  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how portal users recognize the role and function of the portal as a press. Furthermore, this study aims to analyze the pattern of portal news use among portal users and their recognition about replies to news. For this, we conducted online survey of 1,036 people aged from 15 to 45, who used portal site at least once a week. As a result, most users(70.8%) agreed that portal news played a role as a press with other media. In addition, six out of ten agreed that portal news set the agenda of society. These results suggest that portal users think highly of the social impact and responsibility of portal in society. However, about 40 percent of respondents said that they did not trust in information shown in replies to news and many replies to news were written by albeit. Six out of ten thought that replies to news were written by intention. Therefore, to manage the quality of replies to news is necessary to secure the credibility of portal news. As respondents use portal news often, they tend to think that portals are convenient to use and their social impact is very large, at the same time considering their sensation and commercialization. On the other hand, as portal users use the internet often, they tend to think that portals are convenient to use and their social impact is immense. However, there was no significant relationship between income and portal users' recognition of portals as the press.

  • This research looks into the narrative aspect of news in order to disclose problems with intercultural communication in our society. News on racial issues and "Hanryu" would illustrate cultural bias against others. This study attempts to analyze narrative structures of news on these issues using narrative theories including Greimas and Levi-Strauss. It covers news on major newspapers such as Chosun, Jung Ang, Dong A, Hanguerae and Economy Daily as well as major broadcasting news including KBS, SBS and MBC. There were 495 news on 'Hanryu' and racial issues with regard to Hines Ward from January 1, 2006 to April 15, 2006. By analysing narrative structures of these news, I found power underneath news messages which undermine the reality. Expansionism and cultural insensibility prevent our society from understanding other cultures as they are. Post-colonial theories provide a guideline for detecting intercultural barriers and national identity crisis in our society.

Further, through a depth interview, this study tried to understand local journalists' thoughts on using the news releases published by local government. This study hypothesized a negative relationship between the newspaper scale and the degree of the use of news release, between the scale and the dependent rate on the news releases, and proposed a positive relationship between the scale and the writing styles(neutral, negative, neutral, positive). The research results supported the first two hypotheses, and the third partially. Thus, the greater the newspaper scale, the higher the degree of the use of news release by local newspaper. And the greater the scale, the higher the dependent rate on the news releases. In addition, the smaller newspaper in the scale showed more positive and negative writing styles than the larger did. On the other hand, the larger newspaper tend to have more neutral writing style than the smaller did. The interviewee also indicated, in terms of newspaper scale, there was diverse perspectives on the use of news release.

  • This paper intends to draw implications for preparing for Post-Corona in the health field and policy fields as the global pandemic is experienced due to COVID-19. The purpose of this study is to analyze the news and trends of media companies through temporal analysis of the three infectious diseases, SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), in which the domestic infectious disease preventive system was active throughout the first year of the outbreak. To this end, by using the news analysis program of the Korea Press Foundation 'Big Kinds', the number of news articles per year was digitized based on the period when each infectious disease had an impact on Korea, and major trends were implemented and analyzed in a word cloud. As a result of the analysis, the number of articles related to infectious diseases peaked when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a warning and (suspicious) confirmed cases occurred. According to keyword and word cloud analysis, 'infectious disease outbreak and major epidemic areas', 'prevention authorities', and 'disease information and confirmed patient information' were found to be the main common features, and differences were derived from the three infectious diseases. In addition, the current status of the infodemic was identified by performing word cloud analysis on information in uncertainty. The results of this study are significant in that they were able to derive the roles of the health authorities and the media that should be preceded in the event of a new disease epidemic through previously experienced infectious diseases, and areas to be rearranged.
