Inlet distortion test was performed at Korea Aerospace Research Institute in order to evaluate the degradation of engine performance under the distorted inlet condition. In this paper, only the inlet pressure distortion was taken into consideration. During the development process of the inlet distortion test technique, variable distortion screen was designed and evaluated under various test conditions to establish the experimental database of distortion for engine test. The result of inlet distortion test for engine shows that the operating point was changed toward the worse direction and the degradation of engine performance by inlet distortion was verified.

The Preparation for a flight test of the launch vehicle to verify the performance of the liquid rocket engine(LRE) is proceeding. Flight test of liquid rocket engine costs an enormous amount of money, has a restriction on measurement channels, so it requires the optimal measurement plan to check the prelaunch operation and determine the cause of abnormal situation. This paper surveys the foreign sources for LRE flight test. In recent years, as the tendency to eliminate all faults of LRE at the ground test the number of flight test is decreasing and in contrast, the number of measurements and measurement accuracy is increasing. This paper may be used as a reference for the preparation of an LRE flight test.

Combustion test facility for liquid rocket engine using kerosene and liquid oxygen has been developed for the purpose of cooling and performance study. Test engine of thrust under 1.0 KN can be evaluated, and the real combustion test ensures a good operation of the combustion test facility. Combustion test facility will be modified to supply natural gas and liquefied natural gas as fuel and to give a regenerative cooling test.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. constructed a gas turbine engine test cell to verify operating characteristics and design parameters of 5MW class gas turbine engine for power generation under developing. Engine test cell was designed to satisfy critical requirements to scrutinize all performance parameters of the engine with safe and reliability in accordance with design specification. As the test cell developed can effectively reproduce engine operation conditions covering from start-up to maximum power condition, it can be utilized to make a continuing design improvement of the engine based on practical test data at full stretch. Moreover, it is expected to be serviceable to develop derivative engines and be utilized to put them into serial production and contribute to a competitiveness reenforcement as a gas turbine engine manufacturer.

A test stand for an altitude test of reciprocating engine was designed, manufactured and validated by preliminary tests and simple calculations. The test stand was designed to interface with the altitude turbo-shaft engine test facility of Korea Aerospace Research Institute. Many limiting conditions for altitude test of reciprocating engine were assumed and the test stand was developed to satisfy these limitations. The test stand design was focused especially on the altitude, Mach number and fuel temperature control for reciprocating engine altitude tests with smaller air and fuel flow than those of turbo shaft engines.

This paper describes the current development status of the major subsystems, turbopump and gas generator, for a turbopump-fed liquid oxygen-kerosene rocket engine system. As a secondary stage of the liquid rocket engine development test, turbopump-gas generator powerpack tests are planned. The schematics of the test hardware and the test facility for the TP+GG coupled test are presented. The results of a preliminary analysis for operating regimes of the TP+GG coupled test are also presented.

Stability rating of KSR-III rocket engine is conducted based on stability rating tests in the course of development of KSR-III rocket engine. Rocket engine is approved to have combustion stabilization ability when it can suppress the external perturbation or pressure oscillation with finite amplitude and recover the original stable combustion. Rocket engine in flight nay be perturbed with unexpectedly large amplitude and thus a designer should not only assure combustion stabilization ability of the engine but also quantify the stabilization capacity. For this, several quantitative parameters and their evaluation are introduced. To verify dynamic stability of KSR-III rocket engine, five stability rating tests have been conducted. Based on these test results, such parameters are quantified and thereby, the stabilization capacity of KSR-III rocket engine is evaluated.

A Mach 5 nozzle and a diffuser of the Scramjet Engine Test Facility (SETF) were made for a hydrocarbon-fueled scramjet engine. SETF, attached with a diffuser guide, started with a model of 60% blockage, though the model engine could not start by over expansion of the facility nozzle. The model was moved into the nozzle to escape the shock generated from the nozzle exit, both SETF and the engine could start. The pitot rake experiments (blockage of 2.3%) were done for measuring the core flow in the test section. From the pitot experiments, the core flow was expanded by an under expansion. It means that the core flow in the test section was related with a model blockage. SETF and the engine with a blockage of 33% work normally. From a series of experiments, SETF started with a normal shock efficiency of 58%, regardless of a blockage ratio.

The deign and lay-out of a combustion chamber test facility(CTF), a turbopump real propellant test facility(TPTF), a rocket engine test facility for 3rd stage engine(SReTF), a rocket engine ground/high altitude test facility(ReTF, HAReTF) and a propulsion system test complex(PSTC) for KSLV-II is briefly described. The development/qualification tests of engine component, 3rd stage engine system and 75ton-class liquid rocket engine system will be performed in CTF, TPTF, SReTF, ReTF and HAReTF and the development test of 1st/2nd/3rd propulsion systems for KSLV-II will be performed in PSTC. These propulsion test facilities will be built in NARO space center considering construction schedule, cost, safety distance and utility factor of propulsion test facilities.

In this study, the engine performance data was extracted and analyzed through the flight test of Smart UAV which is tilt rotor aircraft. The flight test was conducted for the transition flight regime where the tilt angle of prop-rotor varies from 90 degree to 0 degree and vice versa. The engine performance data such as engine power and specific fuel consumption gathered from flight tests were compared well with the results of engine performance analysis program.
