Thermodynamic Correlations for Predicting the Properties of Coal-Tar Fractions and Process Analysys (석탄 유분에 대한 물성예측식 개발 및 공정에 대한 연구)

  • Full-scale utilizations of batch separation process often require knowledge about thermodynamics and correlation techniques of physical properties of complex mixture consisting of a great number of many unknown components. Various empirical correlations have been proposed to predict the physical properties mostly about the pseudocomponent of petroleum. In this study, one parameter correlations are developed for the calculations of the critical physical properties and ideal heat capacity of the pseudo-component of coal tar fractions. Developed model can provide a tool for the design and operations for the batch distillation of coal tar mixture.

Degree of Retrogradation of Non-Waxy and Waxy Rice Cakes during Storage determined by DSC and Enzymatic Methods (DSC와 효소법을 이용한 멥쌀 밑 찹쌀떡의 노화도에 관한 연구)

  • Retrogradation of non-waxy rice (NWR) and waxy rice (WR) cakes (45% moisture) stored at 5$^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$ and -2$0^{\circ}C$ was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and enzymatic ($\beta$-amylase-puuulanase) method. With DSC, endotherms did not appear with rice cakes stored at room ($25^{\circ}C$) and deep freezing (-2$0^{\circ}C$) temperatures but did with samples stored at low temperature (5$^{\circ}C$), showing accelerated retrogradation by low temperature. Onset temperature (To) and peak temperature (Tp) did not change under 14 days at 5$^{\circ}C$ but enthalpy values ($\Delta$H) increased rapidly within one day and increased steadily until 5th day of storage, then equilibrated. Higher $\Delta$H were obtained with WR cakes than NWR cakes. It was suggested that more amylopectin recrystallization occured with WR than NWR. Degrees of gelatinization of rice cakes determined by enzymatic method increased in the following order: 5$^{\circ}C$ < $25^{\circ}C$ < -2$0^{\circ}C$. In contrast with DSC results, dogrees of gelatinization of NWR cakes, were relatively lower than that of WR cakes. However, increased retrogradation extents (melting enthalpies) caused reduced enzyme susceptibilities to $\beta$-amylase-pullulanase system, among NWR or WR cakes stored at 5$^{\circ}C$. The degrees of retrogradation of rice cakes stored at 5$^{\circ}C$ were higher than those stored at $25^{\circ}C$ and -2$0^{\circ}C$ without regard to the kind of rice. The higher sensitivity of the enzymatic method was obtained than that of DSC method when the degrees of retrogradation of rice cakes were determined during storage under this experiment conditions.

Thermodynamic Parameters of Complexation of Lanthanides by L-proline (Lanthanides-L-proline 착물의 형성에 관한 열역학적 연구)

  • The stability constants for lanthanides complexes with optically active L-proline (1 : 1) were determined in aqueous solution in the ionic medium of 0.1 M $NaClO_4$ at 25$^{\circ}C$ using a pH titration method. The results show called "gadolinium break" between lighter and heavier lanthanides. The linear relation between the stability constant (log$\beta$1) and the pKa values of ligands indicates that L-proline acts as a bidentate ligand in the complexation. The thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}H$ and ${\Delta}S$) were also determined using an enthalpy titration method at the same condition. The positive endothermic enthalpy change and positive entropy change clearly indicate that the driving force for the complexation is an entropy effect. The comparison of the thermodynamic parameters of L-proline complexes with anthranilate complexes supports the conclusion that the heterocyclic nitrogen atom and carboxylate of L-proline are involved in the chleate formation. The enthalpy values for L-proline are more positive than the ones for anthranilate complex. The difference in enthalpy change for the complex formation between L-proline complex and anthranilate complex is explained in terms of the basicity of the nitrogen donor atom in the ligand. The relatively large entropy change may be described by the extra dehydration related to the rigidity of L-proline ring.

  • Welding is essential in ship production since welding is very popular method for joining two or more metals. However, welding causes residual stress and distortion and these give a bad influence to the structure strength and assembly of ship blocks. Therefore, prediction and treatment of residual stress and distortion is a key to accuracy control in shipyard. In this paper, a computational procedure, based on thermal-elastic-plastic 3-dimensional FEA, has been suggested to simulate butt and fillet welding process. In the simulation process, temperature distribution at each time step is obtained by heat transfer analysis and then thermal deformation analysis is done with obtained temperature distributions to find the residual stress and distortion. In heat transfer analysis, enthalpy method is used to realize phase change at melting temperature. Also element birth and death method is used to simulate adding of weld metal in both heat transfer analysis and thermal elastic plastic analysis. The proposed procedure is verified by related researches and the results show good agreement with those of related researches.

