  • Military wargame simulation models must support the HLA in order to facilitate interoperability with other simulations, and using parallel simulation engines offer efficiency in reducing system overhead generated by propelling interoperability. However, legacy military simulation model engines process events using sequential event-driven method. This is due to problems generated by parallel processing such as synchronous reference to global data domains. Additionally. using legacy simulation platforms result in insufficient utilization of multiple CPUs even if a multiple CPU system is under use. Therefore, in this paper, we propose conversing the simulation engine to an object model-based parallel simulation engine to ensure military wargame model's improved system processing capability, synchronous reference to global data domains, external simulation time processing, and the sequence of parallel-processed events during a crash recovery. The converted parallel simulation engine is designed and implemented to enable parallel execution on a multiple CPU system (SMP).

  • Simulation visualization technology is an important constituent through which users directly interact with simulators. Simulator users have a needs for more fast, realistic and intuitive visualization. Though hardware-related performances such as computing power and visual equipment have been grown, the limits have existed in graphics rendering engines generally used in marine simulator up to now. This paper has focused on the review of graphic rendering engines available for simulation visualization. We had deduced system requirements for visualization of ship handling simulation, had surveyed graphic rendering engines as commercial and open source, and analyzed strengths and weakness of them. The feasibility study for simulation visualization of tug-barge transportation with an open source graphics rendering engine(OGRE3D) has been demonstrated.

  • An integrated simulation engine provides tools, services, and standards to support various activities in the entire M&S from modeling and simulation to analysis of the simulation results. Many countries have developed integrated simulation engines to efficiently assist complex M&S activities. However, we do not have domestic simulation engines especially designed for defense M&S, therefore, developing M&S softwares still remains as a hard task with high cost and tine. OpenSIM(Open Simulation engine for Interoperable Models) is an integrated simulation engine and provides tools, services and standard interfaces for weapons analysis. OpenSIM's services are comprised of classes, member functions and data attributes which are commonly used in modeling, simulating and analyzing weapons systems. In this paper, we introduce OpenSIM's services in C++ APIs and illustrate them through an ASM example(Air to Surface Missile).

  • This paper introduces the development of a toolbox for the Space Shuttle Main Engine(SSME) based on MATLAB/Simulink. A mathematical model of rocket engine creation and validation can be a complex process, the development of a rocket engine toolbox simplifies this process, thereby facilitating engine performance optimization as well as new design development. The mathematical modeling of the SSME dealt with in this paper is formed by 32 first-order differential equations derived from seven governing equations. We develop the toolbox for the SSME classifying each module according to the engine components. Further, we confirm the validity of the toolbox by comparing the results of the simulation obtained using the toolbox with those obtained using the original simulation of the engine.

  • Modeling and Simulation techniques are useful to construct executable battlefields and forces on computers, and have been utilized to analyze effectiveness of weapon systems in the computerized war environment. However, most weapon simulations so far have exhibited low reusability and extensibility, since they have been developed for specific simulation objectives with different structures and simulation engines. In this paper, we identify requirements for defense modeling and simulation activities and propose a simulation engine to support the identified requirements. We define the software architecture of the proposed engine, in a way to efficiently provide usability, component-based reusability, interoperability, and reuse-based development.

  • This study conducted a simulation to observe the performance of a multi-turbocharged gasoline internal combustion engine for a high-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (HALE UAV). The WAVE 1-D engine simulation software from Ricardo was used for the engine system modeling and simulation. The specifications of a 2.4-L four cylinder gasoline engine from commercial vehicles and maps of commercial vehicle turbochargers were applied to the multi-stage turbocharged engine system model. Three turbochargers and intercoolers were installed in series for the appropriate intake of pressure for the gasoline engine at a high altitude of 60,000 ft. There was one wastegate for the turbochargers. The operability of the engine system was analyzed via this simulation model.

  • Development of an engine with good fuel economy is very important for successful implementation of long endurance miniature UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles). In the study, a 4-stroke glow-plug engine was modified to a gasoline-fueled spark-ignition engine. Engine tests measuring performance and friction losses were conducted to tune a simulation program for performance prediction. It has been found that excessive friction losses are caused by insufficient lubrication at high speeds. The simulation program predicts that engine power and fuel economy get worse with high altitude due to increasing portion of friction losses. The simulation results suggest quantitative guidelines for further development of a practical engine.
