(weathering product of Jecheon granite), feldspathic mixing sand I(feldspathic sand mixed with 10 wt% zeolite), and feldspathic mixing sand II (feldspathic sand mixed with 20 wt% zeolite). Feldspathic mixing sand I and II showed the eruption of higher amounts of cations and anions compared with the Jumunjin sand and feldspathic sand. They also showed higher eruption of Si, Ca, $SO_4$ ions than that of Al, $NO_3$, Fe, K, Mg, and P. Feldspathic mixing sand II caused higher eruption of some cations of Na, Ca, Al than feldspathic mixing sud I, which is the result controlled by the dissolution of zeolite. Jumunjin sand and feldspathic sand showed very weak sorption of Cd, Cu and Pb. In contrast to this, feldspathic mixing sand I and II showed the high sorption and removal capacity of the increasing order of Cd, Cu and Pb. Feldspathic mixing sand II including 20% zeolite showed a fortified removal capacity of some heavy metals. Therefore, feldspathic mixing sand mixed with some contents of zeolite could be used as the fortified filtering materials for the water filtering and purification in the domestic water treatment plants.

Radon gas, which is present on the earth, is a primary carcinogen released from rocks, soil, building materials, etc., and exists as a unique gas phase. In order to solve the risk of radon gas, we evaluated the basic performance which can be used as indoor finishing materials in addition to the radon gas reduction properties of the matrix using anthracite. An anthracite used as a conventional filter material was used to produce a matrix, and a test was conducted to replace the gypsum board, which is one of the building materials used in the existing room. As the anthracite replacement ratio increases, flexural failure load strength increases and thermal conductivity tends to decrease. Depending on the thickness of the board, the reduction performance of radon gas shows a slight difference.

In this study, the characteristics of electrostatic bag filter to overcome the main problems such as the high pressure drop and low collection efficiency for submicron particles are investigated with the experimental parameters. Especially, the experiment is carried out focusing on collection efficiency and pressure drop change mechanism as a function of discharge electrode shapes and filter properties, including the applied voltages, filtration velocities and particle concentrations, etc . Results show that the collection efficiency is improved over 30% for the fine particle below 1 pm and pressure drop reduction ratio (PDRR) increases in the following order 4 mm screwy > 4 mm square > 4mm round discharge electrodes . For the filter properties, Nomex is more effective than PE under the influence of electrostatic force. Applying 30 kV for a screwy discharge electrode, higher overall collection efficiency is maintained in spite of the increment of filtration velocity over four times (8 m/min) in comparison with that of 2 m/min and PDRR are highly shown over 80o1o with various filtration velocities, 5, 8, 11 m/min.
A novel bacterium, designated strain RR4-38 (= KCTC 52651 = DSM 108068), belonging to the family Flavobacteriaceae was isolated from a biofilter in the seawater recirculating aquaculture system in South Korea. A single complete genome contig which is 3,182,272 bp with 41.9% G+C content was generated using PacBio RS II platform. The genome includes 2,829 protein-coding genes, 6 rRNA genes, 38 tRNA genes, 4 non-coding RNA genes, and 9 pseudogenes. The results will provide insights for understanding microbial activity in the seawater recirculating aquaculture system.

This study was aimed at investigating effluent water quality and proposing reuse possibilities for 12 sewage treatment plants discharged more than $5,000m^3/day$ in order to recycle the sewage treatment plant effluent of Jeollabuk-do effectively. Additionally, a laboratory scale test for reprocessing water discharge was performed. Categories of reclaimed sewage water reuse were divided into 7 topics and analyzed a total of 28 items including 16 heavy metals based on water quality standard. As a results, color, BOD, TN, chloride and Electrical Conductivity (EC) exceeded reused water quality standard. In particular, color and TN exceeded in 8 and 5 sewage treatment plants, respectively. The value of chloride and EC were high in sewage treatment plants including the food and industrial wastewater. At 4 sewage treatment plants were possible to reuse without re-treatment. The laboratory scale test was conducted to SandFilter (SF)-Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)-MicroFiltraion (MF)-Reverse Osmosis (RO). Both the removal efficiencies and economic feasibility of total E. coli., color and Suspended Solid (SS) suited in case using the SF-GAC treatment method. The removal of chloride and EC had little effect in the case of SF-GAC-MF system, but RO showed over 90% of removal efficiency. After using SF-GAC process only, the concentration of $UV_{254}$ decreased sharply from 0.3651 /cm to 0.0306 /cm and it showed over 92% of removal efficiency rate. In conclusion, for the effective reuse of sewage discharged water, water quality and the surrounding terrain of treatment plants should be all taken into account. If it needed for the reprocessing, both the selection for treatment and economic combination treatment methods will have to be considered.