Absorption Characteristics and Prediction Model of Ginger Powder by Different Drying Methods (건조방법에 따른 생강분말의 흡습특성과 예측모델에 관한 연구)

  • Absorption characteristics of hot air-. vacuum-, and freeze-dried ginger powder were investigated. Monolayer moisture content as determined by GAB equation was $0.257{\sim}0.540\;H_2O/g$, showing higher significance than BET equation. Absorption enthalpy was calculated based on different drying methods and water activities. Absorption energy decreased with increasing water activity but was not affected by drying method. Isotherm curves showed a typical sigmoid form. Among models applied for predicting equilibrium moisture content, Caurie model was the best fit model for ginger powder, showing the lowest prediction deviation of $1.2{\sim}5.4%$, followed by Henderson then Bradley models. The prediction model equations for the moisture content were established by in(time), water activity, and temperature.

  • In numerical analysis numerical values of thermodynamic properties such as temperature, pressure, specific volume, enthalpy and entropy are required. But most of the thermodynamic properties of the steam table are determined by experiment. Therefore they are supposed to have measurement errors. In order to make noised thermodynamic properties corresponding to errors, random numbers are generated, adjusted to appropriate magnitudes and added to original thermodynamic properties. the neural networks and quadratic spline interpolation method are introduced for function approximation of these modified thermodynamic properties in the saturated water based on pressure. It was proved that the neural networks give smaller percentage error compared with quadratic spline interpolation. From this fact it was confirmed that the neural networks trace the original values of thermodynamic properties better than the quadratic interpolation method.

  • The effect of the surface activation treatment on the crystallization of the amorphous silicon film was investigated. The amorphous silicon film was deposited on the silica substrate with LPCVD technique. Wet blasting with silica slurry or exposure with Nd:YAG laser beam was applied on the amorphous silicon film before annealing for the crystallization. For the analysis of the crystallinity, XRD, Raman, and SEM were employed. In this investigation, the prior surface activation treatment like silica wet blasting or Nd:YAG laser beam exposure before annealing for the crystallization were found to be effective in the enhancement of the crystallization. It is believed that these treatment lower the activation energy required for the crystallization of the amorphous silicon film.

Numerical Analysis of Melting Process in a Water Tank for Fuel-cell Vehicles (연료전지 자동차의 물탱크 해빙과정에 대한 수치해석적 연구)

  • Good cold start characteristics are essential for satisfactory operation of fuel cell vehicles. In this study, the melting process has been numerically investigated for a water tank used in fuel cell vehicles. The 2-D model of the tank containing ice and plate heaters was assumed and the unsteady melting process of the ice was calculated. The enthalpy method was used for the description of the melting process, and a FVM code was used to solve the problem. The feasibility study compared with other experiment showed that the developed program was able to describe the melting process well. From the numerical analysis carried out for different wall temperatures of the pate heaters, some important design factors could be found such as local overheating and pressurization in the tank.

  • One of the cold start problems of a FCV is the freezing of the water in the water tank when a FCV is not in operation and the surrounding temperature drops below $0^{\circ}C$. The ice in the tank should be melted as quickly as possible for a satisfactory operation of fuel cell vehicles. In this study, the melting process for the constant heat fluxes of the plate heaters was numerically calculated in the 2-D model of the tank and plate heaters. The enthalpy method and FVM code was used for this analysis. The changes of the temperature with heat fluxes and the heat transfer area could be investigated. The energy balance error was found to increase with the heat flux. From this numerical analysis, the proper heat flux value and some important design factors relating local overheating and pressurization of the water tank could be examined.

  • A liquid rocket engine(LRE) Using LO$_2$/LNG(Liquefied Natural Gas) propellants was experimentally evaluated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of the LO$_2$/LNG rocket combustor that is composed of three sect ions(igniter spacer, cylinder and nozzle section), especially focused on the influence of regenerative cool ing effect in association with the phase of regenerative coolant Series of tests were conducted under the conditions of water cool ing and regenerative cool ing with LNG in the cylinder section and independent cool ing with water in the igniter spacer and nozzle sections. Parametric studies on the variation of a chamber pressure and mixture ratio were undertaken. In addition, effect of propellant(LNG) composition and its enthalpy on the performance is examined.
