A Study on Energy Storage System(ESS) Application for Dynamic Stability Improvement and Generation Constraint Reduction (대규모 발전단지 상시제약 감소를 위한 에너지 저장장치(ESS) 적용에 관한 연구)

  • Prepare a lose of 765kV transmission route in power system operation condition, there are some Special Protection Scheme(SPS)s in Korean power system. These SPS can make some preselected generators are tripped to avoid generator overspeed. Because of many of the new large power plants are installed to existing power generation sites due to the siting problem, the number of generator tripped by SPS should be increased. But that can be a cause of system frequency change under the Under Frequency Relay(UFR) 1st pickup level 59.0Hz. Therefore generation constraint should be considered until new transmission lines are installed. In this paper, we propose the ESS application for generation constraint mitigation by frequency damping control of ESS. To analysis an effect of ESS application, we use PSS/E dynamic simulation tool, CBEST model and controller model. The proposed ESS application is applied to the empirical Korean power system.

  • 최근 차세대 휴대용 전자기기나 전기자동차의 상용화 연구가 활발히 이루어짐에 따라 리튬이온 배터리가 주력 에너지 저장장치로써 활발히 개발되고 있다. 이러한 리튬이온 배터리의 음극 물질로써 주로 탄소재료가 많이 사용되어 왔지만 낮은 이론용량 (372 mAh/g)으로 인하여 좀더 높은 용량을 가지는 금속이나 합금 등이 주목을 받게 되었다. 그 중에서도 주석이 탄소재료에 비해 3배 정도 높은 이론 용량 (993 mAh/g)을 가지고 있어 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 하지만 주석의 경우 리튬이온 배터리의 충방전 과정 중에 급격한 부피 변화가 발생하여 음극이 손상되고 이에 따라 용량이 급격하게 감소하는 한계점이 있다. 이 한계를 극복하기 위한 많은 방법들 중 하나가 구리-주석 합금을 음극으로 사용하는 것이다. 구리는 비활성 금속으로 충방전 중의 부피 변화에 완충제 역할을 하고, 연성과 전기전도성이 있어서 배터리의 전기화학적 성능 또한 향상시켜 준다. 이에 따라, 본 연구에서는 주석이 풍부한 구리-주석 합금 도금을 통하여 구조적으로 튼튼한 리튬이온 배터리의 음극을 만들었고 그 성능을 확인하기 위하여 반쪽전지 실험을 통하여 500회 충방전 동안의 싸이클 특성 및 효율을 확인하였고 순환전압전류 실험 또한 진행하였다.

  • When using a secondary battery in energy storage units, if the grid is in light duty the active power is stored so it can be used when the grid is in heavy duty. This makes possible for the load equalize and make the grid optimized. Recently the government is trying to propagate this technology. Depending on its capacity this kind of electric energy storage unit is used in adjusting the frequency, break up the energy peak in summer and winter, stabilize the energy output of renewable energy which can change unstably because of the environment. Which makes it possible to stabilize the grid. It is anticipated that market of 120 trillion won will be developed worldwide in 2030. Currently in Korea a steady supply is in progress. However because of stray electromagnetic waves some other electronics are malfunctioning. This paper covers the research in the method to detect the emission noise in small electric energy storage units using lithium secondary batteries and battery management system, Power conditioning systems with CIPSR standards. And the research of a more efficient method to measure such stray electromagnetic waves.

Grid-tied Power Conditioning System for Battery Energy Storage Composed of 2-stage DC-DC converter (2단 DC-DC 컨버터로 구성된 배터리 에너지저장용 계통연계형 전력변환장치)

  • This paper proposes a new grid-tied power conditioning system for battery energy storage, which is composed of a 2-stage DC-DC converter and a PWM inverter. The 2-stage DC-DC converter is composed of an LLC resonant converter connected in cascade with a 2-quadrant hybrid-switching chopper. The LLC resonant converter operates in constant duty ratio, while the 2-quadrant hybrid-switching chopper operates in variable duty ratio for voltage regulation. The operation of proposed system was verified through theoretical analysis and computer simulations. Based on computer simulations, a hardware prototype was built and tested to confirm the technical feasibility of proposed system. The proposed system could have relatively higher efficiency and smaller size than the existing system.

  • Power exchanges between the grid and the battery through a bidirectional DC-DC converter are essential for DC microgrid systems. In general, the battery is charged when the grid is connected, and the system is powered by the battery when the grid is disconnected. In this mode transition, the saturation of the voltage controller slows down output response and produces large transient errors in DC link voltage. To solve this problem, a novel anti-windup design is proposed to improve anti-windup performance further. The proposed method stabilizes DC bus voltage through a wider range of battery voltage with faster transition compared with that of conventional methods. The proposed method is verified through an experimental setup composed of a 125 W laboratory-scale DC microgrid system.

  • A series-hybrid power system was designed for quad-tilt prop UAV and the characteristics was analysed. The power system consists of a 4.5kW rotary engine-generator and a li-battery as power sources, a power controller manages the overall power and supplies to the vehicle system. The output power of the engine is to be matched with the generator performance considering mechanical driving loss and generating efficiency, and also loss for charging and discharging of the battery energy. It is applied that the constant speed operation of the engine-generator to minimize overall fuel consumption by integrating the generating power and the battery energy, consequentially the battery capacity and characteristics could be important factors for improvement of the system efficiency.

  • In recent years, renewable energy sources have been mentioned as solution to environmental regulation and energy supply-demand. Energy storage systems are needed to mitigate the intermittent output characteristics of renewable energy sources and to operate micro grid efficiently using renewable energy generation systems. However, despite the necessity of energy storage system, this cannot secure the economical efficiency of the energy storage system by high initial cost. In this paper, a micro grid is constructed to supply electric power to industrial customers by using solar power generation system and energy storage system among renewable energy generation power sources and operated to improve energy independence. In the case study, we use photovoltaic system which is representative renewable energy generation system. Unlike conventional photovoltaic system, this system uses floating photovoltaic system with the advantage of having high output and no land area limitations. It is operated for the purpose of improving energy independence in the micro grid. In order to secure economical efficiency, the energy storage system operates a micro grid with a minimum capacity. Finally, this paper calculates the appropriate subsidy for the energy storage capacity.

  • Secondary batteries become more important in our lives as the use of portable electric devices, such as camera, cellular phone, laptop, etc. Especially, because of their high energy densities and high voltage, lithium-ion batteries are being used in many systems. For the optimum design of such systems which include lithium-ion batteries, virtual prototype is required generally. However, since the complex chemical and physical processes are involved, the behavior of battery becomes harder to be predicted compared with that of electric and mechanic devices. This paper, proposes a new static model of lithium secondary battery, which accounts for nonlinear equilibrium potentials, rate and temperature dependencies, thermal effects, lifetime characteristic. The results of the simulation of the model are analysed and compared with experimental data to inspect their validity.

  • 본 논문은 에너지 저장시스템(ESS)과 무정전 전원장치(UPS)를 하나로 통합한 새로운 하이브리드 ESS-UPS 시스템을 제안한다. 제안하는 시스템은 ESS와 UPS를 하나로 통합함으로써 전력변환 시스템(PCS)의 가격을 줄이고 배터리의 이용률을 높일 수 있다. 또한 기존의 on-line UPS와는 달리 두 종류의 중요부하를 구성할 수 있어 PCS의 용량대비 비상발전 용량을 증대시키는 것이 가능하다. 본 논문에서는 제안하는 하이브리드 ESS-UPS 시스템의 운영 전략 및 급속 모드전환 알고리즘을 제안하며, 5kW급 축소 시작품을 통한 실험 결과로 타당성을 입증하였다.

  • In this research, we consider a smart grid network of electricity with multiple consumers connected to a monopolistic provider. Each consumer can be informed the real time price changes through the smart meter and updates his consumption schedule to minimize the energy consumption expenditures by which the required power demand should be satisfied under the given real time pricing scheme. This real-time decision making problem has been recently studied through game-theoretic approach. The present paper contributes to the existing literature by incorporating storage appliance into the set of available household appliances which has somewhat distinctive functions compared to other types of appliances and would be regarded to play a significant role in energy consumption scheduling for the future smart grid. We propose a game-theoretic algorithm which could draw the optimal energy consumption scheduling for each household appliances including storage. Results on simulation data showed that the storage contributed to increase the efficiency of energy consumption pattern in the viewpoint of not only individual consumer but also whole system.
